The last time I interviewed Ann Marie Buerkle on Camera she was a candidate for congress, however her title of Congresswoman has not dampened her willingness to talk not even to a Radio Talk Show host and blogger from out of state.

Unfortunately the Acoustics of the area were HORRIBLE and we didn’t have time to re-shoot as she had to dash to another event so I will provide a transcript of the interview belowo:

DaTechGuy: I’m here with Congreswoman Ann Marie Buerkle. Ann Maire two years ago myself and another fellow in a hat Stacy McCain came to Syracuse, you were in front of a building that was being rented, you were talking about how the Syracuse polls had you down 11 pts. You ended up winning that race, now it’s two years later as the incumbent, much different feel I imagine?

Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle (R-NY-24) A Much different feel because now we have a record, a record I’m very proud of.

DTG: Now that’s something I’ve noticed when I”ve talked to people. I interviewed quite a few people before this event and the word that I hear a lot about you is: ‘I talked to Ann Mare and she said’, ‘I’ve talked to Ann Marie and she said.’ so seem to be a rather accessible congresswoman.

AMB: We have We’ve had over 40 town hall meetings, we had over 60 mobile town hall units, we’ve been out in the community for hundreds of meetings and that’s what we’ve done we’ve embedded ourselves in the community and we have really been the voice that update New York hasn’t had in a long time.

DTG:Now what’s interesting is I remember two years ago your opponent [Congressman] Dan Maffei was not talking about his record and spending his time attacking you. It’s two years later, and he’s still not talking about his record and he’s still attacking you, and I don’t see how he thinks that strategy is going to work so well two years later when it didn’t work before?

AMB:Dan Maffei should be ashamed of himself and I don’t know how he has the moxie to go out and ask the people for their vote after he has turned down four of these town hall debates, that he’s turned down major network debates, one with the local newspaper. He is afraid to reflect on his record, he is afraid to take responsibility for what he has voted for. All he wants to do is as you said: Attack attack attack rather than looking at what he voted for when he was in congress.

DTG:Now this is a slightly odd question, of course you’re an incumbent now. In terms of how you presenting yourself, in terms of how people are reacting to you. What’s the main difference you see two years later from the public when you’re talking to them?

AMB: Well when I ran I promised the people here of upstate New York that I would be their voice in Washington. And what we’ve done in the last two years, I have been their voice I have kept that promise we’ve been accessible, we’ve been responsible we’ve been independent of either party, we’ve done our best for the district. And that a promise made two years ago and a promise kept. We’re very proud of our record.

DTG:And what’s on the itinerary for the next ten days or so?

AMB: Ahem lots of, we actually have a couple of debates left, ah, we have lots of meetings with different organizations planned, talk to the people it’s not unlike what we’ve done for the last 22 months, accessible, out there, talking to people.

DTG:And I’ve gotta ask this one last question. One thing, I’ve been to several districts in NY and CT and this ridiculous “War on Women” attack has been everywhere, doesn’t matter if the candidate is a man or woman, doesn’t matter what district, everywhere I go, in Massachusetts, in my own district, we see this. Can, I don’t understand how this has become the debate when the economy is what everyone is worrying about. Is this desperation?

AMB:It is desperation, it’s distortion it’s distraction it’s a national campaign in which Dan Maffei has participated. He doesn’t want us to look at his record. He doesn’t even want to remember that he was a congressman. He wants to pretend and make that record go away. He should be ashamed of himself. He’s hiding behind the skirts of the victims of rape. He’s hiding behind the skirts of victims of domestic violence and he demeans women by thinking that the only thing we care about is the Federal government handing out free contraception. The American women are concerned about who’s going to make their healthcare decisions, about jobs about the economy, about jobs about the price of gasoline at the pump, we care about far broader and more important issues and Dan Maffei really insults women with this whole campaign that he is running

DTG: Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle 24th district, Thank you very much for your time.

Now think about this, in NY-24 we have Democrat Dan Maffei a candidate who is running away from his record, running away from the people and running away from his past (Thus the Nickname Dan “Col Runaway” Maffei or we have Ann Marie Buerkle who make it a point to stay accessible and accountable to the people in her district. Is that a choice at all? It is it REALLY?

Re-Elect Ann Marie Buerkle to Congress in NY 24

Because “Accessible out there, talking to people” is what a member of congress should be

Ann Marie was the hardest hit of the 2010 freshman class in terms of redistricting and can use all the help she can get, kick into her campaign here and help return the best conservative in the Northeast to congress.

I want you to be famous for those exact words. I want people to call you Colonel Runaway. I want children laughing outside your door, ’cause they’ve found the house of Colonel Runaway.

