At about 3:20 p.m. today my oldest son sat down to each an early supper since he had to work tonight at 5. He then told me something he had seen on the Life Dr. Who and Combom site concerning the Royal Mint coming out with Dr. who coins.
I checked out the Royal mint site and sure enough they have medals of base medal coins of the <a href=”http://www.royalmint.com/store/Medals/DRWDTBU.aspx”>10th doctor, K9 and the Daleks for £9.95 each (about $16.41 each. I also noticed that they had Silver medals of the Doctor and the Daleks at £35 ( 57.75 each) and a full Gold medal of the Doctor and the Daleks at £150 each ($247.50)
The Silver medals are limited to 5000 each and the Gold to 500. causing me to regret not having large sums of disposable income because they will turn over VERY quickly.
I gave a call to the mint and the lady there told me that they were absolutely swamped. They hadn’t even gotten the medals in the the computer system yet so all the orders were on paper. I picked up 2 each of the base metal ones and one each of the silver. Can’t afford the gold which is a shame because I don’t think they will last past tomorrow if even.
Like the 1st year issue quarter sovereigns if I was working I would have picked up a few to sit on but I can’t justify the expense without work and don’t want to teach my kids speculation when money is tight.
If you want some for yourselves I wouldn’t wait for the day to end.
The woman above is Rose Mary Woods. She was President Nixon’s secretary who claims to have “accidentally” erased the 18 1/2 minute gap in the Watergate tapes. Lets pretend it is 1973 and All the Watergate tapes were erased and only “reconstructions” created by the Nixon White House were available. Would you have taken the Nixon White House’s word that the tapes were “accidentally” erased? Did you take Rose Mary Woods word? Is that credible?
It’s a cheap ego boost but it might drive hits so i’ll take it.
What I have to say is indirect commentary, much less important than the actual act but very telling…
In the first hour or so of Morning Joe today Mika was simply giddy with the idea that Mike Huckabee said on camera that he will likely not run since he doesn’t have the support of the base, she snidely talked about him not passing the “purity test” of the GOP and stressed it as an insult.
At this point Joe and Willie brought up events in Seattle and the fact that the killerwas released by Mike Huckabee’s and will become his Willie Horton Moment.
You should have seen Mika’s face, it twisted and changed as if someone had run over her puppy. However later in the show the subject of “purity tests” came up again without the Huckabee connection and she was herself again.
Although the blindsiding of Mika, famous for wanting to deal with “hard news” was funny the real story was the fact that Joe and Willie knew all about what was going on in Seattle and it wasn’t making the news, the Houston Chronicle headline was shown but no further discussion.
Was it due to the race of the subject? Was it because it was concerning a released felon? I think it is because it has no bearing on their media template or ability to hit conservatives in general. It can only hurt Huck and they perfer Huck after all he is very beatable, even by Obama.
This is really about the News selection, the people at ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN et/al they KNOW about these stories, (Charlie Gibson not withstanding) and they choose to pretend otherwise or are ordered by their bosses to do so.
They are some of the best of the media’s coffee clatch crowd but are still part of that crowd and want to stay there. There is only so far off the reservation you can go and still be welcome at the parties and get the attention for the shows. That is the tightrope that they choose to walk. Re-admittance to that crowd was Andrew Sullivan’s reward for his change, would he be a regular on Chris Matthews’ show without it?
That’s why SarahPalin drives them all nuts, she believes what she believes and you can take it or leave it , same with Rush he believes what he believes and doesn’t care what others think about it. They refuse to let others define them. It is a threat to the entire world view of the media culture.
I think their Radio show is going to be interesting, what will they choose to cover?
Note as I’m finishing this post there is 30 min to go in the show and they have hinted they will touch the topic again. Lets see…
In a new Washington Post poll, Palin beats other GOP leaders on two questions: who best represents the party’s core values, and who Republicans would vote for if the presidential nomination battle were held today. But she has particular appeal to the loyal followers of Limbaugh and Beck, two of the most popular conservative talk show hosts in the country.
Do our beliefs form the basis of our partisan and ideological affiliations? Or is it vice versa?
There’s been a lot of recent evidence not only that Republicans disproportionately disbelieve the evidence for man-made global warming but that their skepticism is growing. I think that trend is fairly classed under the general heading of Republican/conservative hostility to science. But the other point interests me no less.
I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume that Mr. Marshall didn’t spend his thanksgiving in a cave somewhere either in a cave or somewhere neither of those phonenetwork maps have coverage and did in fact hear that there issomenew “globalwarmingnews” outthere.
That is ironic because it is the left — not the right — that is ignoring the growing body of evidence that discredits the theory of anthropogenic global warming. Climategate revealed that data supporting this theory is corrupted by the political agenda and quest for government grants by proponents of anthropogenic global warming at Penn State and at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England.
