Back in April, I took a look at the 2016 GOP challengers for a few districts in North Carolina. Today I’d like to zero in on one in particular.

North Carolina’s 2nd House Congressional District is currently occupied by Renee Ellmers, who defeated Democrat incumbent, Bob Etheridge, in the 2010 election.

During the 2010, Ellmers was touted as a Tea Party candidate. She beat Etheridge by nearly 64,000 votes.

Granted, Ellmers had a little help in 2010 with momentum from the Tea party and well, from Etheridge himself when he was caught screaming at and arguably assaulting a student journalist on camera outside a Nancy Pelosi fundraiser.

Once elected, Ellmers seemed to stick to her campaign promises – at least for part of her first term. It wasn’t long until Ellmers was seen to be in a comfortable spot in John Boehner’s little army, complete with committee appointments.

In the 2012 election, Ellmers saw 2 challengers. One reason for multiple challengers might have been redistricting that occurred, however the bigger reason was Ellmers had fallen flat on keeping the promises that put her in office.  One big reason at the time was her 2011 vote in support of raising the debt ceiling.

After 2012, her positions and votes just got worse and that led to Ellmers getting Frank Roche as a primary challenger in 2014. Roche was defeated and then Ellmers went on to defeat the Democrat candidate and American Idol runner-up, Clay Aiken.  I covered a bit of the NC-02 race here at Da Tech Guy, if one wants to see what happened at that circus.

In 2014, Ellmers had her own caught on camera debacle when she insulted citizens who came to her office to confront her on Amnesty. Ellmers was caught on video yelling at them, “You don’t have any damn facts!”.  Ouch. Definitely not a great moment for the Congresswoman and an ironic one, given the video of Etheridge raging at a camera person assisted in his downfall.

Now here we are in 2015, with 2016 around the corner. Ellmers this time around has not one, but three primary challengers. They include Frank Roche, who is giving it another go, Jim Duncan and Kay Daly, a sketchy late comer to the race.

The voters who put her there didn’t do so in order for her to vote yes on things like Amnesty for Illegals, for the Reauthorization of the Ex-Im Bank and on reauthorizing No Child Left Behind.  Also, her squishy maneuvering around abortion issues, like the pain capable bill, doesn’t help her at all.

Flash forward to 2015 and Rep. Ellmers has earned herself  truly terrible conservative ranking with Heritage Foundation. Actually, if you look at it, it’s really a liberal ranking. Heritage awarded her a 60% out of 100 score. She’s 3rd from the bottom of the list of North Carolina Republicans.

Her record has gotten so bad, that one of her opponents has managed to populate an entire website with her failures.  The site is really pretty brilliant. It’s called AskHerWhy.net and it hits Ellmers on everything from Illegal immigration to Abortion.

With voter outrage building, it is  not hard to see why momentum is building to unseat Ellmers in 2016.

Tragic news comes out of North Carolina that has ramifications for the Congressional Race in district 2.  Keith Crisco, the candidate trailing Clay Aiken in the recent primary by 300 some odd votes, has passed away. Crisco was a former Secretary of the N.C. Department of Commerce under Former Governor Bev Perdue.

ASHEBORO — Asheboro businessman and congressional candidate, Keith Crisco, 71, died suddenly at his home today.

Information is incomplete; however, early information indicates he suffered injuries from a fall around 1 p.m. at his home on 1263 Thayer Drive in Asheboro. He was reported dead at the scene when emergency workers arrived there.

John Ogburn, Asheboro city manager, confirmed that the Asheboro Police Department and Asheboro Fire Department responded to the scene. He said the case will go to the state medical examiner to determine an exact cause of death. – Courier Tribune

Crisco, 71 years old, apparently tripped on a rug and fell. So, it would appear the Aiken wins by tragic default. Crisco was likely within the margin for asking for a recall, however, from reports it doesn’t appear he was intending to do so. If the final count puts Crisco ahead, the district’s executive committee of the Democratic Party in North Carolina would then choose the nominee.

Reactions were a mixed bag on Twitter, from Aiken suspending his campaign activities to a bit of off-color humor.

Gay mafia eh? Perhaps these gentlemen were involved? All jokes, aside, prayers should go out to the Crisco family. End result: It now seems Aiken will face off against Rep. Renee Ellmers.  Rep. Ellmers secured her position by winning the primary versus Frank Roche. Roche did not go quietly and called out the GOP establishment and the lack of voter turn out. Excerpt from his parting remarks is below via Daily Haymaker, but hit the link and read the full statement.

