From the Associated Press:

Seeking a bipartisan compromise to avoid a government shutdown, President Donald Trump suggested Tuesday that an immigration deal could be reached in two phases — first by addressing young immigrants and border security with what he called a “bill of love,” then by making comprehensive changes that have long eluded Congress.

Trump presided over a lengthy meeting with Republican and Democratic lawmakers seeking a solution for hundreds of thousands of young people who were brought to the U.S. as children and living here illegally. Trump last year ended the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which shielded more than 700,000 people from deportation and gave them the right to work legally. He gave Congress until March to find a fix.

Back in 2007, when George W. Bush, along with congressional Republicans and Democrats alike were pushing a bill called Comprehensive Immigration Reform, I wrote this, reproduced below. I sometimes like to engage in what Thomas Sowell calls Thinking Beyond Stage One.

It’s not easy to find a hardcore Trump supporter in London and Paris, but there is a grudging acknowledgement that the president isn’t as bad as many Americans think.

During a recent visit to the not-so-united United Kingdom and France, almost everywhere I went people noticed my accent and wanted to talk about Trump. I didn’t hide my support. What was amazing was that Brits and French actually listened to my point of view—something that rarely happens in the United States.

A former British diplomat and his wife, who worked as a journalist, can’t believe the importance given to the Michael Wolff book on the Trump administration. Such tales wouldn’t appear in much of the respectable press in Britain.

Moreover, they see the press failing apart with its constant attacks on Trump, losing any sense of credibility on many matters. The couple subscribes to The New York Times, but they find it appalling how politics have crept into the Gray Old Lady.

“I don’t care what the opinion writers say. They don’t have to be fair. But opinions are constantly creeping into the news pages,” the former diplomat said. His wife said she’s tired of the news organization looking at everything through the lens of Trump. Moreover, DaTimes has moved way left of center when it comes to social issues such as transgenderism.

Another friend, who also served in the British Foreign Service, noted that the Americans are lucky that they are unraveling Obamacare. In the United Kingdom, for example, the nationalized health service announced that all nonemergency surgeries were canceled this month because of a shortage of cash.

A longtime friend who’s an expert on the Middle East lauded Trump for cutting off aid to Pakistan because of its ties to terrorism. A retired French banker, who is Jewish, praised the decision to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, while a longtime Arab friend disagreed.

A London cabbie said he understood why Americans turned against Hillary and voted for Donald. “The elites have ruined the States and England,” he said. “Now it’s time for others to try to put things right.”

What was most important was how I could actually have a conversation about Trump rather than a shouting match. It’s one of the first times in months that I felt comfortable about stating my views in public with such a cross-section of people. It’s odd to have to travel outside of the United States to have a civil discussion.

The successful are those who are smart. They are the ones who get it right and the ones who don’t let anything stand in their way. The United States of America was made for go-getters. It was made for those who have a dream. With the power of the internet you can be the success that you have always dreamed. You can achieve this success by getting the engagement that you need. This means the views, the visits, or the sales. Whatever you deem to be success, you can reach it by using these five techniques:

  • Branch Out
    1. The first thing that you need to consider is what alternative channels offer you. You could start a podcast, create videos, write tutorials, and so much more. Branching out is the fastest and easiest way to expand your reach, and in some cases, it can help develop brand loyalty. However, in order to branch out and be successful, you need to add value.
  • Add Value
    1. Pushing out content is one thing. Pushing out content that people actually want is another. That is why you need to try out different things and use analytics to see what is most successful. Finding the winning combination is difficult, but once you do you’ll have the unique selling point that will have people returning to you again and again, regardless of whether you are selling something, or are a content creator.
  • SEO
    1. Search engine optimization is not dead. In fact, it is more important than ever. People still use search engines to find what they want, and not optimizing your site for SEO and using other white-hat techniques will ensure that users will never find your website via Google, even if they search for your name sometimes! Optimize your website, and you’ll be ahead of your competition and enjoy the majority of organic clicks from a single search.
  • Automated Marketing
    1. Personalization is all the rage, because it is becoming easier and easier to do. Personalize a customer or reader’s experience, and you’ll increase your chances that they will return. This can be done through a process known as automated marketing. What is marketing automation? It is the ability to use the information you are given or have about a customer, from demographic information to search history, to better tailor their experience.
  • Collaboration
  1. Collaborating is, and always will be, huge. Collaborating allows you to create something with another, and it also gives you the opportunity to gain new fans or customers.

Working with algorithms is the only way to succeed. That’s because the platforms you use are built not with the little guy in mind, but with themselves in mind. There is no point in complaining about how hard it is, instead, you need to work on building your own brand empire that can withstand these algorithms until they work with you, not against you. Once you reach that point your business will only grow.

I’m remembering the coy saying about the French resistance. “If everyone who claimed to be in the resistance really had been, there would have been nobody left to collaborate.”

A few minutes ago I watched Oprah’s speech at the golden globes talking about empowering

women that has the left all a twitter (pun intended) about the possibility of an Oprah run for the presidency.

As nothing is impossible I won’t discount this completely but I want to remind all of you of something.

Oprah has been one of the most richest powerful women in the entertainment world for a very long time.  She is a person who can make or break a book or a film or a career.  All of Hollywood has paid homage to her for many many years.  The entire media complex hangs on her words, and as demonstrated this weekend when she talks about the plight of women, people listen.

And yet during all the year that Harvey Weinstein et/all were on the prowl she never bothered to speak out against him or give a platform for his victims to do so!

If anyone had the power to speak out and break this open it was Oprah.  Her power and influence was enough that Weinstein and the others would not be able to bring her down for talking, and if they had tried the public would have rallied behind her.  All she had to do was speak out and proclaim “Enough!”

She did not.

Oprah speech wasn’t brave, it wasn’t grand, it was designed to change the conversation away from a single basic fact that Glenn Reynolds put very well.

These guys were a huge source of cash and power for the left, and to expose them and to protect those women would expose the Hollywood left for what they were.

If Oprah really cared about all these things she talked about in her speech at the golden globes as opposed to being a member of the Harvey Weinstein left, she would have given that speech last year, or the year before or the year before that.

She did not.

Never forget that.

Update: Rose McGowan get it

ROSE McGowan has lashed out at the stars who wore black to the Golden Globes, accusing them of “Hollywood fakery” for failing to take a stand against the sex abuse claims sooner.

The Charmed star claims the famous females who united against the scandal “wouldn’t have lifted a finger” to help if she hadn’t gone public with allegations against Harvey Weinstein.
