Utter Confusion!

One of the most interesting stories in the Hebrew (Jewish) Holy Writings is found in The Book of Beginnings.

This particular narrative revolves around a building campaign.  Let us eavesdrop on this event albeit some 3 to 4,000 years later…
“Now the whole earth used the same language and the same words. It came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. They said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.” And they used brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar. They said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, otherwise we will be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
The Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.
6 The LORD said,
“Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them.7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”
So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city. Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of the whole earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth.

What are we to make of this story?  Is it true or fictional?  Is the meaning allegorical?

The context of this Biblical narrative is  “postdiluvian” meaning that these events took place shortly after the “Universal Flood” (please see Noah- Genesis 6-9).

We sense that as humans were multiplying through an abundance of childbirths that they congregated in a Middle Eastern city known as Shinar (ancient Babylon).

These people shared several qualities that were striking in their ability to yield powerful results:
* They used the same Language. * They had the same Words. * They shared a similar Geography. * They combined their Talents and Abilities behind a Unified Project – the building campaign.

Finally, the unified People were able to exploit their talents and use them successfully in the economic sector. With regards to the Building Project, they were of “One Mind” and “One Purpose” – to build a name for themselves.

The Unity of the People caught the Eye of their Divine Creator.

Without spending too much time debating why Almighty GOD dispersed the people through language confusion, we can glean many important insights and principles from this narrative.

These people went from living in a state of collective cohesion to now operating in a state of babbling confusion.

The Tower building campaign dissolved in the midst of this chaos and was named The Tower of Babel (confusion).

What are the operating principles at play?

First and foremost, a unified people are an Unstoppable people!

GOD Himself noted that, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them.

Secondly, a Unified People can aspire and attain Greatness

These two principles and their proper application (ethics) must be in operation if individuals, families, organizations, entities, and nations are going to be efficient and effective.

When there is a lack of unity in purpose or in ultimate intention within a family unit, an organization, any particular entity, or a nation then the ultimate results will be marked by chaos and confusion.

In the next few weeks I ask my readers to journey with me as we explore how the principles of Unity observed in this narrative (Genesis 11) can point us in the right direction and away from the chaos, confusion, and Strife that we currently see manifested in many of our families, churches, cities, States and in our Beloved Nation.

GOD Bless You!
