This tweet from governor Cuomo of NY:

is unintentionally hilarious for two reasons.

#1 You can’t make NYers obey the law, that’s illegal!

Cuomo is basically attacking Donald Trump for the supreme crime of forcing people in New York to obey the law as written and how does he say he’s going to stop him, by going to the courts and arguing that it’s against the law to make people obey the law.

This begs the obvious question. If Mr Cuomo believes it’s OK for people in NY to disobey and ignore the law if they don’t like it, does that mean that it’s ok for Donald Trump and the administration to disobey and ignore any court ruling against him on this issue?

#2  NY won’t demonize diversity, except for diversity of Opinion!

Was it not just three years ago the Governor Cuomo was stating emphatically that if you are pro-life or pro-gun you aren’t welcome in NY?

The Republican Party candidates are running against the SAFE Act — it was voted for by moderate Republicans who run the Senate! Their problem is not me and the Democrats; their problem is themselves. Who are they? Are they these extreme conservatives who are right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay? Is that who they are? Because if that’s who they are and they’re the extreme conservatives, they have no place in the state of New York, because that’s not who New Yorkers are.

As I wrote at the time:

Since we pro-life types are not welcome in NY anymore it might behoove us to use some kind of identification so that state officials can mark us undesirables if we enter or pass through the state. I understand the symbol to the right was quite popular not a very long time ago for that very purpose.juden

It’s also my understanding that people wearing such a mark were prevented from owning and or possessing firearms by the state, which was of course for their own good as such people could not be trusted with dangerous weapons, particularly people as extreme as they who opposed the sane and reasonable policies of the state that only wanted what was best for them.

Which leads to obvious question two  How will Governor Cuomo assure his friends on the left that his defense of those 42,000 will not include defending any pro-life or pro-2nd amendment positions.  Or does he automatically assume that all of these 42,000 have the same political, religious and 2nd amendment positions that he does?

Cuomo is a joke that New York has willingly played on itself.

Let me give Governor Andrew Cuomo a lesson in cause and effect.

When you make statements like this:

Who are they? Are they these extreme conservatives who are right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay? Is that who they are? Because if that’s who they are and they’re the extreme conservatives, they have no place in the state of New York, because that’s not who New Yorkers are.

it won’t matter to gun manufacturers if you’re running an ad like this:

because, with that first statement in mind, That ad will play like this speech…

…to Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan

leading to this end result:

Remington Outdoor Co. plans to open a 500,000-square-foot factory in Alabama that would employ 2,000 people, and the Military Times reported today.

How much money does that mean your state missed out on…

“The company is making the move as an expansion of capacity, production and research,” a source told Yellowhammer on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. “The demand for Remington products has skyrocketed recently, for obvious reasons, so they need to increase their production capacity. They will be expanding their research capabilities with the Alabama plant, too.”

The initial estimated impact on Alabama’s economy will be roughly $87 million.

…that’s a lot.  While the Cuomo team spins:

others are cheering:

“I’d be more than excited, hysterical, yes I’d be very excited,” said Robby Easterling at JC’s Guns and Tackle. Easterling said it doesn’t surprise him that Remington may have its eye on Huntsville. ”They know we believe in our 2nd Amendment rights and we stand by them.”

Governor Cuomo and his civilian disarmament allies have some ‘splainin’ to do.

And casting blame:

A union official said Saturday the Remington Arms Co.’s decision to open a manufacturing plant in Alabama does not bode well for Ilion, and he’s blaming New York’s SAFE Act restrictions on assault weapons. “It can’t be good,” said Fran Madore, president of United Mine Workers Local 717, which represents 1,180 of the 1,300 Remington employees in Ilion. “How can it be good?”

at those who ignored this warning in 2012

“Mandating firearms micro- stamping will restrict the ability of Remington to expand business in the Empire State,” company chief strategy officer Stephen Jackson Jr. wrote to Cuomo. “Worse yet, Remington could be forced to reconsider its commitment to the New York market altogether rather than spend the astronomical sums of money needed to completely reconfigure our manufacturing and assembly processes.” Jackson insisted that law enforcement, gun retailers and “law-abiding consumers throughout New York — if not the entire country” would be directly affected. Senate bill sponsor Jose Peralta dismissed Remingtons warning as “just another tactic being used to try and block microstamping, which is supported by many crime-fighters.”

which came true:

The report said Alabama’s reputation as a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights was a factor in the decision.

