While the rest of the country checks out Todd MacFarlane’s family guy version of the Oscars Dr. Who fans in America will be tuned to BBC America to watch the 2nd Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special featuring Patrick Troughton as the 2nd Doctor.
The selection of Tomb of the Cybermen as tonight’s episode was almost by default. Of the 4 part 2nd Doctor Episodes the only other adventure that exists in its entirety is the Krotons and while that episode has the advantage of Zoe rather than Victoria who was a much longer lasting companion the Krotons are such a campy looking monster that modern Doctor Who fans not familiar with the old series would likely rebel.
Next month with Jon Pertwee there will be a lot more flexibility a full Seven Four Part stories are available ( I don’t count the planet of the Dinosaurs as one episode is not in color.) including two Dalek Stories, 2 Master Stories and the introduction of both Sarah Jane Smith and the Sontarans in the Time Warrior.
If that episode was not the first Sarah Jane I would suspect it would be the one but if I had to bet money I would suppose it would the the Claws of Axos.
It features the Master and Jo Grant and the Brigadier and is an excellent representative of the series. Only the Three Doctors would be superior but because it was a special it’s not as fitting.
Do you disagree? Tell me, which 3rd Doctor 4 part episode would YOU choose if you were BBC America to represent the five years of his run?
