My “day” job is in a warehouse, it’s not a glamorous job and it doesn’t pay great but it’s been deemed essential. I’m regularly within six feet of others and while we are all required to wear masks and have our temps taken I’m expected to show up for work and do so to pay the bills
My wife is a registered nurse. She works in a nursing home. She is regularly in contact with sick people and at least one co-worker that she had been in regular contact with has had the virus. She is tested weekly, and is expected to show up for work and she does to pay the bills.
My youngest son works in a supermarket in the deli/fish department. At work he is in regular close contact with others. Today he is out with a fever (his covid test came up negative ) and because of an earlier quarantine has no sick days left. Once the fever is gone he is expected to show up for work and will do so to pay the bills.
Which brings us to members of the House.
The members of the house make more than my wife, my son and myself combined. They have jobs of great power, prestige and posistion and every two years beg us not only for those jobs, but for money to spend to secure those jobs for another two years.
Yet despite this they are unwilling to take the same risk my wife, my son and myself take regularly to make our living after begging us to have those jobs.
I’m sorry if you want to be our leaders and you’re not willing to take the same risk as a warehouse worker, a dell worker or a nurse then resign your office and make room for someone who is.
Yesterday in my Under the Fedora column I joked that all of this Corona Virus, Wuhan Virus, CCP Virus stuff could be because some Redsox fan made a deal with the Devil who promised that by May 1st the Redsox would be undefeated and the Yankees would yet to have win a game. That reminded me of something I meant to write about a week ago that I mentioned in the podcast last week
Remember back at the start of the Trump Administration there were a bunch of stories about Witches in New York all Hexing Donald Trump. If you do a google search of it you can find stories like this:
Most of Donald Trump’s opponents believe they will have to wait four more years to see him leave the White House.
But America’s witches are more optimistic.
At the stroke of midnight on Friday, followers of witchcraft across the US performed a mass spell designed to stop the president doing harm.
A Facebook group devoted to the ritual has attracted over 10,500 likes, and coined the hashtag #magicresistance.
Now you might not be a Christian or believe in witches but given the events of the last month don’t you think it’s odd that reporters who thought this was so cool and so wonderful aren’t following up with any of these people to ask: “Hey Trump’s numbers are doing better but the country is in the grip of a pandemic, do you feel at all responsible for this?”
You would think that it would be a no-brainier to refuse to pay for an organization that has not only misinformed the world and has functioned as a subsidiary of a communist state responsible for shutting down the world by at best careless cultural practices and at worst careless release of a biological weapon.
Well if you’re a democrat or from the left that is apparently not the case to wit:
He just got done talking about how many countries are under siege. Is this really the time to suspend funding for World Health Organization?
That’s from David Axelrod and being a person who has actually run a winning campaign here is more.
Trump is always looking to blame someone else, the media, governors, now going off on WHO and other nations who didn’t suspend travel from China. Reminder, as @PaulaReidCBS pointed out yesterday – the question is what did Trump do with the time he bought after the China ban.
Yeah let’s just forget that at the time President Trump made this suspension WHO was still saying publicly no human to human spread and you guys were calling him a alarmist and a racist.
For the US to have one of the WORST domestic responses of any developed country in the world and then CEASE contributions to @WHO in the middle of a raging global pandemic is an embarrassment—a sign of weakness, panic, and scapegoating. It also endangers American citizens. 1/2
As Glenn Reynolds has said repeatedly lately “It’s easy to tell who’s on the payroll, or at least on the team.” The real question to me is “How long have they been on that team?” I suspect quite a while.
And remember these are some of the more sane reactions to the President’s move but sane or not all of them are going to be part of the Trump Campaign ad blitz in the fall reminding people what side the left was on during this Pandemic, although frankly given that people are paying more attention then they ever had it might not be as necessary.
I’ll give the last word to Robert George
After alleging multiple errors by the WHO, Trump declares we won't get fooled again.
On Easter Sunday my son put on a video of the Internet comedian JonTron with his latest takedown of Gwenith Paltrow and her Goop people.
It was a hilarious takedown of what’s pretty much a bunch of people being grifted. There is a reason why he has 6.6 mil followers
The funniest thing about this? I’ll wager the vast majority of the people featured in this video would consider belief in Christianity foolishness.
Speaking of Christianity there was a great piece at Hillfaith linked by Instapundit with six proofs of the resurrection several of which I never thought of such as
The first witnesses to the empty tomb and the living Jesus were women: It’s a sad reality, but women only counted as half as reliable witnesses as men. So the fact all four of the Gospels present women as the first witnesses to the Risen Jesus is a strong indicator Matthew, Mark, Luke and John reported the facts, not what they thought would be the most credible claims
I should have thought of this myself but my favorite proof of the accuracy of scripture is one I used many years ago at my 1st personal blog:
Now lets look at the evidence. I am going to lean on Will Durant:
He first cites Josephus circa 93 AD and points out that the praise given to Jesus by a person out to please both Jews and Romans is a tad suspect but the big gun comes from a 1st man named Thallus.