As Larry Keane put it:

Now it’s true, Remington hasn’t moved their current jobs in NY, but once there is a brand new plant operating in Alabama it won’t be very hard for do so, will it?

But it’s no big deal who needs those Pro-Gun conservatives in NY Anyway,  plus you don’t want the people of NY to become job locked do you?

There were three seemingly unrelated stories that I saw this week that perfectly captured not only how our liberal friends view religion but of liberalism itself.

Then they spat in his face and struck him, while some slapped him, saying, “Prophesy for us, Messiah: who is it that struck you?”

Matthew 26:67-68

The first came out of Lincoln Nebraska, as you might have heard a group of Satanists is suing have a statue of Satan put next to a 10 commandments monument on public ground, however that statue isn’t the part of the story that I found interesting.

Following the ACLU’s lead, several other groups requested to erect monuments, including a Hindu group, an animal-rights organization, and the pastafarian Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

That the ACLU & Satanists want a Christian monument removed is not news. That other groups & religions are jumping on the bandwagon isn’t either, but that the State of Nebraska might even consider a request from the “pastafarian” church is simply insulting.

For those of you not familiar “pastafarians” are basally a parody church that worships the “flying spaghetti monster”. It exists to parody religion in general and Christianity in particular in order to advance a secular world view.

Now Christianity will hit it’s 2000th anniversary in a couple of decades and God has been around from day one, and with hundreds of thousands of Christians being slaughtered yearly solely for their beliefs a bunch of secularists making fun of us by pretending to worship pasta is a small thing but the key word here is PRETENDING.

As entire point of their “religion” is that their “god” is not real (which is the point they are attempting to make about God itself) you essentially have a group of people publicly espousing something they know to be, in fact false.

Given the #1 issue for election 2014 that that actually sounds vaguely familiar

Flavius: You are barbarians indeed not to know of Flavius Maximus. For seven years, I was the most successful gladiator in this province.
Capt. Kirk: Then you heard the word of the sun?
FLavius: Yes. The words of peace and freedom. It wasn’t easy for me to believe. I was trained to fight. But the words, the words are true.

Star Trek: Bread and Circuses 1968

The 2nd story came out of Morning Joe on Friday.  Congressman Keith Ellison (D-Minnesota) was talking about his new book “My Country ‘Tis of Thee: My Faith, My Family, Our Future.” I was aware of course that Ellison was the 1st Muslim member of congress but I wasn’t aware that he went to Catholic Schools and converted and that conversion story from the interview is what caught my ear.

Here is the key exchange:

Joe Scarborough: So what moved you about Islam specifically to convert from being a Catholic, that’s an obviously bold move at 19, what was it about the faith itself that moved you?

Congressman Ellison: Well part of it is what I didn’t know about Catholicism even though I went to Catholic school but other part of it was the social justice aspect, the ah inclusion, the stories about how we in Islam we affirmatively stand against racial division and embrace racial inclusion and so some of these stories I thought were really intriguing and plus you know there is a kernel of all faiths which is that faith should be a bridge not a wall it should unite you and connect you and not divide you or separate you…

There is a critical piece missing from this story, that CS Lewis addressed

we do want, and want very much, to make men treat Christianity as a means; preferably, of course, as a means to their own advancement, but, failing that—as a means to anything—even to social justice. The thing to do is to get a man at first to value social justice as a thing which the Enemy demands, and then work him on to the stage at which he values Christianity because it may produce social justice. For the Enemy will not be used as a convenience.

Ellison left Christianity in general & Catholicism in particular for Islam because of the various tenants of liberalism, social justice, inclusion, bridges not walls but notice what isn’t there C.S Lewis again.

Believe this, not because it’s true, but for some other reason.

It’s quite telling that in all the reason he gave for his conversion to Islam, “Because it’s true” wasn’t among them.

The final story is something we already wrote about, Governor Andrew Cuomo’s attack on those who dare to oppose gay marriage or abortion.  As this post is already nearing 900 words I won’t repeat the contents of that post but I will excerpt Katherine Jean Lopez   masterpiece on the subject nothing the precedent of Mr. Cuomo’s father Mario

Look how far we have come since 1984. On Sept. 13 of that year, another Governor Cuomo, Andrew’s father, Mario, famously laid out his contention that being personally opposed to abortion – the taking of innocent human life – and being a public advocate for its legality and subsequent policy accommodations was an morally sound position for a Catholic in politics. Now we’ve moved away from pretending his is a coherent and theologically acceptable position. As we enter the week of the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision 41 years ago Wednesday, Andrew Cuomo explains that the only acceptable public position in the state of New York is to support legal abortion — and, based on his agenda, its expansion.