The 11th Doctor A Good Man goes to War 2011

While Dan “Colonel Runaway” Maffei continues to dodge open Forums Ann Marie Buerkle and the Green Party Opponent answered questions from the assembled Crowd.

There was some press before the event that took a few shots before

But were not there at the end.

I’ve already posted on the comments of the audience (the voters comments always take priority) now lets look at the event itself

The candidates made their opening cases first Miss Rozum

And then Congresswoman Buerkle:

I particularly liked the format it maximized the influence of the votes while minimizing the impact of the moderator. The questions were submitted in writing from the audience, put into a basket and drawn randomly by the moderator to be asked, Audience members were offered the chance to read their own questions if they declined the moderator would read them. The first question was on Benghazi.

At the time I hadn’t heard about them men going in against orders (more on that tomorrow). The questions continued Social Security:

The Economy:

And High Speed Rail which has been an issue of discussion in NY as well as California

The question on Fracking was one of only three where an audience member choose to ask their question themselves

I wasn’t aware that Fracking was a big issue in NY. the Next question was on Re-Licensing Nuclear Plants

and Privatizing Social Security

The Obamacare question was very significant as layoffs had just been announced at a local hospital over it

and another question on jobs

I thought the congresswoman make a good point on the nature of what a member of congress can do.

Both candidates then made closing statements, first Miss Rozum

I thought she was a rather good representative for the far left Green Party. She made a positive case for positions that many democrats would agree with and at the end of the event there were not many of her signs still in the hall to be taken. As her opponent Congresswoman Buerkle put it:

Ursula is a woman who has the courage of her convictions and I think whether agree or disagree on one issue or ten issues the only way our society and our government and our civilization is going to come, is going to reach any solutions is if people are willing to sit down and have a robust debate and discussion on issues and I think her courage as a Green Party candidate to do what she has done is to be commended and should be appreciated by this community because what she has done has not been an easy task by any stretch.

That’s pretty high praise from an opponent.

Congresswoman Buerkle closed the event with her closing statement

Throughout the event she made a positive and rational case both for her re-election and on the issues, what was really impressive was how she didn’t over promise and talked sensibly taking the voters seriously.

The real winners of the event were the voters who were present

Not only did they ask great substantive questions

But they had direct access to the candidates who spent a few minutes afterwards talking to them

And the biggest loser that would be Dan “Colonel Runaway” Maffei who after spending 2010 running away from his record has decided a winning strategy is to run away from the voters. What can you say about a grown man, a former congressman who has less courage than a girl in her 20’s as Congresswoman Put it.

Dan Maffei’s absence has been, I think an insult to the voters of this district I think if he wants the voters to know where he stands on the issues he has a responsibility as a candidate to come forth and the (record?) and you all know where he stands.

There were four town halls, one in each county in NY-24 and Dan “Col Runaway” Maffei ducked every one of them for fear they might ask him something that he would have to answer.

There is a clear choice in this race a Congresswoman who gives access or a Congressman who runs away.

Re-Elect Ann Marie Buerkle to Congress in NY 24

Because NY-24 deserves a representative who listens to the people in the district instead of running away from them

You can kick into her campaign here.

Update via the Lonely Conservative I suspect this video was not shot at the event:

Remember all of this coverage is made possible by you. My road trip came to just under $500 not counting the time put in during the three days. So far We’ve had tip jar hits covering $180 of those expenses. If you’d like to help support this kind of coverage please consider hitting DaTipJar to ensure this will not be the last of these trips to support GOP candidates that need your help.

The last stop of my Road trip was to the Campaign office of Congressman Chris Gibson in Kingston NY

Kingston could not be more different from the small town of Kinderhook where he grew up and maintains an office, it was sprawling full of nationally known names you would see at any mall which really threw off my navigation. It was late at night and I had made several wrong turns on the way but finally made it there near 8 p.m. or so.

Gibson like Ann Marie Buerkle and Nan Hayworth were both elected in the freshman class of 2010. While both Hayworth and Buerkle have a medical background Chris Gibson’s background is Military serving 24 years rising to the rank of Colonel and in the process earning the Purple Heart 2 Legions of Merrit and 4 Bronze Stars over the course of 7 deployments and 4 combat tours of duty.

Like most of the upstate (north of NY) congress members his district has been drastically redrawn from this:

To this

I talked to his campaign spokeswomen Stephanie Valle and while polls are looking good with such a drastically redrawn district they are taking nothing for granted.

While his opponent has decided to play the war on women card so like practically every Democrat Congressman Gibson instead runs on and toward rather than away from his record, but one would not expect a decorated soldier to do anything less.

