Right now a lot of pundits are giving a lot of reasons why Mitt Romney won tonight.
President Obama didn’t attack enough
Jim Lehrer didn’t control the debate
Romney dodged his base
etc etc etc
These are all important points, but people are forgetting something.
In every poll even the ones so skewed that it you would guess they were taken at the SEIU vs NAACP charity softball game the Right Track/Wrong Track Numbers are upside down for the President.
The American People want an excuse to replace this president, Mitt Romney needed do to one basic thing, show the American People that he is an acceptable and competent alternative.
That’s a very low threshold and he didn’t just clear it, he pole vaulted over it having numbers and details at his fingertips, as befits his nature
The people are dying to vote against President Obama, they just needed a reason to do so, Mitt Romney gave them that.
My advice to my friends on the right?
“Ride right through them, they’re demoralized as hell”!
Now is the time to finish this guy off.

Update 2: Consider this from Jonah:
David Freddoso who said on Twitter that if all you knew about Romney was what you saw in Obama’s TV ads, you’d get the sense that Obama’s been lying to you all this time. Romney helped himself tonight — possibly a lot.

[...] of like Barack Obama, that’s the real story of the debate as I put it that night: In every poll even the ones so skewed that it you would guess they were taken at the SEIU vs NAACP [...]
Mitt Romney is a man who has run huge businesses and projects.
Barack Obama has never held a day job in his life.
Mitt Romney is a man who grew up in a culture of study, work ethics and responsibility.
Barack Obama is a man who, well, didn’t grow up but aged into a lifetime of unearned entitlements, favors and gifts.
Mitt Romney gave away his entire inherited first fortune to charity, and millions of dollars of the second fortune he made to charity since.
Barack Obama can’t even get his own brother out of a Kenyan slum.
The only way Romney loses a debate to Obama is snipers in the rafters.
Let’s close this deal.

I would disagree that Romney was playing the Centrist. Centrists don’t talk about how government doesn’t do anything efficiently, and they don’t bring up the Tenth Amendment and defend federalism like Romney did.
Romney will never be a Tea Partier, but he can be a President that mostly makes them happy.
I agree. Romney managed to do a brilliant balancing act, by giving plenty of good things to the tea party base, while at the same time managing to do it in a manner that would not scare away centrists. It was one of the best debate performances I have seen from any candidate in years. I thought romney debated very well in the FL primary, but this one beat even that.

Romney won because he stuck to the Surber Rule.
All I need to hear from the gallery is that you are calling 3 friends who are calling three friends.Turnout turnout turnout.
With TOTUS on strike Obama is lost. He needs to cave and give’em whatever he demands.

Dead on right. Romney had everything ready to go. Facts, figures and great one liners. It was a clinic on how to destroy someone in a debate. I haven’t seen an ass kicking like that since, what, Reagan-Mondale? Reagan-Carter? It’s been a long time. And the VP debate will be even worse. Biden has to be crudding his pants over that.
I think it beat even Reagan. Reagan did well by getting in a few great memorable lines and his engaging personality, even as his opponents sometimes scored against him with less memorable policy points, but romney owned this debate from start to finish. He looked as presidential as Reagan, but he also had a command of policy details that Reagan, a big picture guy, never did. Romney can sometimes be uninspiring in a stump speech, or make some gaffes in interviews, but as a debater he was brilliant. I would love to see a debate between Romney and Clinton, I think Romney would win that too, but against Obama it was no contest.
The election is not over but Mitt Romney passed a high threshold tonight. He has now established that he is a credible replacement for Barack Obama.
“Jim Lehrer didn’t control the debate’
Meaning Lehrer was not totally submerged in the tank.
Moderators of subsequent debates need their diving gears.
Ironically Lehrer was constantly interrupting romney, and tried to feed a few softball lines to Obama when Obama was floundering, but by the end of the debate Obama ws the one that actually used more time. Basically Lehrer tried to screw Romney, but Romney would not let him. Brilliant performance by Romney.
I knew he won, but until I saw MSNBC I did not realize how big Romney won. Wow.
Romney was effective today by playing the centrist. He can probably win the election this way, not as a “true” conservative. If he did remake himself for the primary and now the general election, we may end up with the real Mitt, a real moderate.
Centrists dont talk about the importance of the 10th amendment, cutting spending, or about how gov screws everything up. Romney gave plenty of things to the Tea Party, but was smart enough to do it in a way that did not frighten away centrists. Brilliant performance.

As we see on Instapundit–don’t get cocky. The election is not over till it’s over. Keep up the pressure and run through the finish tape.
I agree, a great turnaround for romney, but there are still 2 debates, and plenty of campaign time left, and now romney will also have to fight against high expectations, and will be compared to his first performance to see if he can somehow beat it.
Don’t need to unseal his records now; we saw ‘em tonight.
