ReadabilityMy two cents on "thigh-gate"
Skipper: “…We even missed the mini skirts!”
Gillian: “What are mini-skirts?”
Skipper: “You remember when we left women’s skirts were clear down to here, (indicates the knee) while we were gone they came up to here (indicates WAY up the leg), now they’re back down to here again. Gilligan, we missed from here to here!”

It is an invariable truth of CPAC that there is, every year, an inordinate number of incredible looking women dressed in a rather noticeable way.
As a man who is married, but not dead…this is not a fact that goes unnoticed.
This year at CPAC the skirts seemed to get higher MUCH higher to the point where I mentioned in passing: “Why bother even wearing a skirt? Just wear a bathing suit and be done with it.”
What really surprised me was all the debate that has come of this from Melissa Clothier, then Erick Erickson Robert Stacy McCain (twice), Dan Riehl Daily pundit, insty, Little Miss Attila, Lisa Graas and more.
There are three simple ways to look at this and I’m going to say them:
As a man: If women beautiful women choose to dress in a way that shows off their various assets I will notice them.
As a father: I suggest that if you are a college age woman at CPAC networking is good, but it might not be healthy to be hooking up with strangers at a national conference, no matter what their political affiliation.
As a person trying to carry himself as a gentleman: I will do my best to not allow noticing a beautiful woman to override my dealings with her as a person or a blogger or a subject of an interview.
My advice to men is this: If a woman is so attractive as to be a distraction compliment the women on it right way and get it out-of-the-way, that way it won’t be on the back of your mind when doing other things.
My advice to women is this: It’s not for me to tell you how to dress, but if you choose to dress in a way that makes men notice then 1. Don’t be surprised if men notice you. 2. Don’t be offended if they compliment you.
Oh and for the record, I know who Tina Korbe is and met her in passing but I don’t know really know her socially. I didn’t have time for the Santorum interview and didn’t even notice the length of her skirt one way or the other until it was pointed out to me. That she is an attractive woman is self-evident, that she is a fine writer has been amply proven from her work at Hotair and that’s really all that counts in this context.
In closing I’d like to congratulate her on her engagement may she and her future husband enjoy a lifetime of happy years together.
Update 2: Instalanche, and ponder this. I’ve posted a ton of stuff on CPAC, shot a bunch of interviews and dived into the middle of the occupods to provide useful content. And the most popular post on CPAC that I’ve written is this one…and it’s not even close.
Update 3: I see Stacy is getting some grief over his post. As a friend of his let me assure you that he does not believe Tina Korbe has done anything indecorous and had absolutely no intent to embarrass her in any way. I will personally vouch for Stacy’s good intentions here till the cows come home and then even after they’ve settled down in the barn for a light lunch.

I’d take it a step further and never compliment a woman, period, unless she actually invites you to do so. On most college campuses, particularly Yale, a compliment can get you accused of rape.
I absolutely refuse to live like that.
Why is most of the best humor on display at The Other McCain always of the unintended sort? How could anyone think that RSM, who by the way has had an ad showing a woman with not a stitch of clothing posing next to something that might be a car…but it’s hard to see past all the flesh, was seriously criticising a woman over her skirt length. It’s those attacking him with lip frothing ferocity that are making all of the good comedy.
BTW – If that’s the best advice you can give a college age daughter, I hope you don’t have one. If I translate your advice into my native trailer trash, it comes out something along the lines of: “…and don’t come back knocked up.”

Excellent response.
This whole affair of the skirts is laughable. Did Hotair showcase Tina’s lovely thighs intentionally. Possibly. The question is who cares?! If attractive women wish to show off their assets, well, so frickin’ what. Really? That’s what attractive women do. It’s what all women do. Heck, it’s what we all do to make ourselves attractive to the opposite sex. Hell, if it weren’t for women we men wouldn’t even bathe regularly. Oh, and Melissa Clothier? You need to seriously lighten up and realize that young men and women want to be attractive to each other. And that’s coming from a 48 year old father of a married 25 year old daughter. Yeah, she’s attractive and likes to show it. Get over it.
I’m an older man and I have no problems with young women in a social setting wearing short skirts. However, is a venue that is both business and social, if you wish to be considered seriously as a professional, there is no advantage to howing off the inside of your thighs or your underweat.
Men, of course, NOTICE attractive women with great looking legs. But it can be overdone. A word of advice – learn how to sit properly when facing a camera. Also short skirts are not appropriate at any time for women of a certain age who are not physically fit and trim. Nothing less attractive than a dumpy woman, ala Madaline Albright, showing off her unattractive spread legs.
True, pete. Those little black stretch shorts are actually called Spanx. Really.
Tempest in a teacup.
Think of all the people (on every side of the spectrum) who are overjoyed that we are talking about this instead of the government whipping out the credit card to pay the mortgage every month, or what statutory or Constitutional power the President has that allows him to issue decrees of any kind about anything.
I’m glad you’re taking a sensible approach to this. Wish some others had done likewise.
Your blog is unreadable on an iPad. Please turn the onswipe crap OFF.
[sarcasm]I, for one, rejoice that everything else is going so swimmingly that there is time for distractions like ths.[/sarcasm]
I wouldn’t have written such a post as Stacy’s but I’m not him. The criticism sounds strange to me. I’d like to figure out how to be a better peacemaker on all this, but it seems too great a hairball.
If a woman is so attractive as to be a distraction compliment the women on it right way and get it out-of-the-way, that way it won’t be on the back of your mind when doing other things.
I respectfully disagree. Never comment on a woman’s appearance, one way or another, in any professional or semi-professional environment. Ever. Don’t take any chances.
If a woman is so stunningly beautiful that her appearance distracts you while you’re talking to her, jab a pen into the back of your hand until you stop thinking about her appearance. At least until the conversation is over.
It simply isn’t safe to comment on a woman’s appearance in the workplace. And I’d treat a conference like this as similar to a workplace environment.
[...] PETER INGEMI: My Two Cents On “Thigh-Gate.” [...]
Hi Ed!
I’m your teacher friend from NH who met you the night of the NRO debate-watching party.
I thought I’d throw this in -
If short skirts are bugging folks, I’d advise them to avoid the local public high school. Forget SHORT skirts – the skirts are completely gone and all that remains is what appear to be black nylons.
Every day I feel like I’m attending the world’s largest dance recital…
That’s very true Pete, it’s amazing
Well said.
I thought the whole Ed, Tina, Rick interview was awkwardly framed (which of course happens with an interview with usually little notice and prep). Did they frame it to include Tina’s legs? Maybe, maybe not. I think it would have been a better job if they tightened the view to one interviewer (either Tina or Ed) and Santorum (I assume they did not have the option of a two or three camera shot).
That said, it seems everyone wants to talk about young ladies legs…which I suppose is not surprising.
