Canada's war on freedom of speech

Any­one believ­ing there’s free speech in Canada bet­ter think twice: The country’s ever-​expanding hate speech laws are killing what’s left of the most essen­tial lib­erty — most essen­tial because with­out free­dom of speech, there is no free­dom at all.

Two weeks ago,

Canada’s Sen­ate passed Bill C-​16, which puts “gen­der iden­tity” and “gen­der expres­sion” into both the country’s Human Rights Code, as well as the hate crime cat­e­gory of its Crim­i­nal Code by a vote of 67 – 11, accord­ing to Life­Site­News. The bill now only needs royal assent from the gov­er­nor general.

The bill, which pur­ports to pro­tect peo­ple from dis­crim­i­na­tion, hate pro­pa­ganda and hate crimes, will pun­ish with fines and prison any­one not using gen­der­less pro­nouns on request.

In a nut­shell, polit­i­cal cor­rect­ness run amok.

Saad and Peter­son tes­ti­fied at the Sen­ate against Bill C-​16, since they both see it as a threat to intel­lec­tual diver­sity. Saad, con­sid­ered to be the founder of the field of evo­lu­tion­ary con­sump­tion, and Peter­son, who refuses to use gender-​neutral pro­nouns for trans­gen­der peo­ple, could be thrown in jail and finan­cially ruined for using a centuries-​old gram­mat­i­cal con­ven­tion in the course of their work.

You, dear reader, may be think­ing at this point, “so what?
That’s Canada for you, eh.”

Think again.

A Supreme Court of Canada rul­ing ordered Google Inc. to remove inter­na­tional search results. Scott Shack­ford explains:

What mat­ters inter­na­tion­ally in this case is the gov­ern­ment is forc­ing Google to remove links from searches regard­less of where the Inter­net user is. That is to say: Canada is demand­ing the author­ity to cen­sor the inter­net out­side of its phys­i­cal bor­ders and con­trol what peo­ple who are not Cana­dian cit­i­zens can find online.

Free­dom of speech is the ulti­mate right. That’s why it’s in peril.

The bill, which purports to protect people from discrimination, hate propaganda and hate crimes, will punish with fines and prison anyone not using genderless pronouns on request.
