Lenten Reflections Third Sunday of Lent No Other Gods…

Today I’d like to show you something that confirms a point I made earlier about God’s laws are for our benefit rather than his, even the 1st commandment:

I, the LORD, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery.  You shall not have other gods besides me.

You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; you shall not bow down before them or worship them. For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishments for their fathers’ wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation but bestowing mercy, down to the thousandth generation, on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Deuteronomy 5:6-10

Now consider this item for sale at Amazon.com in the context of that commandment:

This is not a photoshop or a parody, this is an actual Robert Mueller votive candle available on amazon. They offer several different styles along with prayer candles of other political figures And they are not the only ones who sell things of this nature

With yesterday’s news concerning the Mueller report I suspect that his candles will be heavily discounted if not pulled from the shelves of the stores carrying them which makes my point concerning the 1st commandment. God’s law that we only worship him is not just about giving himself the glory he is due, but it’s to keep us safe from putting our faith in false Gods or things that can’t save us. And don’t be deceived, while this example might be rather obvious, setting up false God is something that we are constantly tempted to in ways much more subtle and cunning than this.

If we set up any idol, whatever it may be, and make it an object of our faith, trust and adoration we are making a God and if you put your trust in any God other than God you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.

This Lent let us resolve to keep our faith in the God who made us rather than setting up a God of our own creation, whatever it might be.
