At Powerline today via Instapundit there is a piece on one of the most incredible mistakes I have seen committed by media:

John and I, as the Christian half of the Judeo-Christian ethos of Power Line, wish our Jewish friends and readers heartfelt best wishes on their observance of Yom Kippur.

So, too, did WGN TV in Chicago, except that in the most epic media fail of all time, they used a Nazi era symbol on their broadcast to mark the holiday:

Variety carried their apology:

“We failed to recognize that the artwork we chose to accompany the story contained an offensive symbol. This was an unfortunate mistake. Ignorance is not an excuse. We are extremely embarrassed and we deeply apologize to our viewers and to the Jewish community for this mistake. We are investigating how this situation occurred, reviewing our in- house policies and making changes in order to avoid such mistakes happening in the future. Thank you for your understanding. We promise to do better.”

and repeated their apology on air

They did not mention in their apology what the “offensive symbol was. It was this:

juden

It’s no wonder they didn’t mention it, almost anyone with even a basic education would know what it is. As Steven Hayward put it:

Really—is the entire newsroom staff at WGN that ignorant? Apparently so. But it’s par for the course these days; I typically find most journalists, even from premier national mainstream outlets, are largely historical ignoramuses.

Think about it for a second. None of the people at that newsroom, many if not all college educated, knew enough about the Holocaust to recognize this symbol? None of them had been taught this in high school? None of them had seen Band of brothers or any movie on the subject? Not a one of them had seen a blog post or any writing that might have carried that symbol and thought: Wait a minute that’s a concentration camp thing? I know that in today’s politically correct classroom teaching the Heroics of Jenner is a vital thing but you’d think there would be some time to fit in what the Nazi’s did?

I think this comment at Variety says it all:

If you have a college degree and know nothing about history: Thank a teacher!

And thank the school boards & universities who shape the curriculum as well

I know you can get the MSM for nothing, but that’s pretty much what most of them are worth.

The ability to reason and think for one’s self in this country has been lost.

Apparently, Kiss Cams are now considered inappropriate at Syracuse University:

The kiss cam did not operate during Saturday’s game between the Orange and Central Michigan University following a letter to the editor published Friday on Syracuse.com questioning its appropriateness at a time when universities are focused on discouraging sexual assaults. During game delays couples kissing for the camera are displayed on the Jumbotron to entertain the crowd.

“We are taking the time to assess the concerns expressed in the letter to the editor. We discussed this with POMCO, the sponsor, and they supported that approach,” Sue Edson, executive senior associate athletics director for communications, said in an email. – Syracuse.com

As Syracuse is my Alma Mater, I am beyond mortified. I’m flabbergasted at the amount of sheer, pure STUPID going on here.  I feel dumber for having read the whole article all the way through. We’re one step closer to Demolition Man becoming reality.

But wait, it gets worse. The dumping of the Kiss Cam occurred because of one letter from a man named Steve Port, who compares the Kiss Cam to rape.

The instances I witnessed at the game encourage and condone sexual assault and a sense of male entitlement, at best. And they are an actual instance of assault, at worst,” Port wrote in his letter.

“No one has the right to forcefully touch someone be it a hug, a kiss or a violent rape. I adamantly insist that Syracuse University student government, the chancellor, the athletic director, etc. review what happened last weekend and seriously consider the ramifications of what they are encouraging,” he said. – Syracuse.com

Well, there you have it. Kiss Cams have been causing sexual assaults for decades across the country. Someone get that Jumbotron indicted already, will ya?

A couple of comments were posted in the article, this is one of them and it was nausea inducing:

syrfan47: “The question to me is not whether this meets the criteria for assault “legally”. The question is; given the context of today’s campus behaviors; why are we encouraging male entitlement in such a public forum. The reluctance of the women was clear; and I was uncomfortable with the Dome’s management condoning this outdated practice. For the record; I’m a guy; big SU fan, was at the game, and I do have daughters.”

It would seem that syrfan47’s own “male entitlement” is not in question. He sounds like a parrot, echoing the phrasing of Mr. Port.  The rest of the commenters nodding their little lemming heads in agreement are no better.

