Fr. Michael Harvey: I was trying to make it easier for you.
Maggie Harvey: I didn’t want it made easier, I wanted you to say ‘No’.

Cracker My Brother’s Keeper 1995

Yesterday Stacy McCain wrote something that really struck me:

There is a reason why slut-shaming exists. If sluts are not shamed — if promiscuity is celebrated and glamorized the way Sex and the City did — more young women will waste their youth the way Julia Baugher wasted hers. Who would want their daughter to end up that way, having ruined her reputation and squandered so many chances at happiness, desperately hoping at age 37 to settle for a “reasonable choice”?

. The reason why this struck me is that I just got back home from a week staying with my friend Vinne Kelly hie brother and his 90 year old Dad in Lithonia GA right in sight of Stone Mountain. I went to school with 40 years ago with his brother George who lives a few minutes away A few hours before we flew out Saturday Night we had lunch at Bradley’s Bar-B-Que (the best BBQ I had during my trip)

While eating I thanked Mr. Kelly for having us in his house. He replied that he had taught his sons to have many acquaintances but few friends.

Now one of the things that age has taught me is that the easiest way to tell the difference between a friend and an acquaintance is either during a time of trouble or when you are about to do something incredibly stupid, foolish or both.

It’s my experience that an acquaintance will regardless of their own actual opinion will go along with what you are doing and if it’s something that society is accepting or encouraging, might even even encourage you on.

For example to suggest to a young woman going to college that he best way to avoid a bad situation might be to avoid excessive drinking at a party or even better avoiding such parties where people drink to excess is something that will cause woman’s studies departments all over the nation to label you as a misogynist who wants to control women.

To suggest to a girl like Miriam Weeks aka Belle Knox that rather being paid to have sex with strangers on film so that people can forever masturbate to the sight of said film to make up for your shortfall in the $70k tuition and expense cost at Duke, “settling” for a college that might cost 40K a year might be a better and more dignified decision can get you tagged as a fundamentalist and pilloried on social media.

To state that getting a disease like AIDS is almost impossible if you follow the biblical rules concerning sex (celibacy before marriage monogamy afterwards) while also eschewing drugs and sharing needles and marrying someone who does the same you are homophobic

To suggest to a co-worker that having an operation to remove their penis and taking hormones for the rest of their life in order to pretend they are a girl is not only dangerous but that the suicide rate of such people is very high might even get you fired in some states.

To suggest that obesity is an unhealthy thing means you are a hateful person who is “fat slaming”

Yet the reality is all these messages an actual friend, someone who really cares about you, might say if you are leaning in any of these directions while an acquaintance would go along to get along.

We live in an era where basic sense that our grandfathers knew and understood is called “hate” that voting the wrong way gets you tagged as a Nazi and eating at the wrong chicken place make you in the eyes of some a bigot. It’s no coincidence that when people quote St. Francis they leave out the key line from his lists of things to be an instrument of the Lord’s peace beause it doesn’t match the “hippie” image that they’ve created of him.

Where there is error, Truth

It’s that lack of the courage to speak plan truths aloud combined with an age where acceptance on social media by people you will never meet is of more value than having actual friends who will see things as they are and tell you so that is the cause of much of the trouble in the world.

I suggest that Ms Baugher like many of the women Stacy McCain writes about have many acquaintances but few real friends who were willing to take the risks of rejection, derision or social opprobrium to warn her away from bad life decisions.

That is a crying same and until that deficit can be tackled she and those like her will need our prayers.

Closing on a brighter note Bradley’s Bar-B-Que was really good and you should give them a shot if you’re in the area

This Saturday on DaTechGuy on DaRadio we have lawyer and blogger Sarah Rumph from the site Sunshine State Sarah for the full two hours:

BTW don’t miss candidate Buddy Roemer tomorrow on Conservatively Speaking and the entire Saturday Conservative lineup Saturday starting at 6 a.m. on WCRN.

