Mark Steyn is one of today’s great writers. His comment on the Wilders situation deserves its own post:

The PC nellies of the Canadian “Human Rights” Commission, happy to hound the last neo-Nazi in Saskatchewan posting to the Internet from his mum’s basement, won’t go anywhere near Abou Hammaad Sulaiman Dameus al-Hayitia, the big-time Montreal imam whose book says infidels are “evil people”, Jews “spread corruption and chaos”, and homosexuals should be “exterminated”.

Instead, the state’s response to explicit Islamic intimidation is to punish those foolish enough to point out that intimidation. You don’t have to be as intemperate as Minheer Wilders can sometimes be: In the Netherlands even the most innocuous statement can get you into trouble. To express his disgust at Theo van Gogh’s murder, the artist Chris Ripke put up a mural outside his studio showing an angel and the words “Thou shalt not kill”. But the cops thought this was somehow a dig at the local mosque and so came round, destroyed the mural, arrested the TV news crew filming it, and wiped their tape. The Dutch have determined to commit societal euthanasia, and dislike fellows pointing out it might not be as painless as they’ve assumed.

Democracies tend to die of suicide, lets hope that’s not the case.

Used up a gift card and pickup up a batch of Big Finish Dr. Who’s from Mike’s comics.

By picking up some used or scratch and dent cases managed to get 3 8th doctor cd’s a pair of Davidson’s including the newest featuring the Key 2 Time series and the BBV Rani adventure that they had on sale.

I’ll be giving these a listen for the next day or so I’ll put up some reviews.

Odd enough the release date of Judgement of Isshar is Jan 31st. Mike’s must get them early.

The Chief’s Justices flub of the oath was an embarrassment that he will be teased for, but it seems some constitutional scholars don’t want to take any chances.

Several constitutional lawyers said President Obama should, just to be safe, retake the oath of office that was flubbed by Chief Justice John Roberts.

The scholars suggest that it can be done privately and believe it might have already done so, meanwhile Jed Babbin has some fun with it:

If this were ancient Rome, Barack Obama would be huddled in a temple wondering what went wrong and the Roman Senate would be trying to choose a new Caesar. The crowning of the liberal Sun King ran behind schedule, and that was the best omen for Obama on the day of his inauguration.

It can’t help hurt to re-do it but we are going to have to put up with a lot of nonsense over it till then.

Update: should have said can’t hurt, and apparently it didn’t.

Apparently Barack Obama must read the blogs, or listen to constitutional lawyers on television. The new President took some free advice and re-took the oath of office today, just to be on the safe side:

Well at least with the extra practice Roberts will be ready for 2012.

You want real censorship, here you go:

A Dutch court has ordered prosecutors to put a right-wing politician on trial for making anti-Islamic statements.

Of course this pales before the vast censorship during the Bush years of left wing voices right?

Reaction: Gates of Vienna

Notice that the court claims the right to grant “normal leeway” to politicians. That is, they are the law. The political leaders, who are elected by the people and are charged with passing laws, do so only on the sufferance of judges, who make the ultimate decisions about what is and isn’t permitted.

Gateway pundit:

The end of free speech in Europe

Jihad Watch:

If they succeed in doing this, we will be rendered mute, and thus defenseless, in the face of the advancing jihad and attempt to impose Sharia on the West — in fact, one of the key elements of the laws for dhimmis is that they are never critical of Islam, Muhammad, or the Qur’an, so this initiative not only aids the advance of Sharia in the West, but is itself an element of that advance.

Did you notice that picture? Either Wilders is REALLY tall or Spencer is really short.

You know as time goes by the wisdom of the Bill of Rights and the people who insisted on it before ratifying the Constitution did a service to us for all time.

Update: Little Green Footballs doesn’t care for either the prosecution or Wilders:

Wilders, however, has called for the Koran to be outlawed. In other words, Wilders wants to ban books with which he doesn’t agree. If there’s one thing we should have learned from history, it’s that book-banning never turns out well—and it’s anathema to the American ideals of free speech and free choice of religion.

This prosecution is disgusting and wrong, but it’s difficult to cast Wilders as an icon of free speech when he explicitly advocates taking away the rights of others.

