Watched the 2nd part of end of time online yesterday since I didn’t know if I”d have time to see it tonight, but to avoid spoilers I’m scheduling this review after the fact so you can see it yourself in the US before you hear my thoughts.

Be aware this is one big spoiler.

First of all, an awful lot of work for John Simm in this episode, I hope he got a proper paycheck for it but it seemed to me that he was wasted a bit, not enough “Masterly” stuff.

I agree with my son, there was absolutely no reason for Donna Noble to be there.

The device of the Time Lords using the beat in the Master’s head to bring themselves back was pretty clever and was a really worthy plot, but it was used poorly.

The suggestion that the time lords as a whole went mad was kind of loony as was the idea that they were going to destroy themselves and become “disembodied” was very star trekish. Davies decision to re-write the entire Time lord psyche from science to superstition was really bad.

Ironically this can fit in seamlessly with the audios in the sense that Romana was dealing with an upheaval, she can escape with a small group of Time Lords. Perhaps due to the conflict between Science and superstition. Rassilon going nuts and returning also actually fits with the audios.

Wilf seemed to have very little to do, I thought it was a good parody that he was huffing and puffing, he’s not built for running. He was under used, and there were just too many unanswered questions.

The comic relief aliens were cute but seemed to have not much to do other than the first of two “star wars” sequences.

The climax/solution was lame. It had a lot in common with the climax of Simm’s first episode, it’s as if Davies just doesn’t know what to do with him. Simm makes a great master but it seems that Davies just can’t write a 2nd part for him. Both of his Master stories started great but finished poorly.

This episode was clearly the worst of the two parts although there was plenty of sentiment particularly near the end. All of the years specials were superior. I would rank them (Planet of Dead, Next Doctor, Waters of Mars, End of time. If you consider part 1 separate then that would be above Waters of Mars and just barely below the Next doctor.

I’ve head of a slow death but that was ridiculous.

Of the sentimental stuff at the end, the Captain Jack stuff was predictable, pure Davies. The Mickey/Martha stuff was odd, It would have made sense to spend more time with Sarah Jane as she had dealt with this stuff before. The Rose stuff was very bad to say the least, the Wedding stuff was ok.

I must confess however the book signing brought tears to my eyes. It was a classic moment.

The regeneration itself seemed poor, I think it would have been better with Sarah Jane there but the device of him being alone was the theme of the entire series of specials. The first season regeneration was far superior.

Matt Smith seemed better with a second look, It’s all a question if the scripts can keep up.

It looks like David Tennant becomes Sylvester McCoy in the end, a manic and fun doctor becomes a brooding one.

If it was an amazon review I’d give it 3 stars

Performances 4 1/2
Plot 3 1/2
Writing 2

This really could have been a great episode but it turned out average, it doesn’t hold up well against the other episodes of the Tennant series, and is the weakest of the specials. I can name several worse (Fear Her, Midnight and Last of the Time Lords come to mind at once. I think Tennant deserved a better send off.

I don’t think I’ll buy the DVD.

16 guests so far in the first hour. The ribs are nearly gone as is 1/4 of the 1st Lasagna.

Plenty of people coming, I don’t know how many are long term or short term, for the first time ever my mother isn’t the first one there.

4:45 p.m. 36 people and about 8 have left Need at least another dozen or so.

5:49 p.m. Lasagna #1 is gone, All the ribs are gone, Batch #2 of wings is about to come out of the oven and the Trifle is nearly finished. 39 People and the evening home stretch crowd has not arrived, about 15 have left but there are people in every room and things show no sign of slowing down!

6:23 p.m Last batch of wings is out 41 people and the wine is coming out more.

7:38 p.m. 43 and my son is picking up two more friends at least, the crash rule might be going into effect.

8:34 p.m. The third wave is here, we are up to 50. All that is left for food is 1/2 a Lasagna and about a dozen wings, the veggies and salad are nearly done too, however we have more beer than we started with. weather and illness has robbed us of a lot of people but at least 35% of the crowd is here for the first time! If the crowd continues to grow we may actually need to call for Pizza!

9:32 p.m. 4 Large pizza’s added to the stack of food party still cranking.

11:00 p.m. #51 just showed up, new record. There are an inordinate amount of teenagers here, apparently their parents know that they won’t be given booze here.

11:34 p.m. The last adult has left, there are still 3-5 college age teenagers upstairs playing pinball we are cleaning up what we can downstairs. I’m not betting on any new arrivals. It appears nobody will win this years’ readers prize which was an Amazon gift card.

12:06 p.m. The last two guests have left. Total for the evening 51 guests over the course of 10 hours. Until 10:30 or so we never had less than 10 guests in the house at any time. If it wasn’t for the storm and some sickness I think we would have managed 70.

All the cleaning is done, the 1st Lasagna is about to hit the oven, a batch of wings should be just about done and the sander just passed the street.

The only complications are my mother and aunt. My mother is better but not driving today so my nephew will be bringing her. I will be leaving to pick up my 88 year old aunt as soon as this post is up, I should make it back just in time for the start.

One cancellation Andy from the Right Wing Gaming Room as he is right in the center of the Storm.

My wife’s friend Rose will also miss it but she is in the hospital with Pneumonia. That’s a pretty good excuse.

Joe from the baseball league will be here with his daughters but his son is on his second tour in Iraq so he is excused too.

Steve and family is in Pa so he’s also out.

We will see how it all turns out, I only counted 39-43 last year the wife insists we had 50 so we will see what this year’s count is.

Back in the 40’s and 50’s the Catholic Church in Boston was plagued with scandal, but of a much different nature that the recent ones.

A priest named Fr. Leonard Feeney was teaching that only Catholics could be saved. This was and is in direct contradiction to Catholic teaching. He spread these teachings through the St. Benedict’s Center.

The Church took action in 1949 to suppress this doctrine and finally after repeated attempts to get him to recant excommunicated him in 1953.

And that round about method brings us to my Jehovah Witness neighbors across the street.

Before I could even offer to help they had not only cleared their front but with a snowblower and a shovel started to clear mine. Within 5 minutes the three of us had the front all done.

When I came back from the wings I was shocked to see that my driveway (which is on another street our property is an “L” was ALSO snowblowed including a path all the way to my back stairs and door.

This is on a day when they have a million things to do, and this behavior is so typical of them that I can’t even express it.

Theologically their doctrines are not sound but I’ll tell you this, they have the basics, love of God and love of neighbor down pat.

Fr. Feeney would not have cared for them, but I’ve got to say God has blessed them.

For a clearer understanding of the points that refute Feeney see the Catechism of the Church on Baptism here and on Mortal sin here.
