Once you have made the World an end, and faith a means, you have almost won your man, and it makes very little difference what kind of worldly end he is pursuing. Provided that meetings, pamphlets, policies, movements, causes, and crusades, matter more to him than prayers and sacraments and charity, he is ours
C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters VII (Glasgow: Collins, 1942)
…we do want, and want very much, to make men treat Christianity as a means; preferably, of course, as a means to their own advancement, but, failing that, as a means to anything—even to social justice. The thing to do is to get a man at first to value social justice as a thing which the Enemy demands, and then work him on to the stage at which he values Christianity because it may produce social justice. For the Enemy will not be used as a convenience. Men or nations who think they can revive the Faith in order to make a good society might just as well think they can use the stairs of Heaven as a short cut to the nearest chemist’s shop. Fortunately it is quite easy to coax humans round this little corner. Only today I have found a passage in a Christian writer where he recommends his own version of Christianity on the ground that “only such a faith can outlast the death of old cultures and the birth of new civilisations”. You see the little rift? “Believe this, not because it is true, but for some other reason.” That’s the game,

Pope Francis continues to confound the media narrative.
One days he’s taking down a Bishop who forgot that whole last shall be first thing:
Pope Francis expelled a German bishop from his diocese on Wednesday pending the outcome of a church inquiry into his 31 million-euro ($43-million) new residence complex.
The Vatican didn’t say how long Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst, 53, would spend away from the diocese of Limburg but it refused calls to remove him permanently. It gave no information on where he would go or what he would do.
Then he’s excommunicating a priest pushing gay marriage and women’s ordination:
The order comes direct from the Vatican, not at the request of Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart, and apparently follows a secret denunciation in the best traditions of the inquisition, according to Father Reynolds.
The excommunication document – written in Latin and giving no reason was dated May 31, meaning it comes under the authority of Pope Francis
And then he warns left and right about using Christ for political purposes
The Pope warned against interpreting the words of the New Testament in a “rigid,” political way. “In ideologies there is not Jesus,” he noted, “…and when a Christian becomes a disciple of the ideology, he has lost the faith: he is no longer a disciple of Jesus, he is a disciple of this attitude of thought…”
Pope Francis continued by arguing that the doors to the Church must always be open and that the nature of ideological thought “chases away the people” and “frightens.” He said those who interpret the Church’s teachings as a way of life that is a “moralistic, caustic ideology” have a “serious illness.”
Let the record show that Pope Francis, the destroyer of small-minded rules, the leveler of right-wingers, the newly-minted hero of atheists and gays who has put aside all that medieval stuff about dogma in favor of luv, still knows how to sign a decree.
Remember, friends, Popes do not govern the Church through interviews.
When they want to teach or to govern, they know how to use the proper means.
The Sin of pride is the same sin from the right as from the left.