Optimistic polls not withstanding with only a +2.3 point registration advantage for the GOP it would be a good idea for national republicans to give a hand in this race to make sure the Colonel is returned to congress.

Re-Elect Chris Gibson to Congress in NY 19

Congress needs people who will lead from the front

One problem I ran into during my road trip was a reluctance on the part of avg voters to go on Camera. The Big Exception was in NY-24 at the Clay Town Hall candidate forum. About 75 voters came to Watch Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle (R-NY) and Green Party Candidate Ursula Rozum answer questions on a wide variety of issues. Democrat Candidate and former Congressman Dan Maffei skipped this town hall as he has every previous one.

However the voters were there and talked to me. First was Ralph:

My batteries died in the middle of the interview so I shot a 2nd part

Lee had some Choice words for Dan Maffei missing the event:

One Lee talked to me the dam was opened and people queued up to speak to me, First Michael on Obamacare

Mark who had comments on High Speed Rail

And Ed on Capital Gains

I’ll have the video of the Q & A later and the Candidate’s reactions but what about voters? I talked to Gary

There is one constant theme in all these interviews, Ann Marie Buerkle accessible, and running on her record. Dan Maffei not accessible.

If this is what’s going on after two years, I think Congresswoman Buerkle will do very well come election day.

Incidentally if you are wondering why there are no Maffei or Rozum supporters were interviewed, it’s simply because none were willing to talk. I gave a general invitation to the crowd and went from person to person, I can’t make people talk to me nor will I film a “non-combatant” without permission

Today on DaTechGuy on DaRadio we will be talking my just concluded Road Trip through CT & NY talking about What I saw.

Ann Marie Buerkle and Green Party candidate Ursula Rozum prepare for their Town Hall in Clay NY

There are few things more frustrating that being lost 1.1 miles from your destination but here I sit in Kingston NY at a McDonalds Ray Kroc Memorial Media Center having a terrible time finding the Chris Gibson office just a mile away.

The day started strong with an interview with Ann Marie Buerkle’s Campaign Manager David Ray in NY-24

He described Ann as a Great conservative in the NE, facing stiff challenge from a Washington insider well-funded. He calls Ann “the best conservative we have in the North East”, I’m inclined to agree but I wouldn’t limit the description to this area.

I asked about the curious decision of Dan Maffei to skip this town David answered that Congressman Maffei doesn’t want to talk about his record he simply wants to attack. This frankly was the same plan in 2010 and I remember how that ended up.

Meanwhile Ann has been most accessible as she promised this will be her 24th town hall and has continued to fight this crippling debut declaring:

“it immoral to pass on this debt to our children and grandchildren”

The inane attempts to paint the former nurse as “Anti-Women” and “Pro-Rape” have become an absurdity. Another Buerkle Worker Cheryl Job

noted her last Women’s event drew 200 women and I noted her HQ was VERY female.

The full video from the town all will go up later as time doesn’t permit the upload, for now we will say that the event was full of substance and solid questions from voters, which likely explains Congressman Maffei’s absence.

From Clay I headed east and had the pleasure to visit the shrine of the newest Canonized Saint Kateri Tekakwitha:

Again time doesn’t permit me to upload the lot but from the shine I headed east for a meeting in NY-21, when I called 30 min away from the campaign HQ I was told the person I was to meet was not available, so I changed directly south to Kingston and now sit 1.1 miles away from my goal, a Uturn and a slight right in the dark away.

Once I finish my last stop it is a 3 1/2 hour drive home, to drop off my stuff, drive to the car rental place, drop off the car then walk home through the toughest gang and gun infested neighborhood in town.

I’m Sicilian, I should manage, all I have to do is wake up on time tomorrow for the show, that’s the trick.

I’ll post and upload the remainder of the stuff then, but for now, it’s playing find the HQ, wish me luck.

Remember this coverage is made possible by you. If you’d like to help pay for this trip and move that thermometer feel free to hit DaTipJar below and keep the gas in the car a few meals and the car rental bill.

I’m sitting right now in the Fishkill offices of Congresswomen Nan Hayworth waiting to hear back from campaign officials concerning her race here in NY-18.

Oddly enough I stayed at the local Days Inn under a mile from here

Thanks for the bed oh Tip Jar hitters

but when I found out Zilla of the Resistance who I hoped to visit with was in a local hospital I decided to swing up first to see her and how she is doing.

Zilla and her reader provided portable nebulizer

This was a bit of a shock to me but not as much of a shock to those who have falsely claimed that Zilla either was not sick or not even a woman

You know I’m always hoping for a tip jar hit (and I’ll ask for one below) but if you can only afford to give to one of us, I think Zilla could use it more.