This post on Rick Santorum:

Santorum’s brand of conservatism may not be your particular cup of tea, but there is no denying that he is a man of firm principle, untainted by even the slightest hint of corruption or scandal. Neither can it be denied that Santorum has campaigned tirelessly despite all discouragement. He has held events in all 99 counties in Iowa and you might think that some of Herman Cain’s critics — who have slagged him for his alleged neglect of Iowa — would give Santorum credit for his relentless campaigning in the Hawkeye State.

He is also a Catholic gentleman who is not afraid to BE a catholic gentleman and to articulate stands consistent with that belief no matter what any pollster or pundit says.

I haven’t made my final choice for the primaries but Rick Santorum has been consistently in my top 3 and may in fact have the best chance of getting my vote. Any conservative should be proud to support him.

Robert Stacy McCain is preparing one of his famous roadtrips to Cover Herman Cain’s bus trip in Iowa:

The “Common Sense Solutions” bus tour kicks off Aug. 4 in Des Moines. I’m thinking of booking a one-way flight because it’s my first trip to Iowa and, while I’ll be following Cain’s bus tour across the Hawkeye State, I also want to catch up with as many of the other candidates as I can before the straw poll.

My general idea is to get a solid on-the-ground perspective of the political landscape in Iowa, to talk to organizers, activists and operatives, developing sources so that all I have to do — as we move ahead toward the February 2012 GOP caucuses — is make a few phone calls to get the straight lowdown.

Stacy McCain’s goal is a full $300 less than my goal was 5 days ago, and there are a full 9 days before he has to leave.

We all know Stacy as a live wire, he drinks coffee compulsively, drives much faster than he should, smokes like a chimney, is one of the hardest partiers in bloggerdom, and is willing to drop the blog gloves the moment his honor (or the honor of a friend) is challenged.

He is also one of the most effective shoe leather reporters you’ve ever seen, he’s able to distil a long speech into the one or two most important themes within it without a second thought. He’s incredibly well read, can spot an interesting person in a crowd of hundreds and has a grasp of the English language that many reporters making big money can only imagine. He has the peculiar talent for getting himself where the story is and getting the info that the MSM missed, or chooses not to report. I’ve learned more in the 18 months I’ve known Stacy than a four-year degree could teach me. All he’s learned from me in return is the value of a fedora.

And the fruit of all of this effort, at the cost of time away from his family he offers to the entire world, with only one request. Hit The TIP Jar!

Stacy writes for money and has never pretended otherwise, he is getting ready to tell you another story first hand of a campaign in action. If that’s something you want to read, then head on over to the Other McCain and kick in a buck or two and when it’s written and commented on all over the world, you can look back and say:

“Yes it a really good story, I commissioned it you know.”

for being there for Ann Marie Buerkle’s swearing in:

Wednesday’s trip to Capitol Hill was amazing. I spent most of the afternoon with Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle, her staff, supporters and family, including a trip to the basement of the Capitol for her ceremonial swearing-in photo with Speaker John Boehner.

It was a great day but now the hard work begins.

I’m looking at the series of posts on Barrett Brown by Robert Stacy McCain with some amazement. Next month it will be one year since I met Stacy McCain face to face for the first time and what a year it has been.

Now in theory one could say Mr. Brown was only following Mr. McCain’s rules for getting 1,000,000 hits namely Rule 1 via links and rule 4 via his attacks on Donald Douglas and threats of legal action

Might I humbly suggest that if one his hoping for links and attention from Robert Stacy McCain it is possible to achieve that without a threat of a lawsuit.

First of all Stacy’s hit on you should have been cause for rejoicing. I presume the goal was attention, and even more importantly sympathy from others on the left, then fine. It’s well-known that if you can get someone to “punch down” so to speak then you will get those increased hits and ratings (read MSM and Sarah Palin). Stacy being a man of honor would have likely ignored you but when you hit a Donald Douglas it put his muse into overdrive. One should have taken that as a badge of honor, pocketed the increased traffic and moved on.

