At this point I have no idea how this fire started, we don’t know if any­one was hurt but given that it started on the roof odds are peo­ple who were inside got out and those wait­ing to get in were able to reach safety. I hope this is the case.

It’s true that the Cathe­dral might be rebuilt and the var­i­ous items destroyed might be repli­cated, but as I watch Notre Dame burn on Mon­day of Holy Week a few hours after I was read­ing Jere­miah I can’t help but think that there is no more per­fect metaphor for the state of Chris­t­ian Europe in gen­eral and France in par­tic­u­lar and that will not be rebuilt so easily.