Today I’m am over an 1:15 into Morning Joe and no mention, the media is doing it’s best to totally ignore this story in keeping with its nichemarketmodel. I presume that Marshall has decided to do the same. He should take a lesson from Paul Mirengoff at Powerline:
In the law, the discovery of this sort of intentional document destruction would quite likely give rise to some form of “adverse inference instruction,” wherein the judge would instruct or encourage the jury to assume that the discarded evidence was harmful to the case of the party that destroyed it. I might be hesitant to apply this logic to the world of scientific inquiry were it not for the fact that the CRU scientists have demonstrated as little regard for honest adjudication of their position as your run-of-the-mill spoliator of evidence.
To be sure, the current head of the CRU was not in charge when the data were thrown away in the 1980s. Moreover, climate change was not such a heavily politicized issue in those days.
Still, Roger Pielke, the Colorado professor who asked for the records, is quite correct when he says that the CRU is basically insisting that we trust it, a demand that’s inconsistent with the scientific method for resolving debates.
One need not be a hard-core global warming skeptic to question whether we should alter the way we live in response to predictions based on findings that cannot be checked because the raw data was intentionally destroyed by the outfit that made the findings.
Ah but one apparently does need to be a person not wedded to the hard core left for their readership or customer base. When you don’t care about your credibility anything is possible.
I did all my Christmas Shopping on Thanksgiving morning. Because of the sources of all the stuff they are coming in 6 different shipments.
In the last 48 hours even though I choose super saver shipping EVERY ONE OF MY ORDERS HAS SHIPPED!
That will make my Christmas very Merry, I’ll have to wrap em all this week while the family is at school. I also have to decide where to put em since we usually get the tree around the 3rd week of Advent.
It goes without saying that the scandal in the Irish church is reprehensible and in some ways even worse than the similar scandal in the American church a few years ago. Legally and morally it is simply horrible.
In terms of a Victory for Satan it is one on many levels:
First it is the victory of the actual sin.
Then there is the victory of the sin of corruption of the individual priests involved and the violation of their vows.
Then there is the victory in the corrupution of their superiors failing to act and abeting their sin and again violating their vows.
Then there is the corruption of the police and the sin of persuading them not to act in name of the church
Then there is the sin of creating scandal in the church.
There is the effect on the people who might reject the truth of the church due to anger over the scandal.
and finally there are those who might not even consider the church due to the news of all of this.
Consider this: If at the very start, the first report in the 60’s instead of giving in the temptation (and it was actual temptation they gave into) they took decisive action, what would have been the result?
The scandalous behavior would have been stopped.
Others tempted to sin would have thought twice.
The scandal would have been brief and confined to a couple of priests and most importantly.
Many innocents would have been spared.
But if’s and buts mean very little, unfortunately the church in Dublin the priests and Bishops and Cardinals involved forgot two things first their scripture:
Thus says the LORD: ‘I will bring evil upon you out of your own house. I will take your wives while you live to see it, and will give them to your neighbor. He shall lie with your wives in broad daylight. You have done this deed in secret, but I will bring it about in the presence of all Israel, and with the sun looking down.'” 2 Samuel 12:11-12 emphasis mine
And second the whole reason for the church to SAVE souls. At the first report it is the job of the superior to attempt to save the souls involved, covering things up doesn’t do it.
Consider that for over the decade Rush has fearlessly proclaimed all of this stuff bunk. He has taken barb after barb over this and has been unshakable in his statements before the media and all who used it as a club against him.
How many other people were willing to do so. Vaclav Klaus? That’s about it.
As Rush has said many times, the pioneers take the arrows. He took the arrows but although his girth is down his skin is very thick and has come out ahead.
And a lot has happened in that time (unfortunately a job hasn’t been one of them) I’ve written a lot of stuff (just under 2000 posts), met some new people and vented my spleen quite a bit.
I’m no Instapundit, Hotair or any kind of big blog, but to the tens of thousands who have visited and have either stayed or quickly left let me say it’s been a pleasure to share my thought and my year with you. May they next year treat us all well.
SCIENTISTS at the University of East Anglia (UEA) have admitted throwing away much of the raw temperature data on which their predictions of global warming are based.
It means that other academics are not able to check basic calculations said to show a long-term rise in temperature over the past 150 years.
They did keep what they refer to as “adjusted” data.
Let’s put this in a way our liberal friends can understand: Do you remember this iconic picture?
The woman above is Rose Mary Woods. She was President Nixon’s secretary who claims to have “accidentally” erased the 18 1/2 minute gap in the Watergate tapes. Lets pretend it is 1973 and All the Watergate tapes were erased and only “reconstructions” created by the Nixon White House were available. Would you have taken the Nixon White House’s word that the tapes were “accidentally” erased? Did you take Rose Mary Woods word? Is that credible?
So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead. James 2:17
In the same way, Science without data is “hypothesis” at best and “speculation” at worst.
