Lenten Reflections 5th Tuesday in Lent: Unhidden Treasures

Yesterday we talked about hidden treasures in the faith today I’d like to talk about some treasures that are not hidden but might not be recognized for what they are.

At mass this week there was an inordinate amount of background noise from a plethora of young children under five all making noise at once and when I say “inordinate” I mean incredible because there is always a steady supply of such noise at our Sunday masses every weekend because we have a lot of large families with a lot of small children and lots of small children confined in a space means one thing: Noise!

Now as you might guess this can be a distraction during mass. When it is that becomes a source of embarrassment for the parents and for others a source of great annoyance with neither noticing at the time the gift they have been given.

A church full of noisy young children on Sunday today means a Catholic school full of young children in a five years which likely will add up to a church full of parishioners twenty years down the line, while a church without those noisy children may not still be open 20 years later.

So the next time you see that noisy child at mass go up and thank that embarrassed parent for their noisy little treasure now that will help make sure your parish will still be there later
