Cyber attacks have real world consequences to those attacked, Now Israel has given Gaza cyber attackers a taste of real word consequences:
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has launched a physical attack on Hamas in immediate response to an alleged cyber-assault. The IDF hit a building in the Gaza Strip with an airstrike after claiming the site had been used by Hamas cyber operatives to attack Israel’s cyber space.
The IDF claimed it stopped the attack online before launching its airstrike on Hamas. It claims it has now wiped out Hamas’ cyber operational capabilities.
Israel Defense Forces said via Twitter: “We thwarted an attempted Hamas cyber offensive against Israeli targets. Following our successful cyber defensive operation, we targeted a building where the Hamas cyber operatives work. HamasCyberHQ.exe has been removed.”
Robert Spencer has this to say:
I bet Hamas is crying “foul”, they never saw that coming, it’s been convention to counter Cyber Attacks with further Cyber Attacks, but there are no rules, and to be honest Hamas would have no online infrastructure to attack back anyway, there’s not exactly some high tech network around their major industries of rocket and tunnel building, and it’s not in the Israeli nature to start attacking any civilian infrastructure intentionally.
For some odd reason I suspect that Twitter, facebook and google will not be banning the IDF’s account anytime soon.