If you still want to believe in this that’s up to you, far be it from me to tell you what religion you want to follow but don’t tell me it is “settled peer reviewed science”.
And Roger as far as your suggestion to postpone the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, not a chance! The people feeding at the Climate Change troth are going to try to push through one last big score while the gravy train still exists. Time is not on their side. That have to act NOW if they want our money.
How the MSM decides to cover this will be interesting.
Update: My friend Robert Stacy gives me the best blogging anniversary present there is: A top level link! He also touches on a pet peeve of mine:
This temptation to think that we are morally superior to our ancestors, you see, is the road to hell that Scientism paves.
The biggest problem with the baby boom generation is they never grew out of the teenage idea that they were smarter than their parents. That failure as much as the changes of the 60’s are the cause of a lot of the troubles we have today.
As a person who has been an eyewitness to at least one Miracle in person I’ve never understood why believing Christians have no problem believing all those other miracles but not Transubstantiation.
And herein lies what both Robert Stacy and I have over the climate guys. We disagree on this subject, passionately I suspect, but are not only unafraid to debate it publicly we will still be friends when our debate is done.
A person pushing real science or interested in truth doesn’t shut down debate. That was the biggest clue all along.
Update 2: In comments the discussion is Tradition tradition tradition…
If an employer can use computer forensics to find that Jenna Haze video you downloaded on the company laptop, couldn’t any diligent media outlet or United States DOJ (ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!) do the same?
That will depend on a couple of things, first to the tapes ACTUALLY still exist? They may not. Secondly it depends on how the data was wiped. If the assumption is that they wanted the data destroyed they would have certainly thought of this.
His suggestion is actually rather ironic considering this story, speak of the Nixon tapes and they are in the News again:
The US National Archives is bringing together investigators to search for scribbled secrets from the early days of the Watergate scandal as the chain of events began that destroyed Richard Nixon’s presidency.
The elusive goal is to discover what Nixon and an aide discussed during the infamous 18189-minute gap in a White House tape recording of a meeting held three days after burglars linked to the president’s re-election committee broke into Democratic Party headquarters at the Watergate complex, then an office building in Washington.
Anyone who going all ape over a Mad magazine article really has to get things in perspective. A cult is a cult and to paraphrase one of my favorite presidents Grover Cleveland a Palincult is just as bad an Obama one.
One of the things that I find interesting about the meltdown concerning “global warming” and the climate change e-mails is how it symbolizes the cultural divide.
Not so much Red vs Blue, Conservative vs liberal, Robert Stacy McCainvs Charles Johnson (great timing changing sides btw Charles) but really in terms of how people look at things and why.
Way back in my HiWired blog days I wrote this to Glenn Reynolds concerning the Haditha debate.
Since the 60’s two unifying forces, for good or ill, were removed from the country: the removal of Judeo/Christian values as the semi-official moral code of the public schools) and the death of the draft/aka Vietnam. (actually ending in the 70’s). These two changes had one thing in common, it took two generations for them to have the following effect:
It is now unlikely that a student going to school today, had a teacher or parent who 1. Served in the military or 2. Was taught that moral code in school. To a whole generation now being born these are things that belong to outsiders. This makes the military and religious people outsiders and strange to one group and vice versa.
One important part of that moral code is truth and honor. Judeo/Christian values stress truth, lies are the work of the Devil. That is why contrary to the pop culture the Church’s role in the promotion and advancement of science and the University system looms large. It is a search for truth and as I’ve said before the only reason to be a Christian in general or a Catholic in particular is because it is true.
The concept of honor comes from the base of truth and is why it is so prominent in the military and also explains why the vast majority of people in the military come from Judeo/Christian backgrounds. The concepts of truth and honor are significant and the shame of violating those concepts are dreadful to a believer. Even if one didn’t believe in the religion itself the shared VALUES of truth and honor of the the Judeo/Christian system applied with great benefit to the culture as a whole.
One of the glories of Science is the reliance on truth. The best science consists of the gathering and measuring of data and the constant testing of it. The whole process of hypothesis, test and conclusion is a relentless search to confirm the known and discover the unknown truths of existence. This relentless search has improved the human condition beyond measure. When Christ says:
“you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
he is pronouncing the first commandment of science. The truth of knowledge frees the potential of the mind in as sure as the truth of Christ frees the soul.
What does this all have to do with the Climate Change e-mails? Just this: In two generations relativism and secular humanism rejection of Judeo/Christan values led to the idea that “truth” is relative and that one need to accept and even celebrate relative “truths” for the sake of various causes. This has been pushed culturally and politically with disastrous (and sometimes comical) results, but when that becomes the case in the sciences then bad things happen.
Would you want to be behind the wheel of a car who’s designer decided that he has his own different standard for how breaking and acceleration should work? Would you want to have him withhold his calculations or defend his actions by calling you a “friction denier”? How would you like to finance his production and have to drive your car under those same rules even if you don’t own one?
