This morning during the 2nd hour of Morning Joe blogger Tina Brown (yes Newsweek is pretty much a blog now) came on and it was the Hillary Clinton hour all about how Clinton was so awesome so destined and so great.

It was so ridiculous that Byron York tweeted the following

And then less that 30 minutes the word of Margaret Thatcher’s death breaks.

Suddenly Morning Joe becomes all Thatcher.

Suddenly instead of the phony accomplishments of Hillary Clinton (does she have actual accomplishments?) we are talking Thatcher.

Suddenly instead of propping up a woman whose power and “success” is based totally on pity we talk about a woman whose success is based on turning her country around.

Suddenly instead of pushing a woman whose record needs to be papered over ignoring Benghazi, Egypt, Libya & Chris Stephens , they are forced to talk about a woman who a who led a country through tough economic times, won a war in the Falklands and was one of the three people along with Reagan and Pope John Paul II instrumental in the fall of the Soviet Union.

Suddenly instead of pushing no labels they are celebrating a woman who was all about no compromise.

Think for one second if Bill Clinton didn’t exist nobody would know who Hillary Clinton is, but how many people actually know Margaret Thatcher’s husband’s name? I’d have to look it up.

Thatcher was 87 and her death isn’t a big surprise but as I see Morning Joe forced to go all Thatcher all the time I have to think that God has a perfect sense of timing.

Update: Hotair covers and Legal Insurrection comment.

Update 2:
JWF and twitchy notes some less than generous comments.

Update 3: Lady Liberty 1885 has a nice link around.

Update 4: My kids never heard Thatcher in person but Stacy McCain’s Daughter did.

Olimometer 2.52

It’s Monday the $300 paycheck stands waiting to be filled.   Can we fill it today so I won’t have to worry about it on my 25th anniversary tomorrow?

Up to you.

Max Bialystock: The two cardinal rules of producing. One: Never put your own money in the show.

Leo Bloom: And two?

Max Bialystock:  Never put your own money in the show!

The Producers 2005

In both versions of The Producers and in the Broadway play. Max Bialystock raises money for his plays by diving into “little old lady land”

This came to mind when I saw this story at Politico:

Amid speculation that Hillary Clinton might make a run for the presidency in 2016, her husband is taking another swing at shrinking her lingering 2008 campaign debt, which totals $73,000 as of Sept. 30.

In an email to supporters Wednesday, Bill Clinton offered a chance to spend a day with him if donors chipped in to drive down his wife’s campaign debt before Dec. 6.

That Hillary might still have campaign debt 4 years after the race was not a big surprise, as the article says it was as high as 25 Million at one point, but what really struck me was the figure that is left after four years.

$73,000

Now for me and you $73,000 is a lot of money.  If I had $73,000 more that I do now it would have a dramatic effect on my life and prospects, but Bill Clinton?

That thought seems to be a general theme in comments at Politico this one is typical:

$73,000??? Honestly, doesn’t Bill earn something like $100,000/speech. Maybe he could sign up for one more gig and pay the bill himself – or possibly Hillary could earn a few shekels now that she’s retiring.

That is the big difference between Bill Clinton and the fictional Max Bialystock.  Max was wearing a cardboard belt and needed to dive into little old lady land to do anything.  Bill Clinton turned his political career into a vast fortune. He could pay this debt off with no effort, his welcoming ladies young and old into presidential kneepad land is likely purely recreational. This fact obscures an overriding truth about the Bill Clinton way.

Yes it’s true Bill Clinton can retire this debt himself if he chooses to, but why would he choose to? As long as there are democrat donors willing to spend their money why would he ever think about paying this himself?

This not only makes him the perfect patron saint for the Democrat party but would make him an excellent Hollywood or Broadway producer.

There has been a lot of back and forth about “Will Barack Obama Throw Hillary under the Bus over Benghazi?” or vice-versa this week .

It was quite a situation, If Obama threw Hillary under the bus would the Clintons work subrosa against him? (I maintain they already have been.)  If Hillary threw Obama under the bus  would the African-American community make her pay in 2016, it’s one thing for them to be pissed off at Obama, it’s quite another for some white lady to beat up on him.

What do you do? Well Hillary has threaded the needle in a way that accomplishes everything she needed to thus.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Monday tried to douse a political firestorm around the deadly assault on a U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya, saying she is responsible for the security of American diplomatic outposts.

“I take responsibility” for the protection of U.S. diplomats, Clinton said during a visit to Peru. But she said an investigation now under way will ultimately determine what happened in the attack that left four Americans dead.