Lets Jump to the Gospel of Matthew briefly:
From noon onward, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And about three o’clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Some of the bystanders who heard it said, “This one is calling for Elijah.” Immediately one of them ran to get a sponge; he soaked it in wine, and putting it on a reed, gave it to him to drink. But the rest said, “Wait, let us see if Elijah comes to save him.” But Jesus cried out again in a loud voice, and gave up his spirit. Matt 27:45-50
Now Thallus the pagan isn’t going to put up with this. About 50 AD he states that the darkness is a purely natural phenomenon and just a coincidence.
Durant put this argument in its modern perspective:
the argument took the existence of Christ for granted. The denial of that existence seems never to have occurred even to the bitterest gentile or Jewish opponents of nascent Christianity.
And remember that particular fragment to the best of our knowledge predates the Gospel of Matthew that it unintentionally collaborates by two decades. The pagan provides the proof. Talk about working in mysterious ways.
You should really read the whole thing;
There are many candidates for some of the lamest arguments on twitter but this one is big
For 17 years, the Republicans and many Democrats insisted on spending trillions of dollars on fighting a ‘war on terror’, supposedly, to save American lives. Turns out they never really cared about protecting American lives, but just wanted to bomb brown people in faraway lands.
Of course there is the possibility that this is a lab virus released accidentally in that case there is a murder to be upset at, but I’m sure he’d consider that racist.
As I mentioned during my midnight livestream podcast (available here) had a lot of fun with people insisting that Trump is a fool and this corona virus conferences are hurting him who are oddly not willing to bet $500 bucks and give me points to back up their beliefs. Apparently “experts” and those who don’t even like try know why:
Wallace noted, “In all of our [Fox News] polls for months, Biden had an 8-9 point lead, and that’s now gone. It’s dead even.” He continued:
It seems to me as this virus goes on, that instead of this being a choice between the president and Joe Biden, as a lot of elections are, I think that this election is going to end up being a referendum on President Trump and the handling of the coronavirus.
As we get into September and October after Labor Day, I think people are going to make a judgment, and they’ll understand, the president didn’t create the virus, so I think they’re going to be fair-minded about it. Do they think he handled the health crisis well? Do they think he handled the economic crisis well?
If they do, I don’t see how he gets beat. If they don’t, I don’t see how he could win.
And that’s not even taking into account that the polls have been undercounting Trump supporters from day 1
Around 400 people were at a party at an East Bakersfield apartment complex when dozens of shots rang out, wounding six people early Saturday morning, according to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office.
Based on evidenced recovered at the scene, KCSO says, it appears at least one partygoer fired back at the suspects in a white sedan that fled the scene. Officials said nearly 100 empty shell casings of multiple calibers were recovered at the scene in the 3500 block of Pioneer Drive.
Even at a time of social distancing 400 at a party in an apartment complex is a lot. You would think that a story like this during social distancing time would be front page news everywhere but I suspect it will not be because of this line:
The suspects were only described by deputies as four black males, in a white sedan.
Now I could be wrong, we might see this as a lead everywhere and see the Governor of California condemn the lack of social distancing here, but I suspect I’d have a harder time finding a taker for a $10 bet on this than I have for the Biden election one.
On today’s Podcast we revisit the story of Brer Trump Brer Donkey and the Corona briar patch talk about the odds in election 2020, give a bit of proof of scripture on Easter Sunday/Monday talk opening the economy or not and cover a few odd stories that I missed.
The livestream starts at Midnight you can watch it here

Based There seems to be a lot of effort being made by China to control the narrative in the Corona Virus. In terms of getting reporters to say what they want they’ve had some success, mainly because of the principles illustrated by the CNN letter post I had up earlier but also because money talks and bureaucrats and reports are bought cheap.
The fact that media companies see China as a big market helps too. China is very happy to leverage their market to make them act against us, but we aren’t willing to do the same, at least not yet.
It’s been made extremely clear to the world that China can’t be Trusted. Even a few in Iran are questing them (although the official media was quick to clamp down on them. Only those who hate Trump beyond rationality still buy what they sell and even they likely don’t actually believe what they’re saying.
They can keep the scare up for as long as they can but once the virus has peaked in the US they’re pretty much finished. Already Australians have refused to unload Chinese ships. I can’t see any western company going in and those already there are not going to be anxious to stay. By this time next year the words “Made in China” are going to be like “Made in Nazi Germany” or “Free dose of Smallpox with every item.”
