So Pilate said to him, “Do you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you and I have power to crucify you?”
Jesus answered (him), “You would have no power over me if it had not been given to you from above. For this reason the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.John 19:10-11
As a person who not only supports Israel’s right to exist but who thinks that the Palestinians are damn lucky that Israel didn’t expel them from the lands they conquered from Jordan and Egypt (not incidentally from the mythical state of Palestine) decades ago the next sentence you read might be a bit of a shock.
Rep Illan Omar is not only entitled to her opinion but given her background it would have been a miracle if she had any other.
Having spent a lifetime being told of the supposed “evils” of Israel and being in a community that takes it as a given that the Jews are the worst thing to come into the world since the abortive New Coke (and were perhaps responsible for that too!) the idea that she might have a different worldview would not only be unusual in the extreme but would certainly not be conducive to being elected with an overwhelming vote for people who hold such an opinion.
And even if you could convince her by facts, reason and history that this is false, which isn’t as easy as it sounds as anyone who has debated when human life beings with a pro-abortion fanatic can tell you, Ms. Omar might decide that any kind of public acknowledgement of said facts on her part might prove hazardous to the health of any relatives living outside of the United States and given the Somali gang problems in her district might not be so healthy for any family living here either.
Omar’s fallacies come partly from ignorance, partly from environment and party from an ethnic link to Israel’s foes. Does that give her a pass in my mind? Nope but it’s the reason why I hold her in less contempt than her enablers in the Democrat party.
You see the Democrat party in general and their leadership in particular don’t have the background that Ms. Omar has. They haven’t spent a lifetime being told of the supposed “evils” of Israel. They haven’t lived in a community that takes it as a given that the Jews are the worst thing to come into the world since the abortive New Coke. On the contrary they have had access to the actual facts on the ground both through public means and via means made accessible through their roles in congress and elective office Finally neither they nor their relatives have a physical risk of danger by in denouncing this kind of talk as the nonsense that it is.
The Democrat leadership doesn’t have the excuses of ignorance, environment or for the vast majority of them, ethnicity. This is all Marxist utilitarianism, so until they are made to believe that the cost of backing Omar outweigh the ghastly Tom Hagen math that they subscribe to, they will be in her corner and protect her.
That’s why my contempt for Omar pales before my contempt for the Democrat party and its media enablers.