Ban all Things - Easily offendedMany thought the Kiss Cam was a dumb idea, but throughout the comments, most agreed yanking the cam was equally dumb.

It’s clear what has to happen. We need to act! Protect the easily offended – ban all things!

The only relief from this story is the vast majority of comments called this turn of events what it is — politically correct idiocy.

Here’s a sample:

“The kiss cam promotes sexual assault in the same way watching grown men tackle each other to the ground over possession of a ball promotes violence. Sorry, but this guy’s letter is taking things a bit too far.”

“My question is, when are they going to stop selling beer? I think selling beer at the games is promoting alcoholism and the college is sending out a message that you should be drinking at sporting events.”

“I’m offended by all of those who are offended so off with your heads. Seriously this is all totally out of hand. Don’t breath you just might offend the person next to you”

And just last week, the President of the United States scolded Universities for ‘coddling’ their students.  Perhaps the President’s message should have been directed at the general public.

Yesterday when the Pope made remarks on Climate Change the Networks trumpeted it from the highest heights.

However this was not the only newsworthy thing he did:

Given the Obamacare mandate lawsuit and the President’s statement to the Pope concerning religious freedom, the fact that his government is suing them to force them to violate their faith is ironic, so the Pope’s visit would seem quite newsworthy.

Unless you are NBC

Or CBS

little sisters cbs

or MSNBC

little sisters msnbc

or CNN

little sisters cnn

ABC found it much more newsworthy than the others. They decided it was worth two whole sentences!

-NOTED: Yesterday, Pope Francis made an off-the-record visit to the Little Sisters of the Poor to show his support for their fight against the contraception mandate in the Affordable Care Act, ABC’s MEREDITH MCGRAW notes. In late August, the Denver-based 10th Circuit Court of Appeals granted the Little Sisters of the Poor a short-term shelter from the mandate.

That is considerably less coverage that Twitchy managed to give it by 9:51 PM last night.

Given that the idea of the Pope making the republicans uncomfortable has been a constant theme of media coverage you would think that this symbolic move of support for Nuns being sued by the US government might be a tad more newsworthy.

One would almost think the MSM had an agenda when it comes to their coverage of the Pope and this particular Pontifical visit doesn’t fit it.

Update: Somehow Aleteia found time to cover it

The meeting, which was not on the pope’s publicly-released schedule of events, was held just hours after the pontiff met with President Obama at the White House. Father Lombardi did not say where, but he noted that the Little Sisters have a convent near the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, where Pope Francis celebrated a late afternoon Mass. It is likely that he visited the order just after celebrating the liturgy.

If ONLY the msm had access to the same resources as Aleteia does.

I know you can get the MSM for nothing, but that’s pretty much what they’re good for.

I’ve been re-watching Ken Burns Civil War series which is one of the finest Television shows that has ever been made & one of the best argument for PBS back in the three network days.

They talked about Robert E. Lee being opposed to both Slavery (he called it a Moral & Political evil) and Secession but fighting to defend both of these principles he opposed because of his loyalty to the state of Virginia.

It brought to mind this interview with Catholic Vice President Joe Biden:

“I’m prepared to accept that at the moment of conception there’s human life and being,” Biden said, during an interview with Father Matt Malone, S.J. of “America Media.”

Biden, however, said that he would not “impose” that view on “non-God-fearing people that have a different view.”

At one point, Biden also acknowledged that “abortion is always wrong,” but again, he doesn’t want to “impose doctrine” on other people.

In fact Biden has been willing in the senate to fight for and defend abortion.

One could say truthfully that Joe Biden loyalty to the Democrat party is akin to Robert E. Lee’s loyalty to Virginia, so great that he is willing to fight for things he believes are wrong in order to support them.

People on the left keep getting offended when I compare the defense of Abortion to the Defense of Slavery.

But when you consider that Lee and Jefferson Davis who were both opposed to secession were willing to defend it no matter how much blood it cost, how can you not see every pol who claims to be personally opposed to abortion but fight to fund it and preserve to be any different from all those others who fought to preserve slavery no matter what their personal feelings.

Come to think of it, those guys were Democrats too.
