Genital Integrity Awareness Week Causes Some Locals to get Snippy

By: Pat Austin

SHREVEPORT – Perhaps I’m out of the loop or not on the right invitation lists, but I had no idea about Genital Integrity Awareness Week until I drove through a major intersection Sunday and was confronted with the site sight of two dozen adults in white suits with blood stained crotches waving signs about penises.

It must have been an interesting conversation in the car of that family with young children leaving the Baptist church. As these protesters marched in the median waving their signs, those of us stopped at the traffic light could only stare in confusion and wonderment. The young lady in the car to my left tilted her head in confusion while the couple in the car to my right immediately pulled out cell phones to take pictures of the spectacle.

Apparently, the genital integrity movement wants to halt infant circumcisions and the group is trying to gain traction this year with the birth of Donald Trump’s grandson. Ivanka Trump has converted to Judaism, her husband’s religion, and now apparently the GI group has very strong feelings about whether or not Ivanka’s baby should be circumcised:

To have someone who wishes to be president publicly celebrate the forced genital cutting of a child, knowing that child’s rights were being violated, would be very disappointing. It would certainly mobilize many genital autonomy advocates to be present at his future appearances,” Intact Florida said.

Like it’s their business. Well, I guess it’s just another reason to dislike Trump.

Good grief.

Apparently, circumcision can ruin one’s entire life and cause anger toward your parents, depression, and self-loathing. Who knew? The sign one protestor held today informed everyone driving south on Highway 1 that circumcision destroys 16+ functions. They are listed here if you’re curious. Not to get too deep into this subject but … sixteen functions? Well.

There’s apparently a Facebook page for this where the group posted pictures this weekend of their protests. The gatherings don’t look much larger than the one I saw in Shreveport. Here’s another.

Who knew we had a week to observe this? And if you missed your local protests, the worldwide protest is in May.

Meanwhile, we wait with baited bated breath to find out about Ivanka’s decision on genital integrity.

“To have someone who wishes to be president publicly celebrate the forced genital cutting of a child, knowing that child’s rights were being violated, would be very disappointing.
