The Only Question that Matters in Election 2020

After watching this video I have the following question for the left that insists that Trump is beyond the pale and must be replaced.

What assurance do we have that things worse than this…

…will be faced by Conservatives in general and Trump supporters in particular if you are granted power?

Key Phrase: “Friendly Room”

We’re already talked a bit about how Beto O’Rourke’s admission in front of TV camera concerning taxing churches has confirmed what we’ve all known for years concerning the left. Now comes the left with the “Beto as Strawman” argument claiming that he’s a nobody, a non-entity who doesn’t really matter:

Given his low and static polling, it’s hard to tell what, exactly, Beto O’Rourke hopes to accomplish by staying in the presidential race. But while his actual goal seems a bit elusive, he is increasingly playing a very specific role: the human straw man, the embodiment of every seemingly irrational conservative fear about what the left really wants.

That’s Jordan Weissman arguing in Slate that O’Rourke’s positions aren’t actually positions of the left and all he is doing his stoking conservative fears. This is only part of his attack on Robert Francis O’Rourke

This is not the first time O’Rourke—a politician, it should be noted, without a constituency: no district, almost no support in the polls—has promised to make conservatives’ worst nightmares come true. After adopting gun control as a marquee issue following the mass shooting in El Paso earlier this year, O’Rourke promised a mandatory gun buyback program for assault weapons, memorably telling a moderator, “Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47.” Not long after, Trump and Republicans blamed his comments for making it harder to get a gun control deal done in Congress. (Yes, that’s a bit rich coming from the GOP, but I’ll come back to that).

These are not the only far-left positions Beto has staked out recently. He’s strongly
pro reparations, for instance. But his comments about churches and guns are especially remarkable, in that he’s essentially adopting unpopular stances that Democratic politicians have spent years claiming are unfair caricatures of their actual beliefs. He is turning himself into a walking straw man, the non-fringe guy Republicans can reliably point to when they want to say: “See, the libs really do want to take your guns and shut down your churches.”

emphasis mine

There are two problems with this man’s point. The 1st is highlighted by the emphasized text. It’s rather comical to see this argument given that it was the same lefty media created him out of the whole cloth, extolling Mr. O’Rourke, promoting him as “Beto” as a counter to Ted Cruz authentic ethnicity and put him up and the sign that Texas is finally turning their way. They drew millions of dollars from liberal activists all over the country in his failed effort for senate seat and then floated him as a potential presidential candidate before they knew that the Democrat field would become large enough to field a shirts vs skins Basketball game with benches for both teams.

But it’s the second point that really give the lie to the entire piece and it comes from four simple words in the 1st sentence of the piece following the embedded video (again emphasis mine):

O’Rourke’s comments drew a warm round of applause in the friendly room, and riled conservatives, who have spent years worrying that Democrats might try to do such a thing.

That’s the key line, the room was full of Democrat activists, the people who give the money, who put the pressure on candidates and decide who can choose to make hell for any candidate who doesn’t toe the line.

  • Did those activists boo or cat call that line making it clear that this is not what Democrat believe?
  • Did they rush to defend the black church which had for so many years been the place, despite existing tax laws where Democrats openly campaigned organized and raised money?
  • Did they defend conservative Muslims who have increasingly become an important part of the Democrat coalition?
  • And most important of all did any Democrat candidate rush to clearly state that this is completely contrary to what the Democrat party in general or they in particular believe?

The answer to all of these questions is not just no but HELL NO and the reason for this is the same as why when Joe Biden they didn’t do any of these things when Joe Biden went all in on gay marriage in 2012 because he knew that this is what the people who matter in the party believe..

Beto is playing a similar gambit. He understands that the people who matter in the party along with the college students taught by their minions in school are already at this place. He furthermore is in a can’t lose proposition for him. At worst by forcing the issue he raises his profile and lasts longer int he primaries ensuring him face time for a while. At best he’s getting some chits in for next time around and assuring himself of good speaking fees for the next four years.

There are many descriptions that can be made of these moves that are apt, but “Strawman” is not one of them, in fact “Strawman” is best used to describe those on the left who are trying to pretend that Beto’s opinions are an outlier rather than someone saying aloud what everyone knows.

Update: added link and image plus this Atlantic link via Instapundit which touches on a cost that the left, in my opinion, simply doesn’t care about.

An Elizabeth Warren Hit is best the “Hillary is Running” Test

The sudden appearance of Hillary Clinton on the political scene coupled with the latest verse of the Trump Song latest failed Trump hit that boomeranged onto Joe Biden has led some to speculate that Hillary is considering a late entry into the election 2020 race.

