Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez & the Divine Right of Incumbency

There is a gem hidden in the “leftists in panic over Ocasio-Cortez” stories a few weeks ago that deserves more attention than it got:

“What I have recommended to the New York delegation is that you find her a primary opponent and make her a one-term congressperson,” the Democratic lawmaker, who requested anonymity, told The Hill. “You’ve got numerous council people and state legislators who’ve been waiting 20 years for that seat. I’m sure they can find numerous people who want that seat in that district.”

emphasis mine

Now both as a conservative and as a sane person there are plenty of reasons to criticize. She’s not only a Democrat with all of the standard horrible ideas from infanticide to banishing the 2nd amendment “principles” that make the lot unacceptable but she is also a socialist, anti-Israel, radical who positions on economics make other Democrats look rational in comparison.

However there is one question I have for all those numerous council people and state legislature members who want the seat that Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez currently occupies:

Where were you in 2018?

You see while you were waiting two decades under the mistaken impression that a seat congress is a divine right once elected and perhaps re-elected, Ocasio-Cortez her other faults not withstanding was willing to run in a primary and make the case to the voters that she would be a better fit for the seat than Joe Crowley who apparently had the same presumption of divine right that those candidates who waited decades instead of challenging him for the seat did.

The Voters of the 14th district disagreed and Ocasio-Cortez won. You may not like that she won, you might think she’s crazy, you might even think she is dangerous and all of those opinions are certainly valid, but you can’t honestly say that she didn’t deserve the primary victory or her win in the general election.

Now that Mr. Crowley, who was 1st elected in the 20th century before Tom Brady was drafted by the Patriots, is out of the way suddenly all of those Democrats who have been waiting since Brady won his 1st Superbowl who were too cowardly to run before are now suddenly bravely willing to fight for this seat?

Please.

FYI: I didn’t see this tweet at the time I wrote this post but it’s spot on

Now I have no dog in this fight. I think the 14th district would be better off with even a squish republican than either Cortez or any of the potential challengers to her, and if Cortez get beaten it would be amusing.

But I have a whole lot more respect for Ocasio-Cortez than any of the cowards being recruited to challenge her and in a Democrat primary if she plasters her opponent all over the wall, I’d be absolutely delighted.

UPDATE: If she ends up serving 10 terms in congress it would be interesting to see if her opinion changes when it come to the right to retain “Her” seat. If I’m still alive and writing them I’ll update you then.

Please.
