Sunday on my ride home from work just before I reached the fifth street bridge to turn to my house I ran into a bunch of roadblocks from a huge fire that was practically flooding the road.
The fire was at the old Bartley Nolan school on Beekman street right across from St. Anthony’s rectory and down the street from where my brother lives and where I had my 1st apartment with DaWife when we were married. It had been converted into condos and apparently one of the fellows in the place might have have had some issues to say the least:
A man was found dead next to two improvised explosive devices and propane tanks on the third floor of the condominium complex at 7 Beekman St. that was engulfed in a fire Sunday night, Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early said.
At a Monday evening press conference, Early said the man has not been identified and the cause of the blaze has yet to be determined. The bomb squad was called in to remove the devices, he added.
He said the investigation is ongoing but that it appeared the devices were detonated intentionally. Nearby residents said they heard explosions when the fire initially began just before 6 p.m. on Sunday.
“The explosion blew stuff from the building as far as this point right here,” said Early, pointing to the ground next to a neighboring playground.
About 60 people have been displaced by the fire, he said.
Three of those 60 are my great niece Kaylah who with her husband and her kid sister who she has custody of lived in the complex where it happened. While they still have their jobs and their lives they lost everything else in the fire and blast as you might have expected have to start from scratch as they now don’t even have a change of clothes.
I had been planning a tip jar promotion for the launch of the new site but that can wait till next month. For now if you’d like to help this young couple get restarted I would consider it a personal favor. She is trying to raise five grand, her gofundme page is here
Please consider kicking in.
Update: Big thanks to Captain Ed Morrissey (he’ll always be Captain Ed from his old blog the Captain’s quarters) of Hotair who tweeted this out and to all who have helped you have a Sicilian in your debt, that’s always a good thing.
