ReadabilityGuns and Chick-Fil-A a matter of trust
I have heard a lot of people on the left self righteously complain that conservatives are unwilling to agree to “common sense gun control” that we are unreasonable fanatics who would oppose restrictions on the ownership of Sherman Tanks.
Most of all; we are totally wrong to believe that the left is after our guns just because of the proposed assault weapon ban.
Why would we have such a belief, how can the folks on the right even think we on the left are after their guns, all their guns?
The answer: Chick-Fil-A
Twenty years ago there was nobody NOBODY nationally who was pushing the idea of gay marriage. If Bill Clinton had come out for Gay Marriage in 1992 he would have lost 49 states.
Then came the VT Supreme Court ruling requiring civil partnerships.
When people suggested that this was going to lead to Gay Marriage liberals insisted they were alarmist. Nobody in the mainstream was pushing Gay Marriage and the whole argument was absurd. This was just addressing inheritance and hospital visitation issues which were not unreasonable.
In 1996 the defense of Marriage Act was proposed, at the time it was suggested that instead of a law, a constitutional amendment formally declaring Marriage was between a man or Woman should be passed. Such people were dismissed as alarmists. Nobody was talking about legalizing Gay Marriage and there was absolutely no need of a Constitutional Amendment to define a word the meaning of which the nation had understood for centuries.
No amendment was forthcoming but DOMA passed 85 – 14 in the Senate & 342 – 67 in the house. Democrats overwhelmingly supported the bill (32−14 senate & 188 – 65 house). Bill Clinton signed the bill into law and that was that.
Until for the third time a liberal State (Massachusetts) by a 4 – 3 ruling declared Gay Marriage Legal. Again we were told not to worry, the legality of Gay Marriage was just a question of equality and it wouldn’t make any difference in the lives of those who opposed it.
Then came the persecution of parents who opposed it.
Then came the Catholic Church being given a choice, violate your beliefs or stop placing children for adoption: never mind how well you place the children hardest to find homes for.
And as the supporters of Gay Marriage lost vote after vote after vote (and continue to block any vote in Massachusetts) they became louder and more vitriolic even to the point of assault
Look at memorandum on given day. Any person who opposes Gay Marriage is not defined as against “Gay Marriage” they are defined as “anti-gay” a bigot.
And now comes the Mayors of two large cities, Chicago & Boston, declaring publicly that Chick-fil-a is not welcome. That Chick-fil-a for daring to have Biblical principles and support them have no place in their civilized cities.
And if Chick-Fil-A is guilty then so is every Catholic Church, every Orthodox Church, Every Mosque (well apparently not Every Mosque) and the vast majority of Protestant Churches in the country, (at least the ones that are growing). If they are not welcome neither is the business of any person of faith who doesn’t bend to the pressure media and money can provide, a pressure that the President wilted against.
We have reached the point from the legality of Gay Marriage in Massachusetts, to the Mayor of the largest city in the Commonwealth publicly declaring in effect: If your business dare oppose the liberal politically correct position , your enterprise doesn’t belong in our enlightened city.
This has happened in the space of a decade, after being assured that “Gay Marriage” would have no effect on anyone else.
So when you on the left tell us, assure us, and promise us that if we on the right agree to just a little bit of Gun Control, you have our word that we have no designs on your personal firearms or anything else, you’ll pardon us for declaring:
You Lie!
If we are stupid enough to believe you on gun control then we deserve to lose the rights we are fighting to defend.
Update: Instalanche, thanks Glenn, Stay tuned for my visit to the nearest Chick-Fil-A (Had to go to NH to do it). Remember tomorrow 10 a.m. Clayton Cramer will be on DaTechGuy on daRadio talking his new book and in the second hour call 888 – 9-fedora and you can talk Chick-Fil-A and guns with me directly on WCRM AM 830
Update 2: So it’s the Bigot card now eh, OK two can play at that game

DaTechGuy’s fundraiser continues and as you can see by the thermometer your $10 & $20 is needed to keep things going as there is not a bunch of Koch money in the till for the record if the Koch brothers or rich conservatives want to kick in and get me to our $3000 goal and beyond , I’m a capitalist, I’ll take it!

Pete, I have linked this column in several places because it so perfectly points out the essential problem in this country today: The Left’s untrustworthiness prevents forming a society with them in it.
SDN this is clearly the single most popular post I’ve written. It has really struck a nerve nationwide.