While I must confess this is the type of dream scenario for the GOP that would akin to Lynda Carter suddenly deciding that she simply can’t live another day without me there is an actual thing to watch for to decide if this has a basis in reality of if the GOP will wake up and find yourself with the less entertaining prospect of being perfectly happy in destroying the current Democrat field in 2020.

You see if Hillary is just trying to bait people and perhaps cause folks with power and influence to think she’s coming back in, she would do what she’s doing and hope that enough people decide it is worth throwing a few tens of thousands the way of the Clinton foundation as a cheap form of insurance.

But with Bernie on the ropes due to heart issues and Biden being hit by the latest attempt to target Trump the person left in the race that would have to be taken out for Hillary to have a clear field is Elizabeth Warren.

So keep an eye out over the next few weeks to see if any kids of “surprise” news comes out concerning the Senator form Massachusetts of if yet another attempted attack on Trump happens to backfire on Elizabeth Warren particularly if the source is known to be Clinton friendly.

Because if any of that happens, odds are she’s in.

What If it was a LGBTQ Banner? Running from Beto, Chick Fil A does Matt 6:33, Skipping school and Nevertrump for Biden under the Fedora

You might remember the cheerleaders who were in trouble for unfurling a Trump banner at a game. That caused some fuss and with word that parents were planning to attend with American flags, what does the district do cancel the next game:

Ask yourself one question.  If the banner had been a global warming banner, or a LGBTQ banner or an Obama banner how would the media have reacted?  Would there be any other story in the news?

Beto O’Rourke’s “we’re going to take your guns” comments are causing a lot of fear and grief, among Democrats who privately would love to say what he said but knows that it would destroy them. In fact I would wager that there are several house seats and senate seats that are going to go GOP this year thanks to that statement.

Oh and while we’re on the subject, how can you buy back what you don’t own? This is Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce

Many years ago I covered a protest against Chick-Fil-A back in the days when there was only one location in the state. Ten years after the left decided to make them public enemy number one they are now the #3 restaurant chain in the US and have more than doubled sales.

I guess their foes didn’t realize that when Christ said… ” But seek first the kingdom (of God) and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. ” he meant it

Just for the record if I was in school and it was made clear that the school, the news media and the whole world would celebrate me if I skipped for a day, I’d jump on that bandwagon laughing my ass off…until my parents found out and then I’d get off in a hurry.

So let’s not pretend that this climate protest was anything but a stunt

The latest verse in the “I’m the MSM I am song” is apparently bad news for Never Trump republicans as it has the potential to hurt Joe Biden by opening him up to scrutiny that he can’t handle and put them in the position of having to either support a Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren or stay home.

I don’t see the confusion for them, while there are a few Nevertrumpers like Allahpundit for whom any democrat is beyond the pale apparently for the other “true conservatives” Obamacare, abortion and open borders are all fine as long as it comes from old Joe.

That tells me all I needed to know about how conservative they ever were.

Saudi Oil Yawn, Hate Crime Shortage Continues, Beto’s actual target, Sperm Donor Lottery and the right answer from Steve Roberts under the Fedora

Are you worried about a spike in oil prices because of the attack on the Saudi oil fields? Right Wing Granny isn’t:

I have no idea what impact this will have on world oil prices. I do know that Saudi Arabia will work to repair the damage as soon as possible. I have no doubt that Iran is violating the sanctions on its oil exports, so if the price of oil rises significantly, Iran may be able to pull itself out of its current economic difficulties and calm its population. America will continue to prosper as oil prices rise because we are now a net exporter of oil rather than a net importer. Because of the policies of President Trump, we are in a very different situation than we were during the oil crisis of the 1970’s.

The real irony of course is that if oil prices DO go up it makes other fracking locations viable that can be re-opened. Of course if Hillary and the Democrats had been elected this wouldn’t be an issue and we would now be in crisis

Iran Russia and China have already lost, their best chance to win the next one is for Trump to lose re-election

Those rules of economics apply to hate crimes too, or put simply if the supply of hate crimes is not sufficient to keep up with demand, then more must be produced artificially:

A former NFL player has been accused of trashing a restaurant and an ice cream shop he owned near Atlanta to make it look like a hate crime.
Gwinett County police say they found the n-word, “monkey,” “MAGA” and
swastikas scrawled on the walls and booths of the two businesses, Create & Bake Pizza and Coughman’s Creamery in Lawrenceville.

Edawn Coughman, 31, of Buford, was arrested Thursday on charges of false reporting a burglary, insurance fraud and concealing a license plate before being bonded out of jail, police said.