I like Hot air, it is a stop I make every day on the net, so let me them some advice:

When you have a headline that says “A near majority” that a sure way to advertise that you don’t have a majority. That type of word game seems a tad weaselly to me.

Just say “a plurality” next time. I can’t stand word games. It is what people do when you want to hide a reality.

Here is the poll.

At Big Hollywood (which will have a link by the end of the week as its been great reading) Andy Levy has an important list of don’t for us on the right now that we are out of power totally:

DON’T question the motives – question the policy. When you disagree with Obama’s policies, say so, and make it clear why. But remember that President Obama is doing what he thinks is best for the country, as President Bush did. Both men love America and want what’s best for her. End of story.

DON’T make it personal. We don’t need another Derangement Syndrome. We don’t need people doing things like emphasizing Obama’s middle name in a derogatory fashion. How anyone would think that’s beneficial to their cause, or to the country as a whole, is beyond me. Also, it’s not even clever. Neither are smushwords like BusHitler, or sillywords like Rethuglicans and Dhimmicrats.

DON’T pretend you’re being brave when you criticize your government. Not while people in other countries actually, y’know, DIE, when they do that.

I would add one thing. If people on our side decide to mimic the derangement that we’ve seen on the left we need to call them on it.

Via Israellycool our reading today is from the 1st letter of David to the Gazans:

…We ask only for one thing. Leave us in peace. That’s right. We have no other demands. Just leave us in peace. It’s as simple as that. If you don’t, we will fight back ferociously and mercilessly. We will destroy your homes and your cities. We will make your miserable lives even more miserable. If you don’t want this to happen any more, leave us in peace.

Our soldiers are not motivated by hate but by determination. We embrace life and will do anything to preserve it. However, we will kill and die to protect our land and our way of life. That’s what they should be teaching in your schools instead of useless lies.

A terrorist is a terrorist. Sorry to be the one to break the news, but it’s about time somebody told you that a terrorist is nothing more than a coward. Not a hero. Not a Shahid. There is nothing heroic in blowing yourself up amongst a crowd of woman and children. Anybody can do it. Anybody can hide inside a school or a mosque and blindly fire rockets into cities, hoping to kill as many babies as possible. There is nothing courageous or admirable in these acts of cruelty. To take pride in an act of terror is pitiful and pathetic. I know you’ve been raised to believe the contrary, but it is a lie. I have seen how your children are taught to commit suicide. How your suicide bombers are glorified. This is tragically sad. A real hero faces his enemy and doesn’t hide in schools and hospitals. A real hero protects his people and will die for them but not among them.

Israel exists and it belongs to the Jewish People. I’ve seen your school books. I know that Israel has been omitted from your maps. Contrary to what you’ve been told, the State of Israel really does exist. Look outside your window. We are here and we are not going anywhere. Dear Palestinian neighbor, it’s time to deal with the facts. We love our beautiful little country. We will protect it with our lives. You are not getting it. This was explained to you in 1948. You got your country and we got ours. Your arrogant and stupid leaders promised you that you will get the whole thing. Thousands have lives have been lost for nothing. It’s NEVER going to happen! While you have been foolishly drooling over our land instead of nurturing your own, we have built one of the most beautiful and successful countries on Earth. We have done it not to spite our greedy neighbors, but rather in spite of them. We’ve planted forests and quenched the desert. We’ve drained wetlands and culivated fields. We built universities, opera houses, superhighways, hospitals, skyscrapers and stadiums. We have millions of refugees, but no refugee camps.

You could do the same. Focus on what you have and not on what you will never have. It takes love, hard work and determination. We can help. We have experts and scientists helping developing nations across the globe. Accept the facts, lay down your weapons and join us in making this great region of the planet even greater

It’s pretty good advice, will the Gazans take it?

To make up for all the days lost to the Ice Storm last month Fitchburg will be eliminating February vacation and the Good Friday from the days off this year.

My son will not be amused but then again he will not be going to school in July either.

Not sure if Catholic Schools will follow suit on Feb vacation but they sure won’t on Good Friday.

My wife who works in Leominster will be sleeping in that week with a large smile on her face.