From the Hospital I headed back to Fishkill and saw the Hayworth Office where they staff kindly allowed me some space to work:

and a little bit of Hayworth swag

As a rule I don’t take yard signs as they are most valuable in the district.

Hayworth’s district is small compared to some of the large one farther north:

But the fight is just as tough, the left has predictably been using their standard “War on Women” lines, the fact that Nan Hayworth is not only a woman but a medical doctor doesn’t seem to have caused any kind of ripple in this nonsense. It certainly doesn’t seem to faze the overwhelmingly female staff that I met in the office.

There is however a real interesting issue concerning this race. Nan’s opponent Sean Maloney who apparently is looking for a spot in the group Manhattan Transfer since he has done is best to try to convince the voters of the district that he has transferred himself to this district from Manhattan, but two days ago during the Debate on Tuesday bragged about being involved in a company that created 100’s of jobs.

It is an effort to change the complexion of a race that RCP has +7 for Hayworth at the moment but I suspect this boast might have costs as apparently this company has more to it than meets the eye, in fact it has more to it that some folks on the left might not want in front of the voters eyes…but that for my next post.

Let me leave you with this thought

Re-Elect Nan Hayworth to Congress in NY 18

Because you can’t have too many Republican Women Doctors in Washington

The only “war on women” is by the left against people like Nan who won’t blindly follow their lead. You can kick into her campaign here.

Update: Dan Riehl is ill too, my best to him.

One fact of the Race for the Senate in CT that has been overlooked is the seat that was held by the Democrat Candidate for senate Chris Murphy is now open.

and that district in the Northwest corner of the state CT-5 has a candidate named Andrew Roraback who might be in a position to be the 2012 of Scott Brown in CT.

Although I didn’t have a lot of time to speak with Andrew, I spent a considerable amount of time with his staff, he is a long serving member of the CT state House and Senate, and he was the only member of the GOP delegation to vote for death penalty repeal giving him some crossover appeal.

Most importantly the new district includes the towns he represented for many many years so he has a strong base of voters on both sides of the aisle who are familiar with and respect him.

So we have a GOP candidate with a long record and some crossover appeal running in an open seat. Unlike Scott Brown in 2010 he doesn’t have the advantage of an opponent making critical mistakes on the trail but also unlike Brown he is not running statewide so his familiarity with the district and the voters could make all the difference.

With Mitt Romney and the GOP poised to control all three branches of the Government in January perhaps CT like Mass before them might decide they want to have at least one voice in the majority when the time comes to make decisions. Andrew Roraback can be that voice and with the GOP with such an advantage in fundraising over the Dems the party is in a potion to help make it happen.

Vote Andrew Roraback for Congress

Even the bluest of states deserve at least one seat in the Majority.

You can kick into his campaign here.

Update: Extra brown in the title, Hey I’ve been driving all day, a tad tired you know.

Says the Syracuse “She’s 12 points down” post standard:

When asked about her renewed focus on abortion this past week, Buerkle said she is performing her duty to represent the views of the 25th Congressional District. Buerkle said she is convinced most residents of the district agree with the bills she has co-sponsored.

“I can’t give you a hard statistic,” Buerkle said. “But I heard from many people throughout the campaign who would not support me unless I was pro-life.”

The Lonely Conservative notes that the Post Standard considers it front page news that a former member of Operation Rescue is against abortion. Of course the left to whom Abortion is a sacrament, is attacking:

“Rep. Buerkle was elected to Congress because she promised to create jobs, but instead, one of her first acts is to co-sponsor and champion a bill that takes away health insurance benefits that the majority of women currently have,” DeFazio said.

Because of course repealing Obamacare and limiting what government funds are spent on has nothing to do with small government does it? Additionally having been in office for an entire 20 days, it’s undoubtedly her fault that the unemployment rate hasn’t already dropped to Bush Era levels.

NOW also attacks but that’s to be expected

Buerkle’s actions on the issue also alarm Karen DeCrow, of Jamesville, the former national president of the National Organization for Women.

“This district does not share her views on birth control, sex education, family planning and abortion,” DeCrow said of Buerkle. “She has a different view.”

Yeah the district disagrees with her so much that as the Lonely Conservative points out an attack ad used against her highlighting her opposition may have pushed her over the top:

NY25 covers all of Onondaga and Wayne Counties, and part of Cayuga and Monroe Counties. But a large portion of NY25′s voters are in Onondaga County. I did some digging and found out that there were 147,332 Catholics in Onondaga County alone in 2000 (Sorry, I searched for hours and couldn’t find any more recent data, or a breakdown of religious affiliation of registered voters.) I’m sure enough of those Catholics are registered voters who could swing the election in Buerkle’s favor. This race hasn’t been about social issues. It’s been about the economy, the direction of our country, and the failed policies of the current administration and Congress. By running this ad Dan Maffei just gave undecided pro-life voters a reason to vote for Ann Marie Buerkle.

