Right wing news & The Tea Party News Network have a series of awards that they are giving at CPAC for bloggers. Both Pam Geller and Robert Spencer were nominated in different categories:
5) Lifetime Achievement Award For A Conservative Blog
Certainly these are six worthy nominees, and as much as I love Pam I can’t see how Instapundit isn’t the obvious choice.
While Pam’s chances are pretty slim above there was one award in the group that is publicly voted on, that’s the People’s choice award
8) The People’s Choice Award (The voting on this category will begin later today on TPNN.com and will last through Friday at midnight. The winner will get special linkage at the top of TPNN’s newly designed website that will be released later this week. The winner will also get 5 consecutive days of links at Linkiest next week and of course, the winner will also receive a trophy at CPAC)
Well the votes are in and it appears we have a winner, Robert Spencer seems to have gotten a very nice consolation prize for his exclusion from the Catholic Men’s Conference, not just winning the award in a field with 14 other worthy bloggers but managing over 50% of the vote in this field.
Robert was informed of his victory by e-mail:
Subject: Re: You’ve Been Nominated For A People’s Choice Award At the CPAC Blogger Awards
Date: March 2, 2013 2:58:26 AM EST
To: Robert Spencer
It officially ended at midnight. You won!
Oddly enough time passed and no anouncement of the award was made so Robert inquired what was going on?
He told me that there was a slight problem: the Tea Party group, which co-sponsored this People’s Choice Blog Award, didn’t want to allow me to receive it at CPAC next week unless I promised not to criticize Grover Norquist and Suhail Khan as I accepted the award.
I told the organizer that I couldn’t agree to that. He asked me if I had planned to talk about Grover and Suhail. I said no, I hadn’t, but I had to now.
So that’s that. The People’s Choice Blog Award is now the Grover’s Choice Blog Award. I will not be going to CPAC and will not be receiving this award.
Seriously, people SERIOUSLY is that what the Tea Party has become? Is John Hawkins seriously going to go along with this? I can’t imagine anything more cowardly or dishonorable.
Why not just drop all the rules and give the award to Richard Dawkins? True he’s not a blogger, yes he’s not a conservative and yes he’s has Attacked Christianity and Judaism but when asked about the “God of Islam” he apparently was willing to give a CPAC approved answer:
In a recent Al-Jazeerah interview, Richard Dawkins was asked his views on God. He argued that the god of “the Old Testament” is “hideous” and “a monster”, and reiterated his claim from The God Delusion that the God of the Torah is the most unpleasant character “in fiction”. Asked if he thought the same of the God of the Koran, Dawkins ducked the question, saying: “Well, um, the God of the Koran I don’t know so much about.”
If blog readers wanted people who will give in to the agenda of the powerful, they could read the Mainstream media.
A final thought to those who think this is a good idea or consider this a necessary concession, I’d like to give you a quote. The Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America (AMJA) when asked about on Jihad in America:
For those of you who don’t read Arabic, here is what this says emphasis mine:
“The Islamic community does not possess the strength to engage in offensive jihad at this time. With our current capabilities, we are aspiring toward defensive jihad, and to improve our position with regards to jurisprudence at this stage. But there is a different discussion for each situation. Allah Almighty knows best.”
Do you really want to throw your friends under the bus to appease these guys?
Incidentally I called the Tea Party.net and did not get a callback at least not yet.
Update: I got off the phone with John Hawkins about 30 minutes ago here is what he told me.
1. He says He is the person who asked Robert not to speak about Kahn & Norquest as a favor.
2. He says Robert has NOT been disqualified. He is still the winner and the plaque is still going to be made in his name.
3. He tells me if Robert comes to the event it will be there for him.
I’m pleased that there is no attempt to re write history and that Robert will still get the award regardless of anything else. He has earned it.
I should also point out John Hawkins explicitly told me what he did on the record and at the end of our conversation (after we caught up a bit and talked about a few other subjects) when I again asked to confirm our initial conversation concerning the award was on the record did so.
Update 2: There is an active dispute between Robert and John on Twitter over if Robert was told specifically that not mentioning Norquist and Kahn was a condition to receiving this award or no.
FYI I know Robert, I know John, I’d say I’m closer to Robert than John, it’s a very hard thing for me that there is a dispute between them. I have never had reason to doubt either man in the past.
It would be my wish to see this settled honorably and with satisfaction for everyone.
My personal opinion is even if he doesn’t attend the award is mailed later Robert should not reject the award if offered as it was voted by the people but I of course each party must act according to their personal honor.
Update 3: I spoke to Robert Spencer a few minutes ago. His description of his conversation with John from his blog remains unchanged. He says he is willing to accept the award if there are no speech restrictions.