The moment I heard this I had one thought: This is the move of a political master. Consider what this accomplishes:

Seemingly:

It is a statesman like move, going forward and not ducking responsibility in a way nobody has been willing to do.

In Reality:

It covers her, by taking responsibility it heads off all kinds of stories that might come up with a theme of finding fault. Why should congress investigate to pin blame when it’s already been accepted?

Seemingly:

It supports the president, by taking the blame she shields the first Black president both showing herself a good soldier to the party and most importantly to the black community.

In Reality:

It undermines Obama by making her look strong, and him look weak. He is now forced to make some kind of statement second as a response. It’s the 3 AM phone call with her answering while he goes to Vegas.

Seemingly:

It ends press coverage on what the Obama Administration should do next, blame assigned move on.

In Reality:

It doesn’t end coverage it changes it.  What will the president do about this?  It puts Obama in a box.  Blame is assigned so what is the punishment?   If Hillary is responsible does he ask for her resignation, does he fire her? With his electoral prospects already sinking he dare not do either, and God help him if she resigns on her own. It would be another example of her acting while he is paralyzed.  It is the final act of Carterization of the president.

Seemingly:

It makes her vulnerable as every commentator on the right calls for her head in the hope of embarrassing Obama and taking her down a peg.

In Reality:

It gets her in good with the base of her party.  I can see the fundraising e-mails now.  “She’s taken responsibility and those nasty right wingers are piling on”  This will coin money for her.  That doesn’t even take into account how the press will react.

Seemingly:

It hurts  her 2016 election prospects after all she is responsible for an attack on the US on the Anniversary of 9/11 no less.

In Reality:

Not only does this make her look presidential (Expect comparisons to JFK’s Bay of Pigs speech from the MSM)  but it neutralizes her primary opponents on the subject, in fact for the second time in twelve years she will be able to paint herself as the victim of the irresponsibility of a man who should have known better.

Seemingly:

It hands President Romney a ready-made issue in 2016 to use.

In Reality:

It puts Romney in a box.  Every president has foreign policy failures and Mitt will have his share.  Imagine the debate  answer: “President Romney is right.  I was secretary of state during the Benghazi debacle and I took full responsibility for it.  What I would like to know is when the president will take responsibility for (insert relevant issue here)”.  It  will put and keep Mitt on the defensive.

The Bottom line is forgetting all the national security and moral issues involved. Hillary has done the thing that most helps her in the long run while all the time managing to undermine her foes on both the left and the right in one fell swoop.

That doesn’t mean it wasn’t the right thing to do, it IS but as usual the right thing is generally the smart thing and this was the smartest thing anyone in this administration has done in a while.

This story may continue, but in terms of its negative impact there will be little if any on Hillary Clinton from this point on.

Simply amazing.

Update: Stacy Smithy gets it:

Why am I not a Presidential candidate? Because if I was Mitt, I’d be all: “I’d like to congratulate the President on his choice of Secretary of State. After the better part of four years, somebody in the Administration finally took responsibility the way leaders do, on one of those hopefully rare occasions when it involves confessing a shortcoming. In this case, one that involved the butchery of four Americans. Hopefully this President isn’t too old to learn something from all this. Better leaders plan so as to minimize these sorts of tragedies. Lesser men play the Casablanca card and locate a usual suspects for a round-up. How is Nakoula doing these days, Mr. President?”

Update 2: On Morning Joe Hillary Clinton compared to JFK. Think about it, in under 12 hours Hillary goes from: “The person responsible for a disaster” to JFK saying “defeat is an orphan”.

Today is day one of campaign 2016.

Update 3: Captain Ed Morrissey (he will always be Captain Ed to me) NAILS it:

It’s a jaw-dropping display of a leadership vacuum, which Hillary ended up having to fill herself. This is exactly what Hillary warned voters about in 2008. The contrast between her moment of leadership in this crisis and Obama’s lack of leadership since the very beginning of it will not help Obama make the case for another four years of buck-passing at the top, not even when Obama showed leadership on the Nicki Minaj-Mariah Carey feud.

And Stacy McCain spots an oversight on my part:

Corrected and noted.

We have been told over and over again that the Obama campaign is doing well in the swing states, that Romney/Ryan has no traction. That the election is Obama’s to win or lose.

If this is true can you explain why at a small bakery in Virgina the Vice president was turned down.

“Crumb and Get It” is a mom and pop store. Literally. Chris and his wife Kelly run the place and need all the business they can get.

McMurray said the Vice President’s entourage got to the point and made its pitch.

“She said they have selected ‘Crumb and Get It” to be his stop on his way to Blacksburg and was wondering if that was ok.”

Here’s the part that might make other business owners crazy.

