One of the things about unions is you hang together, and thanks to the 2nd biggest union employed by Hostess 18,500 workers will have the privilege of visiting the unemployment line together
Hostess Brands Inc. had warned employees that it would file to unwind its business and sell off assets if plant operations didn’t return to normal levels by 5 p.m. Thursday. In announcing its decision, Hostess said its wind down would mean the closure of 33 bakeries, 565 distribution centers, approximately 5,500 delivery routes and 570 bakery outlet stores in the United States.
The Irving, Texas-based company had already reached a contract agreement with its largest union, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. But thousands of members in its second-biggest union went on strike late last week after rejecting in September a contract offer that cut wages and benefits. Officials for the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union say the company stopped contributing to workers’ pensions last year.
Me I’ve always figured 92% of something was more valuable than 100% of nothing but then again I’m not a member of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union so perhaps I don’t understand these things.
You can’t get blood from a stone, but hey, in the era of government bailouts, free healthcare etc I can see why the Union would think the laws of economics didn’t apply. The Youth of American that voted in Obama wanted him more than they wanted Hostess or Drake’s cakes.
So Hostess dies, 18,000+ people are added to the post election layoff statistics searching for jobs that aren’t there and the Twinkie and Wonderbread and since they also own Drakes that means no more Yodels for my wife or Funnybones for me and my sons. They all become answers to trivia questions.
UNEXPECTEDLY
But hey this is the new age for the left and the unions, I wouldn’t be too worried Obama’ll fix it just you wait and see…
Late last Friday the largest unions — the Teamsters — announced that by a narrow vote, 53.6% to 46.4%, its Hostess rank-and-file had approved the new collective bargaining agreement. (Out of 7,900 Teamsters voting at the company, slightly more than half cast votes). Rayburn and Teamsters leadership both offered up measured words about the “difficult” decision.
But shortly thereafter, word came that the 7,000 employees of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union had rejected Hostess’ proposal. (No details of the vote were announced, though some press reports suggested there were only voice votes at locals rather than a written mail tally.)
In other words instead of a secret ballot, the union bakers have voice votes in public the old Card Check peer pressure stuff and the result? Everyone is screwed and the quest for Twinkies begins:
Hey unions, like the idea of secret ballots now? Update 2: Nationalize Twinkies? Have we really fallen this far?
Who knew this was prophecy?