Instead you decide to actually threaten Mr. McCain with a lawsuit. Amazing! I don’t know if you are independently wealthy or just a kid, but Barrett take it from someone old enough to be your father; not only is it not a manly thing its a foolish thing. It makes you seem weak and shallow and tells the world that a post from a man you’ve never met is enough to make you go running and crying and has only succeeded in giving him an instalanche.

Mind you McCain’s post have no chance of hurting your ability to earn a living, if that was the case then maybe action could be considered, it’s only effect would be to give you more attention than you apparently deserve and make “D”/ “C” list bloggers (like myself) decide you aren’t worth a link in the future.

If I may be so bold as to suggest, instead of making enemies make friends. Back when the McCain/Johnson wars were in full swing Stacy announced the impending nuptials of his oldest daughter and I thought: “What a great opportunity for Charles Johnson to make peace by offering congratulations saying something like:

“Mr. McCain our feud not withstanding; let me congratulate your daughter on her upcoming wedding and wish her the best and much happiness.” Note NOT an actual Charles Johnson quote

A man like Stacy McCain would have been compelled to acknowledge such a gracious act publicly and it would have been a chance to soften the relationship so that when they disagreed they could cross link, each get additional hits and perhaps even meet socially and mend some fences. Stacy is a notoriously social animal and is very amiable to such an approach. Alas it was not to be.

Weigel joins the axis of Fedora
May I humbly suggest as a person who through a series of fortuitous events has the honor of calling Stacy friend that the occasion of his daughter’s birthday is an opportunity for such an event. Consider sending a birthday greeting and dropping the foolish threats. Talk humbly and perhaps you can win a friend. After all when Dave Weigel was being hit all over the right side of the sphere Stacy McCain (while disagreeing with him) stood by his friend.

Play your cards right Barrett and someday that could be you joining the Axis of Fedora.

Take my advice, although my friendship with Mr. McCain has not led me to 1,000,000 hits a year (more like a quarter million) the rewards are things that your will enjoy for a lifetime. What a gift to give yourself during this Christmas Season.

Think about it.

Hancock NY 12:35 p.m.

One of the disadvantages of chain smoking and chain coffee drinking is you on occasion forget that you put your cig butt in the coffee and thus we are at the nearest McDonald’s to allow Stacy to clear his throat before we continue.

We started off at 3 A.M. from Fitchburg and cruised through Conn. without incident until we hit Gardiner NY where our first event was to be.

An intersection just before Gardiner NY

We arrived at 7:30 and as the breakfast was till noon I took advantage of the nearby St. Charles Borromeo parish to attend morning Mass

St. Charles Borromeo Church Gardiner NY

while Stacy kept watch for the candidate. As the priest was telling us about the unjust Judge and the persistent widow Stacy Discovered that the event was canceled. (not the breakfast, just the Candidate showing up)

The menu at the Monthly Gardiner pancake breakfast at the Fire Station

Stacy was interested in hearing the Maureen Dowd and Frank Rich Columns. I usually avoid reading them so that was bad enough but reading them out-loud was torture. Rich persists in the “violent tea party meme” and Dowd is acting petulant as if she isn’t allowed to be part of the cool girl group. One needn’t fear any liberal being informed or being energized by them so I guess that’s something.

Newspapers at New Paltz

After a brief stop in New Paltz (where I found an open internet in a gas station parking lot) we hit the road again. Our current plan is to hit George Phillips HQ in Binghamton then off to NY-25

Large Roadside sign for Phillips

So far not a lot of interaction with the locals, just some background grumbling. Considering that I am not looking shall we say, my best that’s not a huge surprise.

One oddity, the signs for the candidates have always been at roadsides I have yet to see a sign for any candidate in front of any person’s private residence. I don’t know if that is a NY Law or just an oddity, I’ll find out at the next stop.

Stacy takes a shot

Update
: Stacy tells of our phone conversation with the Lonely Conservative and some “interesting” poll results.