You would think she was a Catholic or something.

The more I see of Congresswoman Buerkle the more I wish she was my congresswoman.

Update: Stacy McCain: Media Shocked — Shocked! — To Discover That Ann Marie Buerkle Is Pro-Life

Barbara Espinosa of American Freedom is apparently on a road trip near the Mexican border in the desert and send me a couple of audio messages that you might find interesting:

The first notes a number of homeless people on bikes, this is very odd since she is far away from any urban area

Audio 1 Barbara on the Road!

I thought it was interesting to see homeless on bicycles on the interstate…I’m in the desert and there are not a lot of towns in between.

I wouldn’t have expected that either.

Message two comes from both sides of the border and there seems to be a whole lot of inspecting NOT going on:
Audio 2 Barbara at the Weigh Station

They are not inspecting them in any way nor are they inspecting cars and the corridor I’m driving through is a corridor for illegal immigration

It’s interesting to note that the lack of interest in inspections is on BOTH sides of the border.

She finally found a border patrol station in Texas they were using dogs rather than raw inspections
Audio 3 Barbara and the Border Patrol in Texas

The irony of this is I had my gun out on the seat in plain view and made no comment on it and just waved me on 14 miles from the Mexican border

Barbara was surprised by this but I think that’s not bad. Since she was obviously a citizen her 2nd amendment rights still apply.

More updates as her road trip continues.

William Jacobson was kind enough to host us at his house in Ithaca NY while we posted to get the Buerkle News conference stuff up:

His wife was a charming and excellent host as well. It’s also kinda strange, but I think he looks better than the shot on his site, what do you think?

Legal Insurrection + the Other McCain = a lot more hits than me

Update: I just re-read the sentence above and the punctuation is bad and it conveys the wrong meaning. It’s not his wife that’s kinda strange, but the fact that he looks better than the shot on his site, normally a shot on a site is the best shot you have.

Update 2: The full field guide is here.

My latest for the Examiner is Tracking the Big Red Wave:

Last week in Ma-4 I talked to A Haitian immigrant who came 32 years ago indignant that people assumed she supported the president because she is black and talking of American opportunity , while her co-worker spoke of regret for her Obama vote of 2008 opting home this election cycle. I’ve heard this a lot, but is this a local trend or a national one?

This week I traveled 1200 miles through 5 states to find out:

It’s my experience that confident campaigns don’t fire people for wearing hats

I also neglected to mention my last examiner article Tea is stronger than hope and change in Boston feel free to check it out too.

Yeah it’s still 10 days to go but all my data points are looking in the same direction I think the Red Wave is on its way but as Hughey says, if you slack off it might not get here, so go out knock on some doors and make some calls STAT!

is that when you meet people face to face there is a different dynamic, you build up contacts who can inform you that can really add to your knowledge of events.

Dan is a good guy who is making some good points but without being there the feel of the district is not conveyed:

Scott: “Mister Spock, the ship feels wrong.”
Spock: “‘Feels’, Mister Scott?”
Scott: “I know it doesn’t make sense. Instrumentation reads correct, but the feel is wrong. It’s something I can’t quite put into words.”

And it’s that feel that leads to a lot of good things.

There are a lot of Thank you’s that I’d like to give at the moment.

First for the lonely conservative and her Husband who were great hosts and treated us like kings

The Ann Marie Buerke supporters who gave us a lot of access felt very welcome.

To Bill Jacobson and his wife who gave us internet access and Pizza when we needed it to get a hot report up.

Stacy and Bill

The people at McDonalds in Hancock NY who gave us a lot of time to post and charge

The manager at Friendly’s in Gettysburg Pa for talking to me about her district (pa-19)

To Joe Van Dalsum who I enjoyed talking to so much

To all the tip jar hitters who paid for the rental

To Stacy McCain’s wife who made me Tea

To my friend Steve’s wife who let me recharge my PC at their place

To the nice ladies in Endicott NY who gave me so much of her time and a friendly waitress who served me great cream of turkey soup.

To Hughey Woodring who not only knows more about politics than I will ever learn but is an incredible host

To Ladd Ehlinger Jr for his kindness to my Son

To the readers for giving me my biggest month ever (and we have 11 days still to go)

And to God for getting me home safe

Never Drive with Robert Stacy McCain on a full stomach

The amount of Obama 08 bumper stickers I saw on people’s cars after passing through 6 States could be counted on the figures of both hands

One of the oddest things you see is sometimes are groups of 10 of the same sign vs groups of 10 of the opposite sign in the same area. Why bother?