The subordination of truth for the sake of a cause and the abandonment of honor as a virtue is bad in any field, in science it leads to societal stagnation and decay. It is why daylight needs to be shined on this fraud and on the elites that decided they were going to protect it for the sake of money, stature and power. If it is rewarded or defended and or ignored then we condemn ourselves and our children to a world of superstition worse than any we have yet experienced.
Update: Nameless? Click on the link to the Glenn Reynolds letter I included in this post or on my amazon reviews and you will find my name very easily.
Even your title indicates lack of understanding: “Normal.” What’s normal? Labeling the motives and stimuli of “liberals” and the “elite,” something you’re incapable of understanding? Rationalizing Sarah’s kids’ behavior, when you’d have slammed Obama if his kids approached the Palin kids’ behavior?
Commenting on PETA, as if that has anything to do with the book or Palin?
I’m not even convinced you read the screed. You could easily have written what you did whether you’d read it or not.
As to the screed’s sales, I’ve already commented here where those numbers are coming from. If you’re literate, look it up.
Apparently I haven’t read the book now, and “I’m rationalizing her kids behavior”. What is really amazing is this comes from a top 500 reviewer who apparently has earned respect at Amazon.
I had a funny thought and started to check the other 4 star reviews, he seems to be commenting on quite a few of them. I wonder why the need to go after people?
As I replied in the comments there, if it makes him happy then go for it, but it sounds like a case of Sullivan’s Syndrome to me. This goes to show it affects ordinary people (Look at his reviews, he seems at least as ordinary as I am) as well as pundits.
It brings to mind the School Superintendent in NH that was leading a group of about of a dozen vulgar screaming students outside the school where I saw her during the campaign. Long on angst and judgment but short on answers screaming at Palin, the bus and the thousands of average people in line waiting to see her.
For their own sake they’d better get over it, she could credibly run in any election from now till 2032 so this is going to be years and no politics is worth decades of worry and misery.
…today’s Worcester Telegram had a cartoon making fun of the credibility of the global warming alarmists. They sit on a shrinking iceflow and the person with them says the problem is the sunlight (referring the to the e-mails).
If a newspaper owned by the New York Times is running cartoons like that in central Massachusetts then the jig is up, no matter what kind of silly stuff is running in Politico:
“In the climate change sense, it’s not that every other retail day isn’t bad. This just happens to be the worst day for the environment,
Let me remind you a bit of what I wrote IN AUGUST!
Yesterday Black conservatives protested in front of the St. Louis office of the NAACP to protest their non response to the attacks on Ken Gladney back on the 6th.
Mind you this is a man who was beaten and called a Nigger by a white man, there is some raw film too and the news and film was spread on the net that very day. Nothing.
The delightful Dana Loesch of Dump Dede fame noting the time taken and the incorrect information says this:
If only we had access to a network wherein we could share information, do research, and confirm articles in our stories …
Where is Kenneth Gladney and Kelly Owens’ suds summit? Oh, right. The police have to be perceived as the antagonist for that to work and the victims admin supporters, apparently.
Let me be blunt: If I as a person who had attended a tea party, a person who would gladly support Sarah Palin for higher office and who publicly shows agreement with the president’s political foes had done the same as these SEIU men I would be in jail now, my picture would be all over the news an commentators all over MSNBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, NBC, BET, UNIVISION et/al would be having long discourses on how Tea Parties and Sarah Palin drive people to racism. My black friends would disown me and I would be the subject of public and private scorn. All the country would all know my name and curse it.
The fact that a whole season has passed before we have reached this point is a national disgrace, John Hinderaker and Glenn Reynolds puts it succinctly:
JOHN HINDERAKER WONDERS why SEIU thugs enjoy more freedom of action than Navy SEALS. Because the SEIU thugs are advancing the goals of people in power?
But I flatter myself that my long explanation is pretty good too:
to an organization like the NAACP it doesn’t matter. Barak Obama is the first black president of the United States and the first black president (no matter who he would have been) can’t be allowed to fail for fear that Americans will consider a black man unqualified for the highest office in the land. And if Ken Gladney needs to be beaten, called a Nigger and put in his place to help prevent that failure so be it.
The problem is that they are looking at President Obama and what drives him backwards. He’s not a Black man who happened to be part of the Chicago Machine. He is a Chicago Machine Pol who happens to be black and THAT makes all the difference.
The tactics he uses and the items he supports are driven by that machine background. His race doesn’t mean squat, that’s why the Gladney story isn’t all over the news. If what happened to Gladney advances his goals, like a good machine pol he’s all for it.
It’s all about protecting their meal ticket in chief
…but with a machine on the blink and WalMart offering a laptop for under $200 (even if it was an E-Machine) I figured it was worth my time if I was up.
