Ghost of Christmas Present: Look upon these! [opens his robe]
Ebenezer Scrooge: What are they?
Ghost of Christmas Present: They are your children! They are the children of all who walk the earth unseen! Their names are Ignorance and Want! Beware of them, for upon their brow is written the word “doom”! They spell the downfall of you and all who deny their existence!
Ebenezer Scrooge: Have they no refuge, no resource?
Ghost of Christmas Present: “Are there no workhouses? Are there no prisons?”
Ebenezer Scrooge: Cover them. I do not wish to see them.
Ghost of Christmas Present: I thought as much. [Present closes his robe to conceal the children] They are hidden… but they live… oh, they live…
A Christmas Carol 1984
Tommy Robinson has won an appeal of his sentence in the UK:
Robinson’s barrister argued that although the judge was right to immediately order the video be removed from Facebook, he should have adjourned contempt proceedings against Robinson to give him more time to consult with lawyers.
He was arrested at around 10.45am, did not get legal representation until midday and the hearing that saw him handed a “manifestly excessive” prison sentence started after lunch, Mr Dein said.
He argued that proceedings were “unnecessarily and unjustly rushed”, causing Robinson’s representative at the time to miss potential mitigating factors that could have lowered his sentence.
Robinson’s real “crime” has been to report on trials that the UK finds uncomfortable, namely crimes involving Muslim immigrants preying on young women. Here is the video
In America this is what we call “journalism” but in 2018 England this is called “crime” and for this crime Robinson was tried sentenced and jailed in less time than it took me to drive from Fitchburg MA to Lancaster PA where I am writing this post and then put a gag order on discussing it that prevented journalists from talking about it.
Now Tommy is free on bail which means he will still face retrial and given that Britain is what it is these days I’m not all that optimistic about his chances. This is what happens when a society is more afraid of speaking about crimes and who is committing them then about said crimes themselves and embrace ignorance over facing reality.
But it’s at least a small triumph that worldwide public opinion kept up pressure to the point where it was more expedient to allow him bail.
In the end it up to the British people to decide if this is the country they want to live in, may they make a wise decision.
Or buying my book Hail Mary the Perfect Protestant (and Catholic) Prayer
Either way it’s most appreciated.
