and then trying to pivot to Romney
“There couldn’t be a starker contrast on this issue than with Gov. Romney, who has funded efforts to roll back marriage laws in California and other places,” Axelrod told reporters on the call.
There is a lot going on here and the clue is elsewhere:
Holder on Sunday told the Detroit NAACP that “as we all know, the reality is that certain aspects of this case are far from unique. And incidents of violence involving young people are anything but rare.”
That is Eric Holder commenting on the Trayvon Martin case, but what does this have to do with the Gay Marriage Debate? everything.
The president is playing a fine game “Gay Marriage” for one reason only, the Black and “Hispanic” communities and I submit the news of the last few days has played into his hands because the Biden statement and all the public debate that has followed has …
1. …reinforced the knowledge that Obama is in fact in favor of Gay Marriage among the activist left. The media understand this, the gay community understand this and republicans understand it. That signal needed to be sent to potential contributes on the left.
2. …means that for several days the economy was not topic one. Any day that the Obama record and the economy is not topic one is an advantage for Obama.
Most important of all, deep within the black community of the south the press conferences are not going to get much if any play. The fiction of Obama’s opposition to Gay Marriage is maintained as the community continues to focus on the Trayvon Martin case.
Remember this is the same president who found it necessary to form “African American’s for Obama” likely because he understands what kind of conversations are taking place in the black community behind closed doors. As I’ve said previously:
His (Obama’s) “opposition” to gay Marriage only helps him among blacks because they think he is telling the truth.
His “opposition” to gay marriage doesn’t hurt him among liberals because they don’t believe he is telling the truth.
These are two mutually exclusive statements, As long as liberals are convinced he is selling a bill of goods to the black community (as I do) and the black community continues to buy this bill of goods he is fine.
The moment the Black Community no longer buys it, or the moment he takes decisive actions (Bawhahahahah it’s funny just typing it) to convince the Black community he means it then you will see a backlash from one side or the other.
All of this is smoke and mirrors, keep the far left money people happy, keep the Black community focused on Trayvon (not the actual developments in the case mind you but the narrative that the MSM created) and away from the Marriage issue.
And smoke and mirrors are necessary because without them, this president can’t win re-election so expect a lot more of this as we get closer and closer to November.
Update: Removed a repetitive sentence that I thought I had pulled at post time
Update 2: Obama publicly shifts on Gay Marriage. Could this have actually been a gaffe?
That’s what it was all about: The brand, plus the political awkwardness created by Biden’s candor on “Meet the Press” this past Sunday. I used to ask whether anyone seriously believes O opposes gay marriage. Now I have to start asking whether anyone seriously believes O would have stopped feigning opposition if it was still a clear political winner for him to keep it up. His “courage” here, as in all things, is about his own reelection chances. If there’s anything for gay rights supporters to celebrate today, it’s the fact that popular opinion has shifted enough that even an opportunist as transparent as The One thinks it’s safe enough to take this position before a national election.
Arch Enemy friend on the left crows a bit in comments. If I was wrong about the “sly” business and it was a gaffe than it and the NYT tweet above is true this switch was all about stemming damage control which means one thing: Panic.
As Karl put it in the green room:
What yesterday’s elections may have told Team Obama is that the bitter clingers out there are bitter enough to give 41% of the Democrat vote in West Virginia to a convicted felon and to ease a ban on same-sex marriage into the North Carolina constitution. They may have concluded that their energies are better spent targeting more socially liberal white college graduates in the suburbs of northern Virginia, Philadeplphia, Denver, etc. than wasting time on trying to persuade Rust Belt Jacksonians to pull the lever for Barack Obama again while (as Allahpundit suggests) considering discontent among socially conservative African-Americans an acceptable risk now. The establishment’s mockery of Obama’s unevolved position may have suggested to Team Obama that painting Mitt Romney as a right-wing extremist is made more difficult when the president shares Romney’s position on SSM.
On CNN right now Roland Martin is saying he has talked to Black Pastors who have supported Obama who say they will have to denounce him from the pulpit this week.
This tells me he has thrown away the south and is playing a minimalist strategy, frankly it is the right move for the campaign, Obama is in huge trouble in his election and he needs to risk a decrease in the black vote in states he is not going to carry any in the hopes of energizing voters in states he think he can win. Better to do it now BTW than to have it come closer to election day and there is the “cool” factor and it’s not like he’s gonna do better with Catholics anyways.
It’s a calculated risk in purely political terms it might be the right one. On a different basis it’s always better to say what you actually think instead of playing games.
Bottom line, if I’m wrong and Chris is right, then it adds up to fear and what does that tell conservative?
It’s crash and burn time for the left so my advice is the same:
Can’t anybody play this game?
Update 3: Twitchy is going wild
Update 4: Morning Joe seems to think this was planned and the George Clooney fundraiser seems to be the slam dunk for me