But the true irony is this:

Andrew Cuomo is a professed Catholic proclaiming the Gospel of secularism.

The word “professed” is key here.  Like a lot of supposedly Catholic colleges who profess the faith for elderly donors & alumnus not paying Gov Cuomo finds his faith a coat, to be worn when it’s profession has political values and to be shed if it becomes too hot.

That’s the thing about belief, when you actually believe something you act accordingly but when you don’t you are Al Gore on a private Jet, all concerned about Global warning, but not so concerned to telecommute via video or fly commercial.

So Pilate said to him, “Then you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say I am a king. 16 For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.

Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”

John 18:37-38a

All three of these examples concerning faith have a single thing in common:  The rejection as Truth as the basis for religion and or action.

The Pastafarians knowingly profess a religion and the existence of a creature that they know is untrue, Congressman Ellison rejects Catholicism for Islam not because the Catholic Faith is false & Islam is true, but because of the social aspect that it confirmed for him.  Andrew Cuomo professes Catholicism while stating Orthodox catholic belief makes one extreme and unacceptable to the state, a public statement that can not be made if one’s profession of Catholicism is true.

And this is the common theme in liberalism as well, Republicans have a war on Women, but Bill Clinton, Bob Filner, Anthony Wiener and Carlos Henriquez have no reflection on the party.  A warm summer is a certain sign of global warming that we must change our entire economy over, but when a Global warming scientist’s ship gets stuck in the ice in the middle of the Antarctic summer, that means nothing.   A president says for 4 years the following:

And when it turns out to be false, it doesn’t mean a thing to the left which continues to push Obamacare as if it was the great thing ever done.

I have stated that modern liberalism & progressive is diametrically opposed to and actively targeting Christianity because it is all about truth and reality and rejecting truth and reality is the cornerstone that modern liberalism is built upon.

Christianity on the other hand is built upon a single truth:  Jesus Christ is the Son of God.  and he teaches that if you accept this truth you might have a hard time of it.

If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you. Remember the word I spoke to you, ‘No slave is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. And they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me.   John 15:18-21

If you choose to reject it, on the net people will celebrate and complement you, on television people will lionize you and if you have desire for higher office you will not only be celebrated by the political left but the media and popular culture will lionize and fete you till your dying day…

…after that, you’re on our own.

And remember there is a difference between rejecting something utterly and not knowing or being sure.  Just keep searching for truth  or as the Pope puts keep Honestly searching for the Lord, you’ll find him.

Good luck.

There has been some confusion and consternation concerning the statements of Governor Andrew Cuomo concerning pro-life, pro-family and pro-second Amendment people in NY. Reading his statements one might assume that he would, for example, decide that Pope Francis I having called abortion “Horrific” would not be welcome in either NYC or the state in general. It would, of course go without saying that Cardinal Timothy Dolan should pack his bags along with any faithful Catholic who follows the church teachings.

But I think it might be prudent to run the governor’s words through a translation circuit before jumping to conclusions, therefore using the most advanced piece of computational material that I have direct access to let me provide you with my translation of the Governor’s statement:

I am a candidate for the Democrat nomination for president in 2016 so if you are a progressive with a lot of money or a gay activist with a lot of money or Michael Bloomberg you want to support me and write me checks instead of that Clinton family who believes that Abortion should be rare, that supported and passed DOMA and comes from a state that embraces the gun culture.

Since we pro-life types are not welcome in NY anymore it might behoove us to use some kind of identification so that state officials can mark us undesirables if we enter or pass through the state. I understand the symbol to the right was quite popular not a very long time ago for that very purpose. juden

But as this is the 21st century rather than the 20th and the a different group is more identified with the extreme doctrines of marriage being a union of a man and a woman and the concept that human life begins at conception and must be protected that so offend the governor perhaps a different symbol might be more in keeping with 21st century realities.  For example this one.

The advantage of this badge twofold.  Not only does it mark those who profess an extreme ideological on marriage & abortion but it doubles as a handy reminder of what happens if you preach unacceptable religious doctrines contrary to what the state considers the public good.

I don’t know why but I have the oddest feeling that if the governor of NY suggests the mandatory wearing of this badge by those who oppose Gay Marriage and abortion that it would not only delight the very people he wishes to support his 2016 presidential campaign but that the people he wishes to mark might in fact willingly and proudly wear such a symbol on their person to publicly associate themselves with the gentleman in question.

