There are a lot of presidential candidates, eager to secure the black vote who are now crying “reparations” for slavery despite the fact that it ended 154 years ago and was paid for by literally hundreds of thousands of lives in the most horrible war in the history of the nation. So let me explain for those who don’t get it what “reparations” actually are.
“Reparations” is a political policy being advanced by people who suggest spending money that’s isn’t theirs that they have to get from other people who not only
- never owned slaves,
- whose parents never owned slaves
- whose grandparents never owned slaves
but the majority of whose ancestors either
- weren’t in America at the time of slavery OR
- belonged to the army that ended it by force
And take that money and give it as reparations to a group of people based on race because of slavery even though they
- Never were slaves
- whose parents never were slaves
- whose grandparents never were slaves
Or in other words it’s collectively punishing a group of people for a crime they didn’t commit to compensate a group of people against whom said crime was not done.
There are two incredible ironies here:
Said people who would receive these reparations are, thanks to the crime committed against their ancestors by members of their own race hundreds of years ago, currently find themselves in a position envied by the majority of people in the world, citizens of the richest, most powerful and freest nation in the history of the world where because of its
- relative safety
- rule of law
- capitalist system
offers them a best chance to improve their personal situation in the entire history of the human race.
Second. The vast majority of the African descendants of those who sold their fellow Africans to the slave traders who from the 1600’s to 1808 brought them to what is now the United States would give almost anything to trade places with the descendants of those whom their ancestors sold who now enjoy American citizenship by birth.
That is the ultimate and just revenge of those who were enslaved on those who cruelly enslaved them.