When driving with Robert Stacy McCain, always have extra napkins handy for the coffee to be spilled.

Talked to some State Police in NY the long districts far away result in so many signs up in wooded areas

McDonald’s Wi-Fi is your friend

When driving with Robert Stacy McCain every Deer Crossing sign will be pointed out to you.

The biggest difference in this year vs other years instead of trying to motive the “youth” vote that maybe comes out one year and poof, this year it is the 40 & 50 somethings who are getting involved, and they will STAY involved. Thanks tea party.

Speaking of the tea party, the willful blindness that the left has about it is one of two constants everywhere.

When driving with Robert Stacy McCain the easiest way to annoy him is to put on Doctor Who CD’s on while driving.

When tired even a 5 minute stop to close one’s eyes can be the difference between driving tired vs driving alert

Find an excuse to drive through the mountains of Pa and NY during the foliage season, it was spectacular.

When driving with Robert Stacy McCain, Say your Rosary

Buy newspapers in every town you stop

You have to be unafraid to approach people to ask them questions to do this properly but you also have to know when to make conversation and when not to.

When traveling on the cheap the dollar menu is your friend

When driving with Robert Stacy McCain he will call more people from all over the country than you know yourself.

Never let your gas tank get below a 1/4 of a tank, pay the price if you have to.

My comfortable drive speed is between 70-75 Stacy McCain’s comfortable drive speed is faster than the person ahead of him.

it takes an awful lot of effort for me not to stop at every battlefield and shrine

When driving with Robert Stacy McCain the best way to keep him awake is to talk history and philosophy.

I talked to Joe at the end of the press conference on October 18th

I’ve heard Joe’s complaint repeated over and over again when I am writing and even when I’m just at the diner having a bite. It’s the new people getting involved that makes all the difference

Never had a general instalanche before so rather than hitting the sack here is a summary of posts on my road trip with Stacy McCain. I should note the Massachusetts races were covered with McCain on his trip to Mass as we did daily road trips.

And it goes without saying you should hit Stacy McCain’s site, just keep scrolling.

Update: And don’t miss Stacy’s latest on the Bielat/Frank race

After 528 miles today (actually more since I hit Gettysburg on the way) and over 1200+ miles over 70 hours ( since 3 a.m. Sunday ) I’m home at last.

I’ll be doing a quick summery post and I’m still working on an examiner column, but for now, as promised I made it back for the boy’s 17th birthday.

Thanks all of you for reading, will likely be blogging a bit light as I catch up on sleep.

At the Keith Fimian HQ running in va-11 here in Fairfax

The HQ front door

It is a beehive of activity, people are in and out and excited. In the half hour I’ve been here workers have been in and out and in and out. The candidate has a debate tonight and time and preparation are being devoted to nailing it down.

Signs of the times, lots of activity at the Fimian HQ

Even as I was preparing to pack up a man named Joe Van Dalsum came in and picked up a sign as well.

Joe Van Dalsum at the Keith Fimian HQ

I talked to the campaign mgr Tim Edson and the story is the same, a democrat running from his record and playing the attack card and very little national polling to try to hide the decline so to speak.

Well you can’t hide voter enthusiasm and they have it here.

Here is a clip after the main press conference on the 18th where Ann Marie Buerkle answers press questions

If you ask me this race is more than wide open.

I’m going to try to get to the Keith Fimian HQ in Fairfax VA first, then hit a press conference in DC at heritage and from there lunch with a pal and back toward Massachusetts.

I’ll let you know how this goes.

BTW Stacy’s wife is as delightful as he suggests and his kids are as self-reliant as he is while still being kids. Watching the 5 of them get ready for school brought me to the days of my youth.

I’ve delivered Stacy McCain to his home at about 1:30 A.M. about 3 hours after he hoped to be there but we got great material from pa-10 and local party guys kept showing up to meet us so how could we leave?

My basic plan is to get up around 7, blog a tiny bit and then hit va-11, then a Heritage blog event , lunch with a pal then start back north with an idea of getting home by midnight or to divide the trip maybe hit another house race and find a hotel, motel, k of C or a friendly blogger to crash with in Maybe Conn or NY.

All that will be determined by when I wake up ready to roll so I’ll read you all later

Hughey Woodring and Jason Fitzgerald talk to me about the Tom Marino campaign and Pa in general.