“This is an opportunity of a lifetime but essentially I said ‘No offense to you or the campaign but I just decline you guys coming in here. At that time she said ‘Are you sure? There’s going to be a lot of press, a lot of activity,’” McMurray said.

Why in the world would a new business owner say “no” to a photo op with the Vice President of the United States?

McMurray said it was President Obama’s recent remarks about small business and who built what.

“Very simply, ‘you didn’t build that’” McMurray said. “Speaking of small businesses and entrepreneurs all across this country and actually last night my wife was up all night. No sleep, she’s worked a full 24 hours.”

Listen any small business would LOVE to have that kind of publicity, but this guy decided that the trip of the sitting VP of the US was not worth it.

Folks, bottom line: this doesn’t happen if your side is winning.

And there are the crowds, have you seen the crowds? Robert Stacy McCain is in Ohio and sees them clearly

While we were at Skyline, our waitress explained that she had not been scheduled to work that day. She had come by the restaurant to check her schedule and the manager — swamped by the influx of patrons after the Ryan rally — asked her to help out.

“I’ve never seen so many Republicans in my life!” the waitress said of the afternoon crowd. I explained to her that it was probably due to Ryan’s endorsement of the “Five Way,” and told her this surge of business was “the start of the Romney-Ryan recovery.”

He has more in the Spectator and you should read it.

Folks, bottom line: This isn’t the sign of a pick that’s failing

and then there is the Hillary talk…

President Barack Obama has slightly more than 22 days to drop Vice Presidential Joe Biden from the 2012 Democratic presidential ticket, according to lawyers familiar with the party nominating process. That is, Democrats have until September 6 to formally nominate their presidential ticket which will then be qualified for the 50 state ballots.

This involves 2 different questions and they should be addressed independently:

I don’t believe that president Obama will drop Joe Biden or that he will “suddenly” develop a need to leave the ticket but the very fact that this is being discussed seriously shows the weakness of this campaign and the need for a “game changer”.

This is something the left and the democrats can not do without admitting failure and desperation but this whole public conversation is conducive to panic.

But let’s for the sake of argument say the party has decided they need a big roll of the dice and dropping He Biden is it. This begs the 2nd question Would Hillary Clinton take the job? The answer is NO.

Hillary Clinton can count, she knows where this election is going and a defeat on the ticket with Obama will not only stain her with the that failure but will link a Clinton campaign to Obama. She doesn’t want to base her campaign in 2016 to be linked to Obama. She wants to run as the return of the Clinton presidency.

Hillary Clinton knows the problem for the Democrats & the left is not the bottom of the ticket, it’s the top and that’s why Republicans should do this:

“Ride right through them, they’re demoralized as hell”!

Mrs. Clinton can see the writing on the wall and the size of the crowds. When the disaster strikes in 2012 she doesn’t want to be associated with it in any way.

Update: I didn’t know Obamacare covered spin doctoring.

Today, they added a deceptively edited video [a la Andrea Mitchell] to substantiate their lie:

However, it cuts out the rest of Romney’s comments, mid-sentence. Here’s the transcript via Action 2 News:

Actually, Paul Ryan and my plan for Medicare, I think, is the same if not identical–it’s probably close to identical. Our plan is for people 55 years of age and older. There’s no change. The only change I’d mention for 55 or older is we’d restore the $817 billion President Obama took out of the Medicare trust fund.

You don’t play this game when you are winning.

Update 2: According to Ed Klein the offer to replace Biden came up two weeks ago, here was Hillary’s answer

“She felt that if she were on the ticket with Obama and he lost, she would be tarred as a loser when she tried to run in 2016,” Klein said. “On the other hand, if she was on the ticket and he won, and he continued his far left-wing socialistic policies, she’d have to defend those policies when she ran in 2016.”

Even Bill couldn’t talk her into it, proving once and for all she is smarter that he is.

The Silly season is upon us as these story prove:

Item: I’m too sexy for this paper.

I know that different people find different things suggestive but C’Mon guys

When Women’s Wear Daily consulted a coterie of photo editors and designers about why the image is “destined to be one for the history books,” Clinton was foremost in their responses.

“The Hillary Clinton expression is the one that holds the photograph fully,” Time’s photo director told the magazine. “You can see 10 years of tension and heartache and anger in Hillary’s face,” Conde Nast’s Scott Dadich agreed.

Turns out she was probably just coughing during that crucial moment captured by White House photographer Pete Souza. But nevertheless, the image still proved a bit too racy for at least one of the many newspapers that printed it.

