When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
Do not let your hearts be troubled, you have faith in God, have also faith in me.
A few weeks ago I attended a Knights of Columbus event at my Parish where they showed a film the Knights made about Pope Francis: Francis the Pope from the New World
It was the portrait of Pope Francis that the media has done its best to obscure, my reaction was: We need to get this into the hand of as many Conservative Catholics as possible.
I approached my pastor Fr. Bob saying that if more of my conservative Catholic friends saw this picture they would question the pope less. His answer was classic: Either we trust the Holy Spirit to guide the church or we don’t.
Now Pope Benedict has specifically said as a Cardinal that the Spirit doesn’t directly select the pope…
I would say that the Spirit does not exactly take control of the affair, but rather like a good educator, as it were, leaves us much space, much freedom, without entirely abandoning us. Thus the Spirit’s role should be understood in a much more elastic sense, not that he dictates the candidate for whom one must vote. Probably the only assurance he offers is that the thing cannot be totally ruined…There are too many contrary instances of popes the Holy Spirit obviously would not have picked!
Consider the two most extraordinary papal elections of the last 40 years.
After the death of Pope Paul VI the college of Cardinals of picked the affable and friendly Albino Luciani yet another Italian pope in a long line of Italian popes dating back to the 1500′s. The Church seemed to be on the same path that it had been traveling for a couple of decades.
33 days later he was dead and the Papacy landed upon the Polish John Paul II one of the most active and transformational Popes of our time was selected. He would travel the world, inspire millions particularly the young, lead to a resurgence of the faith worldwide and be the ram that battered the first breach in the Iron Curtain that would be torn down before within 15 years of his election.
Jump to a few years ago, the church is under constant attack from the media who totally ignore reforms and positive action from the increasingly frail Benedict who scholarly approach seemed poorly suited to respond in an increasingly wired world.
Then comes the bombshell:
I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.
As Ed Morrissey reminded us last time this had happened the Printing Press had not been invented. Everyone had a bunch of ideas why he did it but few considered that as a man of deep prayer and faith he allowed the Holy Spirit to move him.
And if that wasn’t enough next came the election of Pope Francis that nobody and a full year of the media tying themselves in knots praising and honoring Francis while doing their best to ignore the Orthodox Catholic teaching that he proclaims over and over again.
They are having fits that we couldn’t have imagined. People are taking a 2nd look at the church and while there will be those who easily fall away as in the parable of the sower, there will be those who will find themselves embracing Christ and be snatched away from the pit of the secular world steers to drive them to.
Consider these recent tweets on Marriage…
Dear young people, don’t be afraid to marry. A faithful and fruitful marriage will bring you happiness.

On Pope Francis
Today I ask you to join me in prayer for His Holiness Benedict XVI, a man of great courage and humility. — Pope Francis (@Pontifex) February 11, 2014
Let us pray for all good and faithful priests who dedicate themselves to their people with generosity and unknown sacrifices. — Pope Francis (@Pontifex) February 10, 2014
and on the Sacraments:
The Sacraments, especially Confession and the Eucharist, are privileged places of encountering Christ.
— Pope Francis (@Pontifex) February 8, 2014
those are all in the last ten days, they are all diametrically opposed to the message of the world and the secular press and lets not forget the big one aimed right at the #1 sacrament of the left.
I join the March for Life in Washington with my prayers. May God help us respect all life, especially the most vulnerable

Tell me, these are the public words of the Pope unfiltered by the MSM that have gone out to over 3.6 million followers on twitter.
And that’s just in English, add the 4.7 mil in Spanish 173K in German, 950K in Portuguese 1.5 mil in Italian, 241K in french, 215k in Latin, 186K in (I think) Polish 114K in ARABIC and you got the direct message going to over 11 million worldwide.
None of this has happened in a vacuum and, in my opinion look a lot like the Holy Spirit in action, but strangely enough some of my fellow conservative Catholics who wouldn’t trust the MSM if they told them the sky was blue are putting more trust in the media spin on Pope Francis than they are in the Holy Spirit which Christ promised would be there to guide his Church.
That’s taking counsel of one’s fears but even worse it a temptation to the sin of spiritual pride and that sin will damn a soul just as easily as lust, greed, gluttony or any other.
Don’t fall for it, have faith and if you find yourself buying the media spin or worried, Watch the Knight’s movie on the Pope you’ll feel better.
A new week has come with a new $350 goal to be made to pay DaMagnificent Seven and the less than magnificent mortgage.
Yesterday was a great imitation of Gave 6 of the 1976 world series. With less that two hours to go a single tip jar hitter made up the shortfall and gave us a full payweek in the last three.
It just goes to show you that the game isn’t over, until the last out is made.
The day has already started with a few hits of DaTipjar and if we can get another dozen tip jar hitter at $25 we can have the goal made at the beginning of the week rather than in the closing hours.
It will be much easier on my hairline and I don’t have all that much to spare.