The most important words said in this interview:

Me: What would you like to say to those people not only in this country but all across the country republicans and conservatives who are thinking: “It’s looking good and we can ease off a little?

Hughey Woodring: Get out and volunteer and get the word out!

Me: Is there any other way to win an election without working just right till the end?

Hughey: No!

Hughey Woodring advice about not getting complacent predates Glenn Reynolds, after all Hughey is old enough to be his blogfather

Update: Stacy McCain has an update with some good poll numbers for the district

Update 2: Here is an example of a Poll not as reliable

Anyone who believes Ann Marie Buerkle is down 12 in NY-25 likely thought that Tom Marino had no chance in Pa-10

Update 3: Instalanche, check out the links to all of my posts on the road trip here.

Had trouble finding the campaign office but lucky for me the we passed the local Sons of Italy lodge 2786

Marino HQ in Williamsport PA

and who do I run into but the candidates sister Mary Jo who directed us to the campaign HQ.

At the HQ I talked to Hughey Woodring the election chairman who had just done over 100 calls for the candidate tonight. He told me that the response was overwhelmingly favorable, even democrats who they called can’t seem to wait to vote republican this time to stop the spending and to repeal the Healthcare Bill.

Hughey Woodring at Marino HQ

This is consistent with what I’ve been hearing again and again from tea party meetings from the Sean Bielat race and all over.

If I’m Tom Marino I’m feeling pretty good about the Pa-10 race, but as Glenn Reynolds says: Don’t get Cocky.

His campaign MGR Tom Communication director Jason Fitzgerald should be here by 8:30 in a few minutes I’ll update you then.

Update : Fitzgerald hasn’t arrived yet but Stacy’s post is up and I would strongly suggest that anyone wanting to know how to run an election contact Hughey Woodring STAT! That guy knows his stuff!

Jason goes over the district with Stacy

Update 2: Talking to Mr. Fitzgerald, says the race will be won in Lycoming county which made the difference in the three way primary that Tom Won bigtime. He believes that this race came in under the radar.

Looking at the overall situation in several races

You mean to say that there are races the MSM was ignoring that might finish differently than they think, who’s been saying that about Massachusetts for a bit?

Update 3: Just talked to the county chairman Bob Brobson he says the Marino race in pa-10 and the Senate and governer’s races are looking good but we have an awful lot more work to do. He has been taking Hughey Woodring advice.

Camillus NY 10:30 A.M. Oct 18, 2010 (via Ithaca NY 1:32 p.m. at the house of Legal Insurrection)

Stacy & I hit the Ann Marie Buerkle Press conference in front of a small mall in Camillus NY today

Stacy Takes Notes

The Press was there to hear what she had to say:

the press sets up for the conference

Buerkle bluntly stated that congressman Maffei was misrepresenting the fact.

Buerkle addresses the press

The idea is he is desperate to change the subject from his own voting record. This would not be a surprise as democrats in trouble have been running from their votes and the voters all over the country this year.

As for the “interesting” poll that shows her down, she pointed out bluntly that Maffei has not released polls all year, considering that she has been neck and neck for a while the idea that he suddenly has a 12 point lead is…”interesting“. Then again this is the same polling service that padded Rick Lazlio’s by 19 points and was 38 points off on Paladino in the primary.

I know its near Halloween, but if Maffei & the Mainstream Media are going to give out Whoppers…

Much better Whoppers than the MSM or Maffei's campaign are delivering this Halloween

…I suggest these instead.

I will have video uploaded as soon as I’m able, meanwhile next stop Pa-10!

Update: Stacy’s video uploaded faster than mine, here is his take at the blog and his spectator piece on it.

At the press conference, Buerkle introduced one of her tenants – a hairstyling salon owner named Andre – and said his situation exemplifies the economic problems of the 25th District that she hopes to address in Congress. “Andre represents one of those hard-working Americans who takes a risk. He spends days in his salon working hard to be successful. And Andre and all the other small businesses in upstate New York . . . need Washington to get out of the way.”

Meanwhile I’ve managed to get a quick video of people reacting before the press conference up:

The grass roots are very green here and will likely grow to a bumper crop come Nov 2nd.

Update 2: Here is Ann Marie Buerkle at the press conference:

I interviewed John and the Ann Marie Buerkle event last night:

this is the real problem for dems. Over and over I see republican voters who are new to the system, while on the Democratic side existing voters are staying home.

I caught most of Ann Marie Buerkle’s speech today at the event in Clyde yesterday

I like her a lot, but the Lonely Conservative’s high opinion of her speaks volumes as well.