I woke up around 3 and went downstairs sometime near 4. Since WalMart opened at 5 I figured I’d hit there around 45 min early with an I-Pod in the ear and a book in the hand.
Much to my surprise when I got there the parking lot was already full and the store already open, apparently despite the flyer they decided to open an hour earlier. So by the time I walked in around 20 past 4 the lines in electronics were huge and the laptops were already gone. There was a 2nd WalMart about 20 min away but I finally decided against it. There were netbooks at a comparable price but that wasn’t what I was looking for.
So instead I am home and blogging if I was able to live without it a week ago I can certainly do so now and maybe I’ll catch a little more shuteye.
I gave the book 4 stars and I’ll let you read the review to find out why but even more interesting than the review are the tags people who just HATE Palin have put on the reviews:
This includes “Keeping America Stupid”, “Narcissistic Personality Disorder”, “Quitter”, “liar”, “blithering idiot”, “idiot”, “delusional”, “hypocrite”, “dumb and dumber”, “I can see her career dying from my house”, “ghostwritten”, “sea of pee”, and those are the more normal ones. They also include “goat sex”, “forest gump with a uterus”, “dumb as rocks”, “mein kampf,”, “satan”, “looser” (spelled that way), “phychopathic excrement”, “madame moose-alini” (ok that one at least is clever), and of course the hits on her son: “retarded” and “voice for retards”. There are 24 pages of other tags half or more in a similar vein. It is a triumph for “tolerant” liberalism.
The 162 one star reviews are pretty amazing, I would bet real money that under 10% of those have actually read the book, I would also wager that 30% or more are paid to make said reviews.
The absolute irrational fear and loathing and panic that this woman produces in people is incredible and I’ve seen it first hand. It is palatable and is amazing and in my opinion for hire. I would guess there are people who are actually being paid to do this.
We can expect another 20 years of this as Soros and company with some help from inside the beltway republicans do their best to destroy her. They do this not because they don’t understand who she is and what she represents, but because they DO.
As for the book itself, one thing worth mentioning is how much she likes John McCain. She really thinks highly of him and his approach, some conservatives might take exception to this but she likes people who believe what they believe and stand up for it and right or wrong that is McCain all over.
One other thing you will note is her practical way of looking at things, you see it over and over in the book, she is also not shy about admitting mistakes.
If you are reading this blog you almost certainly have already picked up the book. I would make a request, please check out my review and if you like it then say so as the Anti-Palinites will be hitting the reviews as hard as possible.
One thing is for sure, it is named correctly, it’s the quintessential American life.
It is the single best Companion Chronicles episode available thus far, it is also also unique in two other ways:
To this point it is the only Companion chronicles adventure with three credited actors. Director Lisa (otherwise known as Dr. Bernice Summerfield) plays the waitress.
It is the only Companion Chronicles that doesn’t feature the Doctor.
If you have never seen Talons of Weng-Chiang you will enjoy the episode but not as much, if at all possible watch the episode directly before listening to this episode and you will really have a spectacular time.
It goes without saying that this one should be bought.
My review of the 8th Doctor Big finish adventure 3.7 The Eight Truths staring Paul McGann as the Doctor and Sheridan Smith as Lucie Miller is available at Amazon.com here.
All you really need to know about this episode is that it was written by Eddie Robson he has written quite a few of them and with only one exception they are among the best stories ever written for Big Finish.
This one qualifies as a must buy. So make sure you get that order e-mail to Mike’s comics ASAP.
My review of the Big Finish Companion Chronicles 4.04 The Pyralis Effect staring Lalla Ward as the 2nd incarnation of Romana with the 4th Doctor is available at Amazon.com here.
This is the lowest rank I’ve ever given any Doctor Who Big Finish Adventure Companion Chronicles Adventure and tied for my worst ever ranking for a Big Finish Audio. It is rather ironic since the two of the three I disliked the most both involved Romana a character I like and who is first rate in the Gallifery audio series. Whatever do you Don’t buy this as your first experience of the Big finish Doctor Who series, you don’t get much more boring that this one.
The writer has a blog here and is likely a lot better than this episode shows but I can’t believe how bad this was. To give you an idea I listened to it right after The Prisoner of Peladon and The Eight Truths I can tell you quite a bit about both of them but I can’t tell you anything worth telling about this one, it was that forgettable.
If you are a reader of this author I would be interested in your opinion. Am I just missing something or what?
If you are collecting the entire set I suppose you must buy it. If I might suggest that can be the filler you use when placing an order at Mike’s Comics which offers free shipping on CD’s with an order of $60 or more. I can’t think of a better reason or frankly any other reason to buy it.
Update: I forgot about Terror Firma, which also earned 2 stars, but this one is worse that that one, at least that one is memorable, bad memorable but memorable, this one isn’t.
My review of the the Big Finish Companion Chronicles adventure 4.03 The Prisoner of Peladon staring David Troughton (son of the 2nd doctor) as King Peladon interacting with the 3rd Doctor is available at Amazon.com here.