The longer China can keep the money flowing to the media and keep the scare on the longer they can delay the inevitable. This is also the moment of greatest danger because if China decides it has nothing to lose there is always a chance that they might go the military route now while they still have own enough of the rest of the world but we also don’t know how bad things actually are in China or how bad this has spread throughout the land.
This is going to be a giant game of chicken until the west can be sure they can replace vital industries. Once vital production is built locally or moved to South America or Vietnam, or India or even Central America. Until then it’s a question of holding China accountable without pushing them to the point of war. Meanwhile during this time China will keep up the pressure online, via paid comments, paid media, and I suspect through paid posts at blogs from people who don’t demand editorial control for money.
China is a face culture. If Trump can play nice enough publicly still calling them out in public but being respectful in direct diplomatic conversations he can keep the string going until we can cut it without a shooting war. I think he’s up to it, meanwhile China will do their best to elect Biden and the Democrats and promise them rich rewards for a deal which lets them make loud noises while conducting business as usual.
It’s Jefferson Davis’ card vs Lincoln in 1864 but like Davis it’s all China really has so they’ll play this hand as long as they can stretch it.
Well this week I start my 2nd enforced “vacation” from work in the last six months. The 1st one was when I busted my shoulder and was out just over two months. Now thanks to a positive test of a co-worker of dawife a person she worked with closely she along with me and our youngest are in quarantine.
This isn’t just a quarantine, it’s actually a quarantine within a quarantine because my son and I have been told that he have to practice social distancing from my wife as she might already be infected. So we have to stay six feet away from here whenever possible, clean areas she’s in etc…. Fortunately the house is laid out in a “circle” in the house so it’s easy to avoid each other, also there are two bathrooms so she gets the one downstairs and we get upstairs but the big thing is that she has her quilting room that we avoid anyway.
Of course once she’s in a room quilting the problem isn’t getting her into quarantine, the problem is getting her out.
One instant change has been to the Podcast. The sunday podcast usually starts at 12:35 AM to give me a chance to get home from work but as I’m already home DaTechGuy’s Midnight Court will take place at Midnight EST. That means slightly more sleep for me and because everyone in the house is under quarantine I don’t have to worry about waking up people who have to work.
One other advantage is my taxes, I know that they’ve postponed the filing deadline but even before that for the life of me I couldn’t motivate myself to get off my duff and do them. I do them all on paper and have done so for 30 years. This week with the extra time I’ll finally get them finished and even mailed, albeit from the house.
Lucky for my family my oldest has his own apartment so he is able to go shopping for us. This is handy but there is a real danger of leaning on him too much and when you’re already in quarantine it’s easy to be short tempered so one has to avoid making demands from someone who is doing you a favor by running an errand or two while trying to stay safe from us and getting on with their own life and work.
One might get down at the thought of being stuck in a house for two weeks with dawife and son with nothing but a TV and Dynasty baseball for company but consider at least I have a home with some space, family for companionship and another son who can drop stuff off along with the sicktime to use. Imagine being in a tiny NYC apartment with no space, no family to help out and no relief other than unemployment and the government air that’s on the way.
If you have read this blog for any length of time you know that I like to quote the C.S. Lewis Class The Screwtape letters which is a series of letters from a senior tempter in hell, Screwtape to his nephew Wormwood who is assigned to tempt and help damn a particular Englishman during 1939 and 1940.
Of all the quotes I’ve used from the 39 various letters the one I’ve used most often comes from a letter excoriating Screwtape for allowing his “patient” an actual pleasure that resulted in repentance.
The characteristic of Pains and Pleasures is that they are unmistakably real, and therefore, as far as they go, give the man who feels them a touchstone of reality. Thus if you had been trying to damn your man by the Romantic method…you would try to protect him at all costs from any real pain; because, of course, five minutes’ genuine toothache would reveal the romantic sorrows for the nonsense they were and unmask your whole stratagem.

This has been the great reality of that our current situation has brought us. What has become rapidly apparent is that items that were considered critical for anyone of virtue, from discarding plastic bags and plastic straws to using the right pronouns are nothing compared to stocking shelves, and delivering food, to wit:
“We went from being nobodies to essential workers,” said Chad Montgomery, also a driver with Challenger Motor Freight. “I’ve never felt appreciated in my job until now. A lot of people don’t realize it takes a truck to get stuff on shelves. If it wasn’t for a truck driver, you would have nothing.”
via ace who likely already knew this, but a lot of people, particuarly those in elite media, either in news or entertainment do not grasp that while we can live without media reports or new movies, we can’t live without the food and goods the truckers deliver.
Nothing illustrates this better than journalists who when nuts when Mike Lindell of My Pillow took the podium at the president’s latest presser. Our media betters all had shockedreactions, great quips and clever one liners to deploy at his expense.