Awesome post. I linked, excerpted and expanded on it. Think hate speech laws and the redefinition of what is and isn’t a religious institution by HHS and you’ll get an idea of where this could go next.
Is it Sherman tanks these days in their straw man arguments??? I used to be accused of wanting atomic bombs. Or asked “Why do you want to kill people.”
I have found that arguing with liberals is pointless when they don’t even spend a few seconds to evaluate their own arguments, which are usually all logical fallacies.
Datechguy.
What? You’re a capitalist? Have you not learned of the benefits of Distributism?
Heh.
See: “Atlas Shrugged.”
🙂
Another example is how quickly the “Stupak Bloc” of obstinately Pro-Life Democrats caved on ObamaCare after swearing up and down they’d never, ever, ever vote for mandated taxpayer funding of abortion…right up until they did.
Here were 12 Democrats that, by their own admission,m believed that abortion is state-sanctioned murder of babies, and when push came to shove, they folded like a cheap card table.
Do you really believe that any “Pro-Gun Democrat” would stand up to the pressure any better?
Although I personally support marriage equality I respect the fact others have different views.
But I do have a problem with people who hate gay people just because they are gay, and that seems to be the problem with many (not all) on the right side of the fence
It’s been my experience that you don’t run into a lot of actual “haters” in the way the left sees it I think you see more like this
1. You have people who Consider Homosexuality a sin (as opposed to the act a/la Catholics) Our friends on the left confuse the , “hate the sin, love the sinner” with Hate the sinner. A Christian is simply not allowed to endorse sin.
2. You have people who are repulsed by the attempt to force them to accept something they see as Sin or bad as an positive. It’s one thing to say: I’m gay and it’s nobody’s business buy my own. it’s another to say: “If you don’t teach your kids that what I do is right and proclaim in publicly you are a bigot who should be rejected”
I remember there were a few lesbians who used to come into my father’s bar when I was a kid. Being 6 years old I asked one “why do you always wear boys clothes (this was 1968) she told me it’s because they were more comfortable for her and I never thought anything of it.
As I’ve said in the past the gay community will find out who the actual “haters” are if a gene is ever discovered that causes one to be born gay. That’s when the Homosexual community will suddenly become pro-life and we will find out which of our pro-life friends really mean it.
Jeff – do you also have a problem with people like Roseanne Barr that publicly wish death by cancer on those who eat at Chick-fil-a? That seems pretty hateful also.

“How the health insurance industry is supposed to survive…”
It’s not. That’s the plan. Destroy it.
I have been thinking about this history of gay marriage. We were constantly told that it was about getting government out of the bedroom and it had nothing to do with gay marriage. But all the little things soon turned into the one big thing. Now we have the same issue with guns – we just want to take away the bazookas, not the hunting guns and pistols. They do lie. When we say bazooka’s are the camel’s nose under the tent, they will say we are being stupid. Soon we will be unarmed and subject to the thought police when we want to start a business or write a blog. Neither gay marriage or guns are my thing, but they constant erosion of my traditions and freedoms is now alarming.

I would add “Universal Healthcare” to the this list.
How the health insurance industry is supposed to survive in the face of the provisions of the Affordable Care Act is beyond me.
It dawned on me the other day that we are (probably) going to have grandparent health insurance policies paying the bills for prenatal, postnatal, and sometimes, neonatal care of their grandchildren.
Incrementalism at work.

