They’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love, yes they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

Catholic Hymn

With the Pope in America it seems a good time to address the question that has come up.  Is Barack Obama a Christian as the media insists?

Forgetting for a moment that the media’s actions suggest that there is something wrong with being a non Christian, a Muslim for example, there is a big trap for Christians of all stripes in making presumptions about Barack Obama’s Christianity which C. S. Lewis talks about in the Screwtape letters: (emphasis mine)

I have been writing hitherto on the assumption that the people in the next pew afford no rational ground for disappointment. Of course if they do-if the patient knows that the woman with the absurd hat is a fanatical bridge-player or the man with squeaky boots a miser and an extortioner-then your task is so much the easier. All you then have to do is to keep out of his mind the question “If I, being what I am, can consider that I am in some sense a Christian, why should the different vices of those people in the next pew prove that their religion is mere hypocrisy and convention?” You may ask whether it is possible to keep such an obvious thought from occurring even to a human mind. It is, Wormwood, it is! Handle him properly and it simply won’t come into his head.

Remember salvation isn’t graded on a curve, the job of a Christian is not to be better than the person in the next pew, the job is to strive for Sainthood, to follow Christ.

The second trap however is one the media and the White House has fallen into.

The media constantly jumps at any suggestion that the president is something other than a Christian, in fact for the last week the media has gone on the offensive attacking any candidate who does not affirm Barack Obama’s status as a Christian in good standing.

But they forget something very important, something Christ told us himself:

A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit.  For every tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not pick figs from thornbushes, nor do they gather grapes from brambles.

A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks.  “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ but not do what I command?  I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, listens to my words, and acts on them. “

Luke 6:43-47

Or put simply, the media would not have to constantly proclaim the President’s Christianity if his action proclaimed it.

So, two points, every time the Media promotes the President’s christianity it highlights his lack of the fruits of christianity, but while this is true, rather than worrying about the president’s Christianity and he fruit he bears the first job of a Christian is to bear fruit of its own.

Liberal Democrats seem to reconcile their putative adherence to the Catholic Church in curious ways.

For instance, Nancy Pelosi insists that “My family is very pro-life,” while asserting,

“I think everyone grants everyone their position,” she said. “The church has their position, and we have ours, which is that a woman has free will given to her by God.”

That earned her this NYT headline: In Pelosi, Strong Catholic Faith and Abortion Rights Coexist.

Jennifer Steinhauer, the author of that article, prior to quoting Nancy, claims that

For Ms. Pelosi, the notion of disagreeing with other Catholics about abortion has not weighed on her sense of faith.

Or, as Thomas Williams puts it,

For the House Minority Leader, Steinhauersept [sic] wrote, “the issue of abortion rights has always been ancillary to her unwavering faith and deep approbation for generations of popes.” If by “ancillary,” Steinhauersept [sic] means “in open contradiction to,” then perhaps she has a point.

Likewise, Joe Biden told a leading liberal Catholic publication that determining when life begins is “above my pay grade”. At least

Biden agreed that the Catholic faith teaches that “abortion is always wrong.”

Princeton University professor (and one of Ted Cruz’s mentors while at P.U.) Robert George considers Biden “an incorrigibly silly man” who is profoundly wrong on abortion; following yesterday’s Senate vote Prof. George commented,

Today all but three Democrats in the United States Senate voted to block a bill that would have provided at least some protection for unborn children after 20 weeks. Recently 177 Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives voted against legislation to prohibit the killing of a child who is born alive after surviving an abortion. The Democratic Party has gotten itself so drunk on me-generation liberal ideology that it cannot bring itself to accept even the smallest limitations on the killing of unborn children, even fully developed babies who are capable of feeling pain, even a child born alive after an abortionist has failed in an attempt to kill him or her in the womb. How did the Democrats become the servile tool of the abortion industry and lobby? What happened to the party’s commitment to the equal worth and dignity of each and every member of the human family? How did a political party that once prided itself on “standing up for the little guy” become “the party of death”?