This is a real departure from the Companion Chronicles series in that the King was a one-shot character rather than a regular companion, but it turns out to be pretty good. This is the 2nd Big Finish adventure that takes place on Peladon the first being 5th Doctor adventure the Bride of Peladon (Big finish 104). Ironically Nicola Bryant who plays Peri in that episode directs this one. It is a great start for her, of course it helps to have a solid Vets like Troughton and Briggs in the pot.
I don’t know if we will see more of Peladon but it’s a worthwhile start.
There is a lot to be thankful for despite yesterday’s disappointment. We are keeping up with the bills, the kids are doing ok. My friend George’s daughter is out of the Hospital, my family in general is doing well or at least no worse and most of the annoyances of life are simply that.
There is a lot that I tend to go on about here on the blog, things that are annoying and just wrong with the country but despite it all America has been and continues to be very good to all of us. For all our problems we it’s still a wonderful life full of little blessing that when taken in all overrides the the annoyances of life.
May our problems and disagreements over things like politics and religion never let us forget how lucky we all are to have each other, the freedom to disagree and debate and the bounty that America has made possible.
A Happy Thanksgiving to one and all and to those of you who know me personally, let me unofficially say, Keep SaturdayJan2ndopen.
Update and an FYI: I’m not blogging any politics today, it will be a day full of Amazon Reviews Two more Big Finish reviews at least will be up with a 3rd I’m writing now and a 4th that is written but for some reason hasn’t posted yet on Amazon. My long awaited review of Sarah Palin’s Going Rogue has been written but hasn’t posted either. If it makes it up today I’ll schedule a link to it.
The way I ended up with it was slightly amusing. Because my son’s car was going in the shop again (I hate power windows) I had picked him and Amanda at College (not a girlfriend just a best friend which is a shame because I think she would be PERFECT for him.) and the thought hit me that I needed a power supply for the Ipod speaker that he had picked me up when he got his job. They were very nice at the Shack but when I got home I found that she had given me the wrong device (not really her fault the package was mislabeled).
I decided to exchange it at once and on the way had a sudden urge to check out a store called NY BLING BLING. It is an interesting little place run by two fellows who seem to be of mixed Spanish and Indian origin. It has almost everything from earmuffs, to cell phones to a lot of jeans and of course bling. It caters primarily to the large Central/South American population in town, how large a Uruguayan Consulate just opened in town that makes two consulates (Finnish and Uruguayan) in a city of 35,000.
I have found over the years that it tends to have basic things I can’t find elsewhere, plus I’m partial to any secular business that sell framed pictures of the Madonna and Child, Our Lady of Guadalupe and other pictures that would have matched the religious portraits on my grandmother’s bedroom wall. Sure enough they had this device that exactly met my needs for a 1/3 of the price.
It’s bulky but right now cheap is a big selling point.
1. All of this money is PAC money, none of it is public money.
2. All of this money is willingly donated by contributors.
Now those CONTRIBUTORS they might have something to say but taxpayers aren’t footing this bill. This is worth noting as is a legit story, how it is THE story this morning however is beyond me. Of course unlike other places, MSNBC will likely not be brought to task by their readers.
You might recall way back when a certain fellow swam against the tide on the Bill Sparkman (it wasn’t me), that fellow said this…
The lazy assumption that we know all we need to know, that there cannot be any unknown facts that contradict the beliefs we form on the basis of partial information, is the basis of far too many mistaken beliefs. I’ve already reported how stereotypes of rural Kentuckians as backward, ignorant and impoverished have resulted in a misleading portrayal of the decent, hard-working, law-abiding citizens of Clay County. (Let’s don’t even get into the Kelsee Brown angle.) And now we see how a too-eager desire to cast Bill Sparkman’s death as a political symbol is leading to assumptions that may be equally misinformed.
It’s a free country, which means everyone is free to speculate how and why Bill Sparkman died. But ill-informed speculation and assumptions are no substitute for facts, and there are still too many unknown facts for anyone to pretend to know the motives of whoever put Sparkman’s body in that cemetery
Note the use of the word “death” and not “murder”.
That fellow had the audacity to actually go to Kentucky and actually do shoe leather investigating on the case. He got grief and ridicule and today he has one more thing…vindication!
A U.S. Census worker found dead in a secluded Clay County cemetery killed himself but tried to make the death look like a homicide, authorities have concluded.
Bill Sparkman, 51, of London, might have tried to cover the manner of his death to preserve payments under life-insurance polices that he had taken out. The policies wouldn’t pay off if Sparkman committed suicide, state police Capt. Lisa Rudzinski said.
Yes, we remember all those headlines at Memeorandum. Yes, Mr. Sullivan and Mr. Ungar we remember all your irresponsible speculation. The people of Clay County, Ky., await your apologies.