Is this an aspiring Kaepernick or just an insurance fraud? Either way it just goes to show that making the NFL and the good paydays that come with it doesn’t guarantee you’re set for life.

There’s an old joke about a guy losing his keys and searching under a lamp a block away because he can see better there. Fisherville Mike is reminding me of it:

If you’re worried about mass shootings but unwilling to go door to door to look for assault rifles, it’s inevitable that virtually all of the people whom you end up disarming are people whom you didn’t need to worry about in the first place.

That of course assume’s that the goal is to stop mass shootings rather than disarm the people who might be willing to take arms against an imposed tyranny.

That’s the actual goal and to Beto & company it’s a feature not a bug.

Stacy McCain notes the irony of this case of a lesbian mom suing over a sperm bank donor not being what he claimed to be.

Danielle Rizzo doesn’t believe in any of that “Thou shalt not” stuff. No, she believes in Science! Her children didn’t need a father. All she and her lesbian “partner” needed was a sperm donor, and Science would take care of the rest. What could possibly go wrong? Only everything, it turns out, so that “her relationship collapsed” and now she and her two autistic sons are on Medicaid, living in her parents’ basement.
This story was brought to my attention by
Rational Male author Rollo Tomassi, who has a saying: “Hypergamy doesn’t care.” “Hypergamy prompts women to seek out ‘winners’, they don’t care how the man won, just that he won,” as Rollo has observed, and we see how this applies even with lesbians choosing sperm donors on the basis of online profiles. Being tall, claiming to have a master’s degree and a professional career — H898 seemed like a “winner,” and it never occurred to Danielle Rizzo to wonder about H898’s motives for becoming a sperm donor.

Maybe the church’s teaching on this stuff aren’t so foolish after all, but let’s also remember that the teaching of the church is that these two boys are children of God whose value in the eyes of God is not dependent on the origins of their birth.

There is a lot of hoopla about the death of Cokie Roberts who came from a very Democrat family out of Louisiana to become a fixture on television news, but amid all the tributes going out there is a line from her husband that is some of the best advice you’ll ever hear:

Marrying the right person is the single most important decision you’ll ever make in your life. Everything else is secondary.

That’s advice that Danielle Rizzo could have used

Report From Louisiana Extra! Governor’s Election Heats Up with Miraculous Budget Surplus

Editor’s Note (DTG): While going through posts for the writers payday I found this post at the old blog in draft. For some reason it didn’t go up at the old blog, likely do to link issues. After reading it I’ve deemed it good enough to put up and pay for it, so slightly later than expected here via the last big of grief the old GoDaddy hosting site can give us is an election report from Pat Austin originally dated Sept 14th

The Washington Post has designated the Louisiana governor’s race as one of the top five governor’s races to watch in 2019-20.

John Bel Edwards has fairly high approval ratings (mid 50s) and is fairly adept at playing both sides of the line. He signed one of the strictest abortion bills in the country and he oversaw a massive Medicaid expansion. He probably feels fairly safe with the teacher vote because his paltry $1000-a-year raise allows him to say he gave the teachers their first raise in many years.

All in all, I think Edwards feels pretty safe.

His two Republican challengers, Eddie Rispone and Ralph Abraham, are splitting the Republican vote and it’s entirely possible that Edwards can stay comfy in his leather chair without having to worry about a runoff election. Should one of those two Republicans drop out, it might be a different story, but nobody is talking about that.

Adding more fuel to the gubernatorial debate stage will be the fact that now the governor’s office has miraculously discovered a budget surplus:

“Louisiana likely will have a $500 million budget surplus for the most recent fiscal year, significantly more than the $300 million initially thought, Gov. John Bel Edwards’ administration said Friday, setting off a new round of debate in the governor’s race over the state’s financial situation.

“Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne told lawmakers in a joint budget hearing that the larger surplus will allow the state to pay for “dramatic needs” in infrastructure, including a $14 billion backlog in road and bridge projects, and the Edwards administration cast the news as proof the state has emerged from years of uncertainty with a stable budget.”

Louis Gurvitch at The Hayride would like to remind everyone of the facts: Here are the plain facts: “Taxes are way up, the state’s oil and gas industry is being destroyed by lawsuits and over-regulation, and Louisiana’s percentage increase in government spending is the highest in the nation! Don’t even bother to ask about the government reforms we were promised…”

Gurvitch speaks the truth. I love Louisiana, but we are not attracting new business with the excessive tax burden we have in this state, and we are indeed over-run by trial lawyers.

The primary is October 12. We will see then if Edwards stands alone or if he will go to a runoff.
