Apparently some things never change:
Yes, the West looked the other way during the 1930s, when people were starving. But the West is also looking the other way in 2019, refusing to see the concentration camps in China’s Xinjiang province. These camps have been designed to suppress the Uighurs, a Muslim ethnic minority whose status in China in some ways resembles that of Ukrainians in the old U.S.S.R. Like the Ukrainians who did not want to be Sovietized, the Uighurs do not want to be fully absorbed into the Chinese state. Like the Soviets, the Chinese have responded with repression. Previous Chinese leaders sought to flood Xinjiang with ethnic Chinese, the same tactic they used against Tibetans. More recently, the state has grown harsher, creating camps where at least 1 million Uighurs undergo forced indoctrination designed to eradicate their language and culture.
Sorry but did anyone expect Communism the single most oppressive and murderous ideology of the last hundred years to start acting any different in its 101st?
Oh and check out the comments section for plenty of “it’s Trump’s fault“
One other thing about that story above, I don’t see a lot of the usual suspects who were screaming “Islamophobia” when President Trump was imposing his travel ban from 5 countries known to harbor terror screaming over this. Why one might think they’re less interested in religious freedom than in hitting the US in general and President Trump in particular.
I found it interesting that the news of Cardinal McCarrick’s laicization came at the same time as this Vatican tidbit:
Pope Francis has named Cardinal Kevin Farrell as papal camerlengo, a post by which Cardinal Farrell would administer the Vatican when the pontiff dies or resigns and before the election of a successor.
The announcement comes despite lingering questions about Farrell and his role in controversies swirling around ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick.
Farrell who was made a Cardinal by Francis in 2016 lived with McCarrick for six years and apparently Sgt. Schultz has nothing on him:
After McCarrick’s longtime homosexual predation was exposed last year, the public questioned Farrell about his knowledge of the abuse. Farrell claimed he knew nothing.
“I was shocked, overwhelmed; I never heard any of this before, the six years I was there with him,” Farrell claimed. “And never, no indication, none whatsoever, nobody ever talked to me about that.”
In my opinion the promotion of a McCarrick protegee the week that he’s booted is an important signal by the Pope to McCarrick’s allies on the left in the church that while while the names may change the game remains the same.
Roger Peckenpaugh 9th inning single coupled with a questionable baserunning move by Mark Bellhorn in the bottom of the inning were just enough to lift the 1924 Washington Senators to their 3rd win in 4 games as they beat the 2004 Boston Red Sox in their home opener at Fenway 2-1
Things started strong for the Senators as Sam Rice led the game off with a double but that would be one of only three that Curt Schilling (L 0-1) give up though 8 1/3 as he pitched a masterful game striking out 10 and keeping Washington scoreless until the 6th when DH Showboat Miller reached on an error by the usually sure handed Doug Mientkiewicz reached 3rd on a slow grounder out with the hit and run on and scored on a 2nd ground out out by Bucky Harris.
Meanwhile Washington Starter Curly Ogden was just as successful but with a lot more drama as the Red Sox loaded the bases in the 3rd with two outs, put men on 1st and 2nd with no outs in the 4th and left two more in the sixth before Jason Varitek led of the seventh with a solo shot to right tying the game.
The Sox threatened again in the 8th Bill Mueller singled with one out sending Kevin Millar to 2nd and chasing Ogden who was replaced by Allen Russell (W 1-0) who retired Mueller on a fielders choice by Mientkiewicz and walked Varitek before coaxing Johnny Damon into a flyout to end the inning.
The 9th didn’t start promising for the Senators as Curt Schilling picked off Joe Judge after his lead off single but after a Muddy Ruel walk Mgr Geller decided to go with Foulke who gave up a single to Goose Goslin getting Ruel to 2nd enabling him to beat Damon’s throw on Peckenpaugh critical hit
Mark Bellhorn led of the ninth with a double right but when Manny Ramirez grounded to third decided to try to take an extra base on the throw giving Joe Judge a chance to gun him down at third for the 2nd out before David Ortiz’s lazy fly to right ended the game.
Notes: Schilling was called for a balk in the 3rd his 1st of the year. Showboat Fisher made his 1st Start of the year for Washington at DH batting 9th and going 0-3 with one K and a run scored. It will be Pedro Martinez (0-0) vs George Mogridge (1-0) in game 2