Exit question: As Pastor Kelly in his piece yesterday on Martin Luther King birthday noted :

Pastor King was a Christian of Orthodox beliefs , and a Baptist minister who argued in the “public square” on the basis of Biblically based values.

we can assume that Gov Cuomo would declare him persona non grata in his state? It would certainly be in keeping with democrat party history.

Update:  For some reason this jumped into my head

Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father.  But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father.  Matthew 10:32-33

I can’t imagine why.

Update 2:  This comment at Instapundit jumped out at me: (emphasis mine)

Seconding Andy Fox, I just sent a note through the governor’s website that my family will not be visiting New York while Mr. Cuomo is governor, absent a complete retraction and apology — should have insisted on “sensitivity training” as well, but I didn’t think of it.

Guess we’ll find out how much pull Andy Cuomo’s people have with the IRS!

Would it not be possible for any state employee who is either 1.  Pro 2nd Amendment, 2.  Pro-Life 3.  Pro-Marriage or simply a faithful Catholic to lodge a complaint against the governor for creating a “hostile work environment”?

Update 3: Empire state, Totalitarian State same thing right?

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has decreed that (just like Barack Obama) his job is not to work for his entire constituency. Cuomo believes that it his job to advance the agenda of the radical far left only, and that anyone who does not completely agree with him is not welcome in New York State AT ALL.

Star Trek: Friday’s Child 1967

I keep hearing on Morning Joe how Andrew Cuomo is making NY more business friendly. I’m having trouble reconciling that with this story out of NY:

The $2 billion income tax increase isn’t due to expire until 2014, but that’s an election year. The proposal being considered in closed-door talks was first revealed last week by The Associated Press citing officials close to the talks who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to divulge the effort.

Hold on a minute. A $2,000,000,000 income tax increase? That can’t be so. This is the state of Andrew Cuomo, the model of making NY business friendly, famed Conservative Joe Scarborough said so. He certainly doesn’t have his fingerprints on this …

On Sunday night, Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos said extending the income tax on millionaires is Cuomo’s idea.

…ok maybe he DOES but apparently I’m looking at this the wrong way. this isn’t really a tax increase, it’s a TAX CUT.

Cuomo then passed a supposedly temporary tax on high-earning New Yorkers that was due to end next year, but now, CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer reported Thursday, that’s not going to happen.

“There will be an extension of the surcharge set to expire next year,” Cuomo said Thursday.

And when asked at if that wasn’t hypocritical, given his prior no-new-taxes positions, Cuomo tried to paint the tax hike as a tax cut, since the budget also provides the middle class with a $350 child tax rebate.

“Some taxes go up, yes, and others go down and the net is they go down. That’s why it’s a tax cut,” Cuomo said.

Let me get this straight, if I have a supermarket and I raise the price on meat if I drop the price on cookies I can call the prince increase on meat a price drop because cookies cost less? Are New Yorkers really falling for this?

I’m going to give the last word to Chris Christie who said this about democrats and tax increases last year on the campaign trail:

“35 years ago we didn’t have an income tax in NJ no income tax like right here in NH, we had no income tax and Governor Brendon Byrne, a democrat said: If you just give me a small income tax, a little one, I will lower your property taxes, we had the highest property taxes in America back in 1977 so 35 years later, what have we got? We’ve STILL got the highest property taxes in America and the income tax that started at 2% under governor Byrne is now 9%”

Anyone who believes or says he believes a temporary tax hike proposed by a democrat is actually temporary is either a fool or a con man.

Hey lets elect this Cuomo guy president!

Update: Of course you have a much better chance of lower taxes if you are bringing a certain television show that they governor likes.

The Twilight Zone The Hunt 1962

Yesterday I was reading the Anchoress’ piece on Andrew Cuomo and the link to Deacon Greg. I found it extremely depressing but for reasons you might not suspect.

Not for the concept of the new abortion regulations, I’m resigned to democrats pushing for such things.

Not for the potential slaughter, The current slaughter is already depressing and frankly the world is full of slaughter from Africa to China to Mexico to Chicago, there is never a shortage of innocents murdered to be upset about.

Not even for the cheers as he made the proposition. I’m into history, the idea of a mob cheering evil as if it’s good has a long and distinguished pedigree.

No what depresses me about Andrew Cuomo is the same thing that depresses me about the Monsignor Kevin Wallin story.