Take a look at that Memeorandum thread and note all the lefty blogs linked there. It’s the Duke Haditha crowd. I wonder what they are saying today? 45 min later:
It’s now official: Bill Sparkman committed suicide. So much for “Southern populist terrorism” — and the credibility of Andrew Sullivan. So much for “Send the body to Glenn Beck” — and the credibility of Rick Ungar.
There is a new Memeorandum thread, wonder how many lefty blogs will be on it? I won’t be holding my breath.
Now I’ll say this, given the initial info murder was a rational conclusion. I DO blame them for trying to use this to attack the tea parties and paint those who attended as culpable to murder. Honorable people will come out and say they were wrong. Lets see how that thread turns out.
This has been a bad day for Andrew Sullivan and Charles Johnson and a good day for Robert Stacy McCain. Why is that? Only one of the three took the time and effort to obtain facts first hand.
Will we see the “fake but accurate” meme return?
Update: Bill Jacobson is naming names:
I’ll let others delve into all the sordid facts. What I want are some apologies from all the left-wing blog ghouls who danced on Bill Sparkman’s grave hoping to score points by blaming conservatives for the death, as detailed in my post Ghouls Preparing To Dance on Sparkman’s Grave.
The theory went that right-wing concerns over government power incited anti-government violence. Here are the bloggers specifically quoted in my prior post pushing this agenda:
* Think Progress,
* Steve Benen,
* Andrew Sullivan,
* Crooks and Liars,
* Richard Benjamin,
* Mark Kleiman and
* No More Mister Nice Blog, among many.
I’ll be following these blogs to see who owns up to their smears. And I’ll let you know.
If the left has had a worse week I can’t remember it.
Update 2: Something horrible just hit me: Mr. Sparkman was counting on the media blaming the right for his death for his scam to work. He intentionally tried to frame us for his murder!
As a rule it isn’t proper to speak ill of the dead, but I’m just amazed that the dead was trying to speak ill of us. What a dishonorable act!
I haven’t checked out Charles’ site in a long while but I was interested in seeing what the new convert (great timing btw) to Al Gore’s Global Warming religion thought of the e-mails, he obeying the voices in his head says it is all a conspiracy to derail Copenhagen.
Even funnier he is still flogging his attacks on Robert Stacy, and continues the “canard by association” attempting to taint others, in this case, Hanna Giles and James O’Keefe who are the godparents of the Acornrevelations.
This is the same thing he tried in terms of association with Sarah Palin to attack her book.
Sarah Palin appears well on her way to becoming a million-selling author.
“Going Rogue” sold 700,000 copies — a number that includes pre-orders — in its first week of release, according to a publishing official close to the former Alaska governor. The official was not authorized to release the sales figure and asked not to be identified.
Based on his success rate It’s a shame I don’t have a picture with Robert Stacy, if I can get Charles to attack me with one my interview success tomorrow is assured!
Is Sheldon finally going to experience a big bang in more than theory? That’s at least what I’m hoping will happen when Christine Baranski reprises her Emmy-nominated role of Leonard’s smarty-pants mother in a January episode of The Big Bang Theory. You’ll recall that when last the brainiacs crossed paths, the will-they-or-won’t-they tension between them was palpable. So it makes sense that viewers — at least this one — would wonder whether this time around Sheldon and the thinking man’s cougar would do it rather than duet.
I don’t think it is going to happen because it would be a moral departure that would be too great for the show’s audience particularly considering Sheldon’s mother.
To give you an idea of what kind of comedy it contained here are a few scenes from her previous appearence:
That interaction culminated in a suggestive scene where the audience believed they would hook up and they did, in a way…
How funny was that? Ironically she also did an episode of Third Rock from the Sun as a physics professor who was VERY funny.
How funny? This funny.
There are many fun things in life even in tough times, the trick is to notice and enjoy them.
…who went through the Catholic school system and are culturally catholic but actually don’t know and don’t believe the tenants of the church who do the most to help people justify and ignore sins.
What he doesn’t know or more likely won’t acknowledge is that unlike people in a parish who might privately not agree with one or more tenants of the church, Pat Kennedy has publicly proclaimed his opposition to church teaching on a subject of intrinsic evil. For it is written:
“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe (in me) to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea”. Mark 9:42
Yet O’Donnell proclaims the Bishop who actually bothers to do what he SHOULD do for the sake of both Kennedy’s Soul and his own (since as a Bishop it would be a dereliction of duty to not address it.) he is marked as a “political hack” on both TV and radio.
Now if you want to argue that there is a political aspect to what the Bishop says fine, to call him a hack and say he is misrepresenting Catholic belief, only a person who doesn’t actually believe can say that with a straight face. I suspect he will continue to make these proclamations and keep his regular spot on Morning Joe and MSNBC while Bishop Tobin continues to do what he thinks is right for the soul.