Only 15.6% of us who live in North Carolina’s 2nd District bothered to vote on Tuesday, May 6, 2014.  Republican and Independents, 21,358 of them, voted to give Rep. Renee Ellmers another two years in office.  We missed sending a true conservative leader to the U.S. House by 6,370 votes.

Pathetic.

In the 36 hours after not winning a hard run election there are many emotions that come and go: disappointment, sadness, guilt, bewilderment, frustration, and anger.  I’m in the frustration and anger stage.  Remember SNL from 1988, “How am I losing to this guy?”  Note to self: U.S. Congress, proper qualifications not required.

What is the GOP establishment thinking?

The establishment, with some help from one of our newest lefty billionaires and the left leaning media, helped reelect the least qualified candidate in the 2nd District Republican primary.  They failed the 2nd District and America. They overstepped their pledged boundaries of neutrality during the primary and again demonstrated themselves to be part of the problem.  Local petty political gate-keepers assisted their poorly qualified incumbent in ways that require they be removed from their volunteer Chairmanship positions.

Ouch. In the meantime, NC Democrats are putting their stock in reality TV star who managed to be fired from Celebrity Apprentice, came in second place on American Idol, takes questionable selfies and couldn’t be bothered to show up to the education committee he was appointed to by the President.  Oh, and just a reminder on what Aiken thinks of the GOP, Mormons and Black conservatives:

H/T to Gay Patriot for that lovely and tolerant deleted tweet.
Who knows what will happen next in NC-02. Whatever does, I’ll be sure to report back on. Stay tuned.

Last week, I wrote about  Frank Roche – Candidate for #NC02. Since then, the primary for this Congressional district in North Carolina has taken place.  Unfortunately for Roche, Ellmers successfully defended her seat with 58.76 % to Roche’s 41.24%. On the Democrat side of the aisle is where the circus has come to town.  This week, I’m writing American Idol runner-up and fired Celebrity Apprentice — and by the way, this is about the same NC District 2 Congressional race.  Stop checking your browser address. No, you are not at The Onion.

As of this morning, when I penned this article, the Democrat primary to decide who will face Congresswoman Ellmers has not yet been made official, but right now American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken is in the lead over former Commerce Secretary Keith Crisco. No, I’m not kidding.

Yes, the American Idol runner-up, who also was punted from Celebrity Apprentice (Trump said he was a nasty little guy, not sure if that helps or hurts) as the guy who will face Ellmers. It’s hard to imagine someone with this kind of taste in selfies being a Congressman… well, maybe not that hard if he’s a Clinton Democrat:

War on women?
There shouldn’t a demographic he can miss based on  his big TV ad. If only that ham-handed ad told the truth about how seriously he takes education. For example, he is so serious about it that he skipped all eight of the meetings of the Committee on People with Intellectual Disabilities – of which he was appointed to by the President.  Aiken responded he was too busy with his American Idol runner-up tour:

“While it’s true that I couldn’t attend many of the committee meetings, I had just finished American Idol,” the email continues. “So I made it clear to the committee during the first meeting I attended that I was touring and working on my album at the time and that I couldn’t be physically present for most meetings.”

GEE, maybe you should have turned down the appointment so someone else could be on the committee and actually do some good? Kids? Pfffft.  Too wrapped up in dictating his catering needs and in being a runner-up, which he almost wasn’t after being dumped in a local TV studio try-out. Perhaps that’s because off-color, sexual innuendo jokes are more his style. We at least know his idea of fun, being invisible and watching people in their rooms.  Sounds like the makings of a hit – with stalker overtones. Stalkers are no stranger to Aiken anyway.

While Aiken doesn’t drop the F-bomb in his performances, his pals guarding the doors at his fundraisers do. Makes you wonder if Aiken is a believer in the “Big Tent” idea or not if anyone with a camera showing up gets told to ‘get the F-bomb out’.  I wonder if Aiken dropped any F-bombs on the plane when he was involved in that armrest scuffle?

By the way, where has junior been this whole campaign? Most running for office would have brought out the kids for the photos. Aiken wins a point for not using his kid a prop in a campaign but loses that same point for putting the kid on the cover of People magazine wherein the same story he comes out as being gay and has his online solicitations for sex mentioned. Great baby announcement.

If this is the great and best hope NC Democrats have, then the movie Idiocracy could now confirmed as a documentary. Batter up, Congresswoman Ellmers. Your home run awaits.