That would be the Ultra-Orthodox Hasidic broadsheet Der Tzitung, published in Brooklyn. The paper photoshopped Clinton, as well at the only other woman who could be seen in the room–Audrey Tomason, the national director of counterterrorism–out of the frame.

Far be it from me to laugh at someone’s religious beliefs but the idea that the image of Hillary Clinton’s would violate the “laws of modesty” is what you would call an automatic script generator for comics all over the country.

Item: Bristol Bristol Bristol

I don’t have much use for people with Palin Derangement Syndrome, I also have slightly less use for members of a Palin cult, but the idea that their might be an audience for a Bristol Palin reality show is scary:

The 20-year-old daughter of Sarah Palin is moving in with fellow “Dancing with the Stars” season 11 alumnus Kyle Massey, 19, and his brother Chris, 21, for a reality show following the controversial single mom as she works at a small charity.

And Biography channel is drawn to this show?

“Bristol is the kind of personality BIO is drawn to,” McKillop said in a statement. “Her personal life has been playing out in the media for several years but this will be the first time she’s opening up her real life, with her son and her friends the Massey Brothers.“

They are drawn to a single mother living with two guys while working for a charity? ARRUGH!

There was a time when the words “Bristol Fashion” signaled quality. I don’t think that’s the word I’d use here.

Item: Good evening I’m the dish of the day:

How many levels of wrong are there with this story:

A CANNIBAL has been arrested after his “dinner guest” changed his mind and called the cops.

The would-be victim from Switzerland answered an internet advert from the 43-year-old man seeking someone who would agree to be killed, cooked and eaten

Think about it, who answers an ad volunteering to be slaughtered and eaten? This is the ultimate expression of the Darwin awards.

Exit question, if this took place in a country that allows assisted suicide would this be illegal?

Says Mrs. Clinton. Michael Totten who apparently knows more about Syria than anyone in the administration is picking his jaw up from the floor:

He’s actually a totalitarian state sponsor of terrorism with American, Israeli, Lebanese, Iraqi, and Syrian blood on his hands. And some of that Syrian blood is still warm on the streets.

and as Gateway pundit reminds us:

And, don’t forget that for years this “reformer” Assad allowed terrorists on his soil who had been moving, arming, and funding foreign jihadists traveling through Syria into Iraq in cooperation with al-Qaeda leader Abu Musab al Zarqawi.

The actual difference is that one is an Iranian satellite who’s opposed us in Iraq and the other gave in to us when it came to WMD after Iraq fell.

Of course as Israel matzav writes it could be a question of fear:

Though no one is yet talking about a no-fly zone over Syria, Obama administration officials acknowledge the parallels to Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi. Some analysts predicted the administration will be cautious in pressing Mr. Assad, not because of any allegiance to him but out of a fear of what could follow him — a Sunni-led government potentially more radical and Islamist than his Alawite minority government.

Frankly we aren’t in a position to intervene in Syria even if we want to, but why not simply be ambiguous? Just say: “All options are on the table.” Make Syria and Iran sweat? Make Assard think he has to give concessions?

This is what comes of judging based on what others want than our own national interest. 2012 can’t come fast enough.

Did Mrs. Clinton actually draw an equivalence between the shooting of Arizona and “extremists” in Islam?

Ok Mrs. Clinton other than Fred Phelps who is not supported by any group within the country.

Meanwhile in Pakistan this is what happens when you shoot the governor of a province.

Cheering crowds have gathered in recent days to support the assassin who riddled the governor of Punjab with 26 bullets and to praise his attack — carried out in the name of the Prophet Muhammad — as an act of heroism. To the surprise of many, chief among them have been Pakistan’s young lawyers, once seen as a force for democracy.

Their energetic campaign on behalf of the killer has caught the government flat-footed and dismayed friends and supporters of the slain politician, Salman Taseer, an outspoken proponent of liberalism who had challenged the nation’s strict blasphemy laws. It has also confused many in the broader public and observers abroad, who expected to see a firm state prosecution of the assassin.

Yeah lone shooter who has a history of issues vs groups of lawyers and newspapers supporting political murder, yep it’s exactly the same.

If Mrs. Clinton isn’t ashamed she ought to be.

The “official” story as to why Biden was chosen for VP was that Michelle Obama didn’t want Hillery Clinton on the ticket and thanks to John McCain’s implosion (despite Sarah Palin’s best efforts) it turns out she wasn’t needed.

Now the talk is again of putting Clinton on the ticket in 2012 and Glenn Reynolds gives three reasons against. Can anyone explain why #3 would have been any less valid in 2008.

3. If Hillary is going to be one heartbeat away from the Oval Office, would you want that to be your heartbeat?

I got no answer to that one.