Eventually the day will come when they both find out who is right and who is burnt. I presume O’Donnell doesn’t worry about and/or believe this is an issue. That is his privilege for the rest of his days.
After that he’s on his own.
You know lets do a quick three prayers for O’Donnell, an Our Father, a Hail Mary and a Glory Be. He may be a pain in the neck but you know what, his soul is just as worth saving as mine and I’d like to see both of us arguing politics some day when we are both done here. Maybe he can send an e-mail to Almightly Answers.
And as a nice sequel of sorts to our previous post on leftwing cognitive dissonance, Orrin Judd spots this staggering moment of hypocrisy from the New York Times’ Andrew C. Revkin of their “Dot Earth” blog on Friday:
The documents appear to have been acquired illegally and contain all manner of private information and statements that were never intended for the public eye, so they won’t be posted here.
And they don’t contain any obvious state military secrets as well, unlike say the Pentagon Papers during the Vietnam War or more recently, the secrets of War on Terror, or any of a number of other leaked documents the Times has cheerfully rushed to print.
Back in 2006, when his paper disclosed the previously confidential details of the SWIFT program, which was designed to trace terrorists’ financial assets, New York Times executive editor Bill Keller said on CBS’s Face the Nation, “one man’s breach of security is another man’s public relations.” Of course, much like the rest of the media circling the wagons with ACORN, it’s not at all surprising that the Times circles the wagons when it’s necessary to save the public face of their fellow liberals.
After all the release of this information won’t put American soldiers lives in danger or risk national security so of course it’s not worth printing.
You know eventually if they don’t just fold the paper might decide to just market strictly to their niche liberal market. If that happens then watch it become even worse.
When I first started reading Instapundit there was a blub at the top that said “The NY Times of Bloggers”. I think the Times if they had any brains would set a goal to be called the Instapundit of Newspapers.
If they set that as a goal and acted accordingly what a change that would be.
As long as Hoffman is connected to Palin they will attack him as “Far Right“. So much easier to go against a 3rd party candidate on the Canadian border than it is to risk angering hundreds of thousands of readers who may or may not be buying your paper. Particularly if you are a republican.
…appears to be that it is good, or necessary, or the way things are done or the ends justifies the means.
Joe Conason of the Nation (That’s how you know how much of a niche network MSNBC is, the incredibly far left nation is regularly represented there) compared it to the passage of the Civil rights bill and the tactics of LBJ (not unfairly).
Harold Ford declared on MSNBC that New Orleans deserves all of it and more since it was “snubbed” on Katrina.
The Louisiana Purchase is a lemon that everyone can understand, thus Lemonade is necessary.
Exit question: Since Blanche got 300mill just to start debate, how much do you think congressmen on the other side will hold out for when it comes time (assuming this passes in the senate) for reconciliation?
A: They don’t show the clip, but talk about it in the abstract.
I wonder why they don’t show it on Morning Joe? Likely because it is the most bi-partisan moment on the entire network. Later in the day they are talking to their niche market and they wouldn’t mind burning Sarah Palin at the stake.
If they really thought O’Donnell was so impressive they’d try to get the blogger she went after on TV or at least comment on what she wrote:
In one day I met a role model, and met the liberal media and their crafty schemes. I fell prey to liberal bias, but I’d like to think I did an okay job. We always want do-overs, and I can assure you if I had a do-over with Miss O’Donnell you’d see a much more prepared (well rested) and ready to go at it side of this 17 year old. But unlike Norah I didnt have my note cards with me. I was forced to think on the spot and answer a gotcha question. Her goal was clear, make this teenager look like an uneducated Palin supporting buffoon. To liberals, and the 5 people who watch MSNBC she succeeded. To conservatives, she was the only buffoon during that interview.
Ah Harold Ford: I guess you aren’t above playing “Are you smarter with your note cards than a 17 year old without hers”
And note how he mentioned it as a sideline saying it was “a reporter” not mentioning that it was an MSNBC “Star”. How subtle can you get?
I’ve spent a good chunk of my waking hours doing online linux courses and studying. I have linux on the brain and am very tired.
Tomorrow I re-open my unemployment claim and maybe manage lunch with the wife, beyond that there are a pair of broken cars needing fixing (only the dough to fix one for now) and an interview to keep preparing for (no game night for me this week). Oh and I have to swap out a power supply on a pc when I get the chance.
The good news is since there is no chance of me not waiting at the unemployment office I’ll likely finish the Palin book tomorrow morning but I’m about as mentally tired as one can get.
I sure hope nothing exciting happens in the next 24 hours politically, I wouldn’t know what to write.
I blogged a bit yesterday morning before and after mass but today I just don’t know.
Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin has banned Rep. Patrick Kennedy from receiving Communion, the central sacrament of the church, in Rhode Island because of the congressman’s support for abortion rights, Kennedy said in a newspaper interview published Sunday.
