32 years ago I opened a hobby shop in Fitchburg MA at the ripe old age of 24 and to promote the store I started a face to face tabletop baseball league.
We started with Avalon Hill’s Status Pro Baseball when that went away (it’s now back here btw) we did one year of the classic Strat-o-matic before settling on a game called Dynasty Baseball which grew out of a game called Pursue the Pennant.
The weather, individual park adjustments and the improved injury and bizzare play list, combined with a greater variety of ratings and results (particularly on defense where players are rated separately on range, and errors) made it in our opinion the best of the batch and the league continued to use this game long after 1st my store and 2nd days of playing were gone.
I toyed with reviving the old face to face league this year but with one of the players now in Minnesota I got into the online version of the game instead. Other than not physically rolling the dice myself it has every thing the old league did and with my eyes closer to 60 than 20 these days not reading small charts is an advantage although in fairness after a while we had them practically memorized anyways.
There are online versions of all three game available but of the three Dynasty has one advantage that the others do not, the Annual USA Today All Time Great Teams Tournament.
Tomorrow Night starting at 8 PM 64 teams from last year’s Champion Red Sox to the 1924 Washington Senators will be vying for the championship in a six round single elimination tournament. The bad news is that as of this writing 41 of those slots (including those 1924 Senators taken by me) have been filled and if you are a fan of the 1982 Milwaukee Brewers, or the 1970 Orioles, or the 2017 Dodgers or the 1994 Expos or the great Yankee teams of 1998, 1957, 2009, 1039 or 1927 you’re out of luck. However there are still a lot of great all time teams out there from the 1957 Milwaukee Braves to the Impossible Dream 1967 Red Sox and plenty more.
To be sure there is a degree of luck involved, You as manager can choose your 25 man roster, build the right lineup and put the best defense on the field or have the optimum matchup at the plate, and there will be times when the player just doesn’t come through. To put it another way, when the odds are 99% that your pitcher makes the play, once out of every 100 times he’ll airmail that ball and as I discovered in a recent tournament you are always just one outfield collision away from a starting outfield of Andrew Benintendi in left Jackie Bradly Jr in center and Mookie Betts in Right to a starting outfield of JD Martinez in Left, Andrew Bennintendi in center and Brock Holt in right.
So if yesterday’s All Star Game wasn’t enough for you, get over to the Dynasty online site fire up that old IE browser that’s been sitting there and sign yourself up decide if the strong rotation of the 1984 Padres or the 1968 Tigers are a better choice than the Big Bats of Oakland’s Bash Brothers or the Champion Bluejays teams of Carter & Molitor.
One warning, you might find yourself hooked pretty quick.