Have you ever read Lawdog’s post on ‘compromise’? One part:
You say, “Let’s compromise. Give me half.” I respond by asking what I get out of this compromise, and you reply that I get to keep half of my cake.
Okay, we compromise. Let us call this compromise The National Firearms Act of 1934.
There I am with my half of the cake, and you walk back up and say, “Give me that cake.”
I say, “No, it’s my cake.”
You say, “Let’s compromise.” What do I get out of this compromise? Why, I get to keep half of what’s left of the cake I already own.
…
I’m left holding crumbs of what was once a large and satisfying cake, and you’re standing there with most of MY CAKE, making anime eyes and whining about being “reasonable”, and wondering “why we won’t compromise”.
http://thelawdogfiles.blogspot.com/2010/09/ok-ill-play.html
Freakin’ PERFECT argument, man! Bravissimo!!!
One irony is I almost agree with the left on making gay marriage legal someday, but I agree their hipocracy and lying is a huge turnoff. As for guns you are 100% right, I have never seen a leftist compromise on anything there, and they can never be trusted. We are winning now on gun control, so why bother with a compromise the left does not really mean anyway.
One disturbing thing, have you seen Bill O’Reillys recent rants on gun control. And this guy is supposed to be a conservative looking out for us. With friends like that we dont need the left anymore.
He’s operating under instruction from Rupert Murdoch.
Question: How do you know if a progressive is lying?
Answer: Easy. If they use the word “reasonable” in any part of a sentence, they’re definitely lying.
“unreasonable fanatics who would oppose restrictions on the ownership of Sherman Tanks’
Amusingly, it’s legal to own a tank, as long as the weapons are de-activated (or you have a BATF license for the MGs)
If any Syrians are left alive, someone might want to ask them if they still think it’s a good idea to have the general populace armed only with UN resolutions.
Every socialist and Marxist knows it’s not about gay rights. The example of Leftists fully and gladly supporting gay-murdering muslims should put that to rest in all intelligent people. The socialist and Marxists know that destruction of the nuclear family is the foundation on which a strong centrally-controlled, over-arching socialist government will be built. Gay marriage is not the end all for destruction of the nuclear family, but it sure is a good start.
True. But also these other groups of people are stand ins for the ‘working class’… who never really bought into the socialism thing.
I’ve never thought that homosexual acts should be illegal, but there’s this much to be said for the old law: when something’s illegal, you can’t be punished for refusing to abet or “celebrate” it . . .
“who would oppose restrictions on the ownership of Sherman Tanks.”
Like, what’s wrong with owning a sherman tank? I bet if you look in the FBI/BATF databases there is not a single case of someone shooting their toe off with the thing. Fact it is probably the safest fire arm you can own. /snark
They always speak of “Compromise”.
Well, mister liberal, what are you willing to give up on guns? I have heard of this compromise for decades now and yet you never offer me anythign I don’t already possess.
End the Hughes Amendment on Section 922 in exchange for gun show background checks? That would be true compromise. We both get something we want. Show us some good faith if you want to be taken seriously.
And ‘common sense’ reasonable gun control? We will discuss that when you show me an unreasonable gun control law you support repealing.
Talk is cheap libs, put your money where your mouth is!
For some people, “compromise” means, “I’d like to hit you upside the head 20 times with this 2X4, but I’m willing to compromise for only 10.”
Great example of the slippery slope. We also saw the vicious harassment of traditional marriage supporters of CA Prop 8, including online lists & maps locating Prop 8 supporters. And, gee, haven’t some local publications and bureaucrats pulled a similar stunt of publishing lists of gun permit/concealed carry permit holders? The impulse to “out” as well as deny the livelihood of dissenters is irresistible to the Left.
Oh yeah, and it’s just health care reform. Not a socialist takeover of the healthcare system…. eye roll….
I remember Harry Reid on tv just the other day “who is talking about reconciliation? Who? Who?” regarding the ‘health care law’… passed using reconciliation rules…

But Mayor Tom Menino will give $1.8 million in tax payer owned land to a Muslim group that calls out for executing homosexuals…
If you made this up no one would believe you.
That’s probably the best discussion and example of the slippery slope that I’ve ever read. You’re a hell of a writer, and you’re spot on here. Oh, and I’m pro-gay-marriage, too.
Thank you kindly.
The problem with this kind of dishonesty that I’m talking about it you can only do it once or twice in an internet age, then it is impossible to hide
[…] At the time he was elected, when he was opposed to the Individual Mandate promoted by rival Hillary Clinton, Obama also believed that marriage was a contract (we will not speak of sacraments with Obama) between a man and a woman. Shortly after he was elected, his position began to evolve and continued to evolve until comments by members of his administration caused him to declare that his evolution in this respect was complete, and that he was a supporter of 'gay marriage.' Over the past week, we have seen mayors across the country, such as former Obama adviser Rahm Emmanuel, declare that the Chick-fil-A franchise is not welcome on their turf, because the owners believe what Obama claimed to have believed at the time of his election. Emmanuel has been joined by the mayors of Boston, New York and San Francisco in deciding that their cities remain Chick-fil-A-free zones, with the Mayor of San Francisco stating on Twitter last night that the nearest Chick-fil-A to San Francisco is 40 miles away (in God only knows what benighted burg), and that the business had better not plan on moving any closer to Greater San Franciscodom, of which he is the Emperor. Chick-fil-A joins the TEA Party as one of the greatest imminent threats to our domestic tranquility. […]
FTFY.
And it points up the central problem: we know that the Left’s ultimate goal is tyranny. Slavery. And we also know that they cannot be trusted to keep any agreement that would keep them from that goal. This is not a problem that will be solved by elections. No tyranny in history ever has.
The Democrat party has never forgiven Republicans for taking their slaves away.
