John Quincy Adams

“But she goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy.”
John Quincy Adams on America.

The United States has survived a Civil War and two world wars, and the Cold War.

But can it survive Russian bots? And a search for “monsters.”

Thirteen Russians were indicted on Friday–none were arrested because they don’t live here–for interfering in the 2016 presidential election by acting as “trolls” from St. Petersburg. These “bots” utilized Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to stir up controversy and discord. The group that the accused were associated with was appropriately known as “the Troll Farm.” The scheme was hatched in 2013, a year before Donald Trump declared his candidacy for president, which you’ll recall was initially viewed by nearly everyone as a sideshow and a stage for the real estate mogul to promote his businesses and his Celebrity Apprentice television franchise.

Last spring Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced his appointment of former FBI director Robert Mueller as the special prosecutor on alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia to investigate “any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump; and…any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation.”

The Troll Farm issued such click-baity stories like this one, which I recall seeing, “Hillary Clinton has already committed voter fraud during the Democrat Iowa Caucus.”

As with the indictments of former Trump campaign officials Paul Manafort, who briefly was Trump’s campaign manager, and Rick Gates, none of this has anything to do with so-called Russian collusion between Trump World and Russia. The same can be said of the plea deals between former White House National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and low-lever staffer George Papadopolous. These four men clearly fall under “any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation,” The last two pleaded guilty to lying to federal officials but not colluding with Russia. The first two have been charged for actions that predate Trump’s presidential run.

Which led the president to remark on Twitter a few hours ago, “I never said Russia did not meddle in the election, I said ‘it may be Russia, or China or another country or group, or it may be a 400 pound genius sitting in bed and playing with his computer.’ The Russian ‘hoax’ was that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia – it never did!”

So far Rosenstein, remember he’s the man who appointed Mueller as special prosecutor, agrees.

“There is no allegation that any American is a knowing participant,” Rosenstein said when announcing the indictments of the 13 Russians. “There is no allegation that the charge altered the outcome of the 2016 election.”

And the search for “monsters,” Trump calls it a witch hunt, goes on. While Mueller seems to be on to something with the bots, where was Barack Obama when the Troll Farm broke ground during his presidency? Obama famously and wrongly ridiculed Mitt Romney for calling Russia “our number one geopolitical foe” in a debate. Shortly before leaving office, Obama did tell Vladimir Putin, “cut it out.”

All the same, America will survive the bots.

The last two days I did something I haven’t done in a long time. I kept my eye on twitter and was there when CNN first tweeted out that Mueller has filed charges against someone.

That CNN which is fighting with MSNBC to be THE anti-Trump network and which apparently has connections to Fusion GPS that they didn’t bother to disclose was the recipient of this latest leak from Mueller’s team of Democrats was one of the few unsurprising things about it.

First there’s was the surprise of an indictment at all. I’m old enough to have sat through a lot of these things and I don’t recall any special counsel managing an indictment a mere 9 months or less after being appointed.

Second of all there is the surprise of such an announcement taking place of a Friday evening inviting speculation for days. Normally a law enforcement matter like this takes place quickly in order to keep the target of such an act from being able to prepare whoever the target is has been given several days of not being charged to take legal measures in their advantage. That seems odd to me.

Third of all is something that I have to give Andrew Breitbart’s arch nemesis Eric Boehlert credit for noticing the NYT has not touched this story at all. They didn’t touch it the day it broke

Nor have they done so as of this writing: (Sunday 9:42 am)

That the times, which is in the middle of its “Trump Bump”, would leave this story alone to leave their anti-trump audience to go elsewhere is simply amazing.

But for me the biggest surprise is how the left has received it. To wit Jake Tapper put out this tweet…

…implying that the revelations concerning Mueller and Uranium One were a dodge to counter this (rather than the obvious conclusion that this sudden indictment and it’s timing was all about changing the subject BY him). It produced a series of replies from the Never Trump faithful that can only be described as orgasmic. Harvey Weinstein wasn’t as excited in the presence of women as the Twitter left are over this news.

I find this surprising because we’ve seen this over and over again from the original Fitzmas

To the Michelle Bachman “indictments” that the left kept promising to election night where the entire left was ready to dance before they were disappointed.

I would have thought that election night would have taught them their lesson

But no. They are ginning themselves up and the crash if nothing comes of it, from a not guilty verdict after a long trial, to a Trump Pardon (don’t think for a moment he wouldn’t do it) to the possibility that no indictment takes place at all (not very likely but that would explain the silence of the NY times) their crash will be most amusing to the rest of us.

Actually now that I think of it, maybe the left setting itself up for a fall isn’t that big a surprise, the real surprise would be them taking the Ann Althouse route.

I’ve got nothing to say, because it hasn’t happened

If the left thought like this, THAT would be an earth shattering shock.

Me I’m going to see what happens but I’ll tell you one thing. If you think this White House isn’t ready to win this fight, you haven’t been paying attention this last year.
