Fraser: You should allow a man his illusions

Cahill US Marshall 1973

There are a lot of things that you hear in media that are so patently absurd that you can’t believe someone would say it.

That was my reaction to John (Old Yellowstain) Roberts rebuked the president for suggesting there was such a thing as an “Obama” judge vs a “Trump” or “Bush” judge.

Now if he had made that statement in 1984 he might have had a point but having been born in 1955 John Roberts is old enough to remember what happened to Bork, what happened to Thomas, and how both he and Alito were vilified and certainly a man who pays so much attention to the media certainly couldn’t have missed the entire Kavanaugh saga even if he tried.

Looking at the situation I’m certain of one thing

Justice Roberts is furious at Donald Trump stating aloud what everyone else knows, that the courts have become political, that the idyllic principles of a disinterred judiciary of his youth are as dead as bobby socks in a country when half of the nation has rejected Christianity and replaced it with socialism “ends justifies the means” principle.

Ignorance is bliss and by rebuking this truth stated aloud Roberts is able to continue the denial that he finds vital, because the moment he acknowledges this reality he has to make a choice that he doesn’t want to make, namely to decide which side he’s on.

That the thing I’m sure of, the thing I suspect is that his rebuke of Trump is a whole lot more about being socially acceptable to the right set because right now he is the swing vote of the court and he hoped to get reactions like this from the left

Because unless he votes consistently with the left which even he is unlikely to do Mr. Schumer he’ll need all the cover he can get to keep from being targeted by the left for the same kind of harassment in public and even protest at his private home that other conservatives have received.

Closing thought: As Hotair points out Schumer’s tweet is an exercise in irony but he knows the score:

Eh, I think all Schumer’s trying to do here is work the refs. He knows Roberts is now the swing vote on a Court that includes Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. He’s reminding him here that if he wants to be seen as legitimate by the left, he’ll have to do more for them than cast the vote that singlehandedly saved Obama’s signature achievement and kept the Democrats’ journey towards single-payer on track..

Schumer is giving a warning here and frankly I don’t think old yellowstain has the guts of a Kavanaugh to fight back, I think he’ll crack like an egg and I think that’s what Chuck and company is counting on.