They both knew better or at least should have.

It’s not like they have the youth of a Lindsay Lohan or a Amanda Bynes to explain their behavior, or the ignorance of many of those born in the last few decades who have never been taught differently or exposed to the word and came of age in a culture that mocks it at every turn.

Andrew Cuomo was born in 1955 eight years before me, His father Mario was born in 1932 11 years after my own. Both were raised Catholic, Andrew being sent to a Catholic High School. Both have been clearly taught the precepts of the Church and of Christ. Being Italian Catholics it is impossible they did not have one or move strongly devout relatives or in Mario’s case devout parents who set an example of faith and what it means.

Likewise Wallin at 61 not only came to age in a different era but as a Catholic priest would have had formal training and teaching in the Gospels, in the faith. These are not things that would be abstract to him, these would be things that would be understood.

Additionally both Cuomo’s and the former Monsignor (he left the church in 2011) by virtue of their place in society would have direct access to superiors in the faith, people of vast knowledge and understanding able to give them advice and guidance, access that an average Catholic simply doesn’t.

Yet they have discarded it like the wrapping of a gift at Christmas.  Tossed it for pride in the case of Cuomo, lust in the case of Wallin and greed in the case of both.

The question is why?

Well the easy answer, the one that is most comfortable and least challenging is simple human weakness. These are sins, all people are vulnerable to sin. It is tempting to look at Mr. Cuomo and Msgr Wallin and say to ourselves: “They have given into sin, we are all sinners so rather than critique we should simply pray for them”, Indeed we should pray for them, but that answer while comforting to us permits us to ignore a most uncomfortable reality.

Both Mr. Cuomo and Msgr Wallin are intelligent and educated men. At ages 55 & 61 they both understand they at the very least a decade closer to death than to birth and like all of us are marching relentlessly toward it. This being the case, what do their choices tell us?

They tell us when it comes to Christ, they simply don’t buy it.

They don’t buy God, they don’t buy Christ, they don’t buy the idea of heaven and hell and they certainly don’t buy these words from the Gospel:

Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many. How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few. “ Matt 7:13-14

They simply see the world in front of them as the only end and a supposed faith as a means to those ends. As Elizabeth Scalia bluntly put it concerning NY’s Governor:

“Yeah, well, he’s not seeking heaven, just now,” I shrugged. “He’s seeking the White House, and power.”

Of course he’s not seeking heaven Elizabeth, he doesn’t believe it’s there! For such a person Mass is a formality for electoral purposes or more likely a comfortable habit akin to Sheldon Cooper knocking on a door three times.

As I said on the air on the Money Matters Radio Network in my first broadcast as a guest host yesterday. The only reason to be Christian in general and Catholic in particular is because it’s true. If it’s not true the we are an Elk’s club that meets on Sundays and the rules of morality that take away from your wealth or comfort are the rules of fools and no amount of belief will make it otherwise. If it’s not true I’m a sucker for not walking across the bridge to Water street and buying every EBT card I can for .50 on the dollar and doubling my available grocery money in seconds.

But the converse is also true. If Jesus Christ is the Son of God, if the Gospel is the word of God, if the bread and wine are transformed at the altar into the body and blood of Christ and if heaven and hell exist, then no amount of disbelief, doubt or laughter will change it.

The tragedy of Andrew Cuomo and of Kevin Wallin is not solely in what they have done and choose to do driven by either the lust for power, sex, money or even drug addiction in Wallin’s case.

The tragedy of their actions is they knew better and were taught better and are intelligent enough to understand better, yet are still walking toward the open-pit. Watching them walk toward it is like watching a Lindsay Lohan or a Amanda Bynes self destruct. It’s a waste, it bothers me, it doesn’t have to happen.

But Andrew Cuomo and Kevin Wallin have one thing going for them, one card still in play:

And he told them this parable: “There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard, and when he came in search of fruit on it but found none, he said to the gardener, ‘For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none. (So) cut it down. Why should it exhaust the soil?’

He said to him in reply, ‘Sir, leave it for this year also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it;it may bear fruit in the future. If not you can cut it down.'” Luke 13:6-9

Cuomo, Wallin, myself and anyone who is reading this still has that one vital ingredient to avoid the pit in front of us.  We are still alive.  I’ll do my best to steer clear of it, you do the same and I hope and pray that Mr. Cuomo and Wallin do too.  They have the rest of their lives to do so….

…after that, they’re on their own.