Got a very good nights sleep, Stacy is still kinda Crashed on the couch but he was up later than me and thus managed to tell this story before I did:

“I work 75 hours a week at this place,” said the owner-operator of a convenience store on State Route 41 in Cortland County. “All I ever get are bills coming in, where they’re raising the taxes on this and raising the taxes on that.”

The silver-haired small business owner’s diatribe had begun when I put a copy of the Syracuse Post-Standard on the counter and he asked, “Reading about all our political prostitutes?”

His business was my favorite stop of the trip, he sold RootBeer Popsicle which I like in the same way Stacy likes coffee and cigs.

He also points out that the store was in fact in NY-24 so I stand corrected about passing through Mr. Hannah’s district.

He also updated his post with an interview with Ann Maire Buerkle

It's not generally known but Robert Stacy McCain weaves a multi colored cocoon and emerges from it daily to blog

So once he emerges from the cacoon we will be off and running.

At the Phillips HQ in Elmira

We ended up at the George Phillips HQ in Elmira near 4 p.m. The candidate had a commitment but his campaign manager gave us a run down of the district.
Campaign mgr Matt Hudson Explains the situation

It is a very odd shaped place that is designed to add democratic strength to the district.

The Long and Winding 22nd district

and before you complain about the evil democrats doing that, it was republicans who did so under the theory that it decreased democratic turnout in several other districts at the risk of this one. (think of GA-4 etc)

What we heard is what I’ve heard consistently from voters. New people coming, excited and energized, can’t keep up with sign requests, people of all parties ready for a change. As a rule you take such info with a healthy set of skepticism from a campaign manager but I’ve heard this story over and over again, I’m inclined to buy it.

This is only a glimpse, the views here are all spectacular!

We then jumped into the car and headed north we talked to some voters on the way and a pair just before the meeting with Mr. Phillips campaign man. The consistent feeling was anger, the results slightly different, some were too disgusted to vote, others were angry and couldn’t wait to vote, and one voter didn’t like the Gov choices.
Voters are just as angry but still mixed on Carl

We reached Clyde in Monroe county at the tale end of the event

I'd never actually seen a Grange hall

Buerkle was pressing the …

Buerkle and the voters

…as Stacy and the Lonely Conservative discussed the race

Stacy and the Lonely Conservative talk campaign

Ann Marie Buerkle addressed the crowd and the people seemed to like what they heard. I must confess I’m partial to her myself, her family came from Italy around the same time as mine.

Buerkle addresses the crowd

We have one more stop in NY tomorrow then it’s off to Penn-10. I’ll have some video up tomorrow, meanwhile Stacy’s latest post is here. We passed through Mr. Hanna’s district but didn’t have time to stop today.

Update Forgot to mention we ended up at the Lonely Conservatives place where this report was filed from.

I will be uploading video tomorrow.

Update 2: The Lonely Conservative tells more

Hancock NY 12:35 p.m.

One of the disadvantages of chain smoking and chain coffee drinking is you on occasion forget that you put your cig butt in the coffee and thus we are at the nearest McDonald’s to allow Stacy to clear his throat before we continue.

We started off at 3 A.M. from Fitchburg and cruised through Conn. without incident until we hit Gardiner NY where our first event was to be.

An intersection just before Gardiner NY

We arrived at 7:30 and as the breakfast was till noon I took advantage of the nearby St. Charles Borromeo parish to attend morning Mass

St. Charles Borromeo Church Gardiner NY

while Stacy kept watch for the candidate. As the priest was telling us about the unjust Judge and the persistent widow Stacy Discovered that the event was canceled. (not the breakfast, just the Candidate showing up)

The menu at the Monthly Gardiner pancake breakfast at the Fire Station

Stacy was interested in hearing the Maureen Dowd and Frank Rich Columns. I usually avoid reading them so that was bad enough but reading them out-loud was torture. Rich persists in the “violent tea party meme” and Dowd is acting petulant as if she isn’t allowed to be part of the cool girl group. One needn’t fear any liberal being informed or being energized by them so I guess that’s something.

Newspapers at New Paltz

After a brief stop in New Paltz (where I found an open internet in a gas station parking lot) we hit the road again. Our current plan is to hit George Phillips HQ in Binghamton then off to NY-25

Large Roadside sign for Phillips

So far not a lot of interaction with the locals, just some background grumbling. Considering that I am not looking shall we say, my best that’s not a huge surprise.

One oddity, the signs for the candidates have always been at roadsides I have yet to see a sign for any candidate in front of any person’s private residence. I don’t know if that is a NY Law or just an oddity, I’ll find out at the next stop.

Stacy takes a shot

: Stacy tells of our phone conversation with the Lonely Conservative and some “interesting” poll results.