Lest you believe that Williams and George are too harsh on Pelosi and Biden, read what the Catechism of the Catholic Church has to say:

Abortion

2270 Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person – among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life.72

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.73My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately wrought in the depths of the earth.74

2271 Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law:

You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish.75God, the Lord of life, has entrusted to men the noble mission of safeguarding life, and men must carry it out in a manner worthy of themselves. Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes.76

2272 Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life. “A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication latae sententiae,”77 “by the very commission of the offense,”78 and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law.79 The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who is put to death, as well as to the parents and the whole of society.

2273 The inalienable right to life of every innocent human individual is a constitutive element of a civil society and its legislation

Nancy and Joe are Democrats, but when it comes to abortion, they plead ignorance and indifference (at best) to the Catholic Church’s position. When it comes to that constitutive element of a civil society and its legislation, they have certainly failed.

Back in 2013 the last time the Government was shut down I had a suggestion for the Republicans on how to win it

the essence of the solution and compromise is not to emphasize disagreement but to advance where we agree and that is what we in the house intend to do

Today as part of the closing of government national parks are being closed, both democrats and republicans are in favor of wanting American’s to enjoy them. We are sending Harry Reid a bill to fully fund the national park system and I invite the Democrats to pass it.

At this point the house passes the funding for National Parks and the Senate can either pass it or not pass it.

If the Senate tables it, or votes it down: During every single media appearance GOP members should ask why the Democrats are unwilling to fund national parks, something all Americans agree on, and let democrats explain why they can’t vote for that spending. This should not change until the Senate either votes for it, or agrees to a conference committee

This plan was foiled because when Harry Reid ignored every single funding the media failed to cover it and only Ted Cruz bothered to push back against the Media’s silence on TV:

Sen Ted Cruz: But Candy, let me press back. It’s twice you’ve said Harry Reid would say it’s blackmail. And I want to press back, because I actually — I think that’s a false claim with no basis. The bill that the House passed on the VA simply funds the VA. It doesn’t mention anything about Obamacare. It doesn’t mention anything about anything else. Now, for hundreds of years, the way Congress is appropriated has been one topic at a time. How is it blackmail to say we think we should fund the veterans? Do you agree? That’s a yes or no vote. Now Harry Reid refuses to let the Democrats vote on that. But how is it blackmail to say, we may not agree on everything but is there anything we can agree on? We ought to agree on

However that was not enough so no bills ever got to the President’s desk and the GOP eventually caved and the media predicted they would pay a huge price for the shutdown when instead we saw the 2nd Big Red Wave giving the party the Senate with several seats to spare.

So now it’s 2015, an election is coming up and things are different because NOW Harry Reid can NOT block spending bills subject to reconciliation.

All the GOP has to do is wait till the MSM starts screaming about food stamps, or government workers or any other thing the left cares about
As soon as they do the House can pass funding for that piece, the senate using reconciliation can force a vote causing Democrats in the senate to choose between voting for spending for their constituents or not.

And Unlike 2013 these spending bills can’t be stopped from getting to the President’s desk.

Let the president veto funding for food stamps and unemployment, let him veto veterans spending and if he does wait a couple of week and pass the spending again and let him veto it again, and again and again until Obama voters scream.

And every single time the media asks about it remind them that the congress has passed the funding for X Y and Z and all the president has to do is sign it (or let it become law without his signature).

The Pieces are all in place for a GOP victory, if they only have the guts to seize it

Update: My plan is a perfect counter to this:

JUST LIKE LAST TIME, OBAMA WILL ABUSE HIS POWER TO MAXIMIZE THE PAIN ON ORDINARY AMERICANS: If the government shuts, don’t plan on visiting Yellowstone, financing your home or getting your tax refund.

The GOP needs to make sure there is a bill on his desk to fund each of these things so that he can make the proactive decision to veto them.
